H1 versus a shoe

I don't know if I watched too many infomercials or what, but now I need new shoes! I decided to see what my very much work hardened Modded Tasman Salt H1 could do...

Nice saving sharp knife - nice worn out shoe...



... 2 halves of shoe - nice still sharp (but doesn't shave) H1...





If you think this is no big deal, try it - be careful the blade doesn't slip and slice you up, though. A few passes on my sharpening steel and a few passes on the leather strop and it shaves again.

If anyone has any other tests they'd like to see on H1 or FRN, please let me know and maybe I'll do it. This Winter I'm gonna put to rest my FRN/cold weather concerns in some manner and post the results in this thread. I'm also gonna baton like crazy in the extreme cold. Anyway, thanks for lookin'.

I have the worst test ever.

Ding the yellow FRN, then sand out the ding, and then watch as it gets dirty before the rest of the knife no matter what you do. I had to see my therapist about that one. GAHHHH!!

That is funny. I couple months ago a leather boot was left on my parking lot and I had just finished touching up my Pacific Salt the night before.

I bisected the shoe twice (perhaps that is "trisected"?) First I took the toe box off, then I cut again across the laces and made three pieces of the shoe (front, middle and rear third). I feared sharing it thinking someone would call me the "shoe ninja" or something...I guess it is clear now that you broke the ice LOL.

H1 is no joke. It does not hold an edge like some steels, but it is easy to put a keen edge on and will put up with a lot of work bordering on abuse. I have attempted to put it into words and failed, but I think H1 is quick to loose that "shaving" edge, but keeps a "working" edge for a long time.

Now, everyone can come out of the shoe-cuttin' closet, I guess. I don't care what anyone thinks - it's a great knife test. That's what old shoes are for and they should teach us that in school.

Tried that once with an overly thinned blade of 52100. The shoe died, but took the edge with it.

Wow. I knew that H1 was versatile, but that is surprising. I'm REALLY tempted to cut some old sneakers in half now. That is beautiful. Something different.

Nothing turned me off of any product faster then that opening line. But you are right it is the type of thing they do in those commercials

Today was a good day to baton the crap out of this knife - "for science".



My hands took most of the shock, let me tell you. There's some wood, dirt, or whatever on the blade, but it still slices paper great after beating it straight into the wood time after time.



I steeled and stropped on the leather and it's back to shaving. H1 is awesome! There is, however a small problem with the action. Where you see the blade opened to in the last pic - if you thumb it slowly, it pauses at this point - kind of like something chipped away minutely on either the lockbar or the blades lock area - and then closes and locks up very securely. If I could take it apart, I'd know for sure. I won't take it apart until I render it useless. I want to know what FRN will do it extreme cold - that's my next test.



If I destroy it, I was thinking of making some pendants with the H1 blade steel - plus I'd have a spare clip.

No, but I walk to and from work (22 min. there and 22 min. back) every day, and those are a year old. I have no estimate. I have a long stride - I'm 6 ft. tall. I'd like to know the mileage, too.

hmmm i'm guessing between 2 and 4 miles a day for a year. work hardened, yup

imagine if spyderco made running shoes...my asicsx4pairs, mizunos nikes and vibrams would have a run for it

I like it. I never would have thought to Wharny a hawkbill, but I like how the tip seems thicker than the middle of the cutting edge. I think it's interesting to see how things work or are put together. That same mindset also give good reason to cut stuff in half. I remember cutting a boot apart to get the steel toe out and see what that was about.
