Hi all, Sorry I'm back to what really catches my interest, which are the Q and R knives. I came across some rough cut blades that had been made for the Q and R knives and thought I'd share some pictures and info. I went to Spyderco Mecca and was fortunate to get to spend some time with Sal. Sal is a walking encyclopia of all his knives. He talked of issues with past employees, inventory control, and hard times for he and Spyderco. I've had these blade roughs for a while so while out at the Shot Show when talking to Sal found that the Ferrari horse cut is very rare. Others pictured I have never read about. (Hilti, Eddie Bauer, Discovery Channel all Q's, and the spider cut blade for the R knife. None were made into a knife.) I received these blades from someone outside the company which is at least a small consolation, not an employee. Having roughs made me feel like I had stolen property, so once there I offered the blades to Sal. He took his time, looked over each one, talked at length about Q history (Interesting fact: Spyderco had hoped to sell Q's to collectors though most contracts from companies forbade outside sales so many Q's made only went to these specific customers.) Sal did not take the blades, he thought I should polish them and display them with one Q handle. I asked about sharpening and he gave me the name of a man in the area that may possibly do the hardening and sharpening. I haven't decided yet what to do other than take pictures and let anyone with similar interests see what I've got.
As always, I am impressed with Sal! He gave me his time, knowledge, and permission to keep these blades. I am very fortunate to live in Spyderco country.
