Actually the character was more Guy Savelli inspired than anything remotely Echanis. Guy Savelli was brought in by Nick Rowe to instruct in certain subjects at SERE. Echanis had passed away well before SERE became a school under the Army's umbrella at Bragg. In the book you refer to the Echanis myth of staring a goat to death was discounted later on in the text and assigned appropriately to Savelli. The movie, unlike the book, was a freakshow. Here is one of several links of Savelli training students at Bragg - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCwNeg2-Ob8

I am pleased that Black Belt Magazine has accepted an article I've written after several months of research on Mike Echanis and his journey as a Wounded Warrior. The article is the only one authorized by the Echanis Family which assisted greatly in its preparation. The intent is to motivate and encourage our trans generational Wounded Warriors to never ever quit when it comes to their recovery/rehabilitation and recreation of their lives after war. Mike's actual military career, accomplishments, training and awards/decorations are presented for the first time in 35 years based on a FOIA request; his involvement with both Special Forces and the Navy SEALs/UDT communities as the identified H2H senior instructor for the communities at the time is presented and documented; and there's much more to include publication of never before seen photos. My sincere thanks to Black Belt and its editor, Robert Young, for continuing to honor MDE's life, contributions to the martial arts and now his successful quest to re-enable himself after the severe wounds he suffered in Vietnam via the publication Mike was so proud to be associated with.

GERBER MK II / WARRIOR - For the record - Mike Echanis only offered the Hwa Rang Do "Warrior" knife could be improved design wise by adding a serration feature.

This was during the early infancy of the design phase.

Mike himself preferred and had advanced the application and training of/with the Gerber MK II and had entered into discussions with Gerber to produce a MK II evolution using his experience and input.

Only one of these knives was made/serial numbered. It remains with the Echanis Family.

Only one formal reference was made to the "Echanis Warrior" and that was is a post death article in Soldier of Fortune by Randy Wanner. Both Wanner and Bob Taylor sought the family's approval to create a commemorative knife bearing the Echanis name, circa 1980 and 1981. The family would and did not authorize any such knife.
