Pic request: Butt end of UKPK and Urban

Can anyone post some side by side pics of butt end views of the UKPK and Urban? I am looking to compare how deep the tip of the blade is buried/sits in relation to the scales on these knives. After closely examining a number of pictures of them both... the UKPK's blade tip seem to sit very, very high in relation to the scales, almost the the point of being exposed, due to the scales coming to more of a point towards the butt of the knife. It seems on the Urban, the butt has a wider, more blunt shape, providing more coverage for the tip of the blade.

Is that accurate?

sorry i am still not that well versed in the anatomy of knives, like what certain areas are called. i dont get what your asking? i have all 7 knives and would be happy to post any pic you want but do you mean you just want a pic of the bottom end of the knives? or how the blade sits in terms of when people are asking if its centered? what are you asking me?!?!?! lol

Yes, that's what he means. He wants a comparison of how deep the tips rest within the scales when closed.

I dont know about the Urban, but I think I know what youre talking about on the UKPK. There was another thread about this started by David Lowry. The UKPK blade tip does seem to not go down below the level of the scales that much. David actually took his apart and ground down the contact point of the blade tang and knife spine to get his to sit lower (sorry, you'll need to do your own search). I need to do that to mine since I can just barely get a fingernail on it - close to being exposed too much - of course, I tweaked the tip on mine a bit so its worse than it was when I got it.

Pneumothorax.... thanks for the suggestion, I found that thread. man it's even worse than i thought on the UKPK. I'm interested to see if it's any better on the Urban!

That UKPK is actually mine now(bought from him)


I have to say he did some awesome mods with the sanding of G10 by the thumb hole and making the blade be more "recessed" into the handle.

It is easy to grind down the blade kick a little to drop the point farther into the handle. It is a lot harder to add steel to the blade to raise it away from the backspring.

sorry took so long shifty. and to be honest i am still not 100% sure what your asking me. also to compound the problem this camera i am using is not my good one. its a back up that i was lucky enough to for free from my buddy and i will get a new good one soon. i am assuming from your pic you want the orange ukpk (non rescue blade) and the orange urban. i have both urbans and all ukpk's so if you want the fg's or other let me know. the way i am understanding this is that you wanted to know how much the blade sticks out when its closed? the answer is the urban has a bigger "bump" or "lip" of blade sticking out. the ukpk has less blade sticking out when its closed..... sorry. i have a huge collection that i am very proud of, but honestly most times i cant point to a a certain area of a knife and say what its called or like, for example i get blade names mixed up...flat/hollow/pivot/swedge/tang this/and liner that/ full grind vs half switchback with a half gainer blade grind.... i dont know. i am learning still so bear with me. i usually just take pics of knives and let others describe them. you know like a compare shot of JUST the knife next to another

Many denounce it for its strange appearance and perceived lack of versatility, but I maintain that it is still the only proper grind for opening boxes that contain knives, at least from the inside. And no one will convince me otherwise.

Thanks very much for the pics Smoothone. They do give me a better idea of how low the blade tip sits. But would you be willing to take a pic like the one I posted up top? See how in that pic you can see the tip/point of the blade, and you can see how close to the top of the scale/handle it is? If you could pretty much duplicate that pic, but using the Urban (leaf blade) that's what I am looking for.

Why? I carried mine like that (in fact, from sharpening and wear mine was actually exposed just a little) for three years without incident. If it wasn't for this thread getting me to check, I probably wouldn't have noticed, much less bothered to spend five minutes correcting the "problem".

I don't know... stuff like that really bugs me. I know I will be constantly worrying about getting jabbed by the tip when I am carrying no matter how remote the possibility.

Just kind of seems like a slight design flaw IMO.

I know what you mean Shifty - one of my pet peeves is when the blade tip is not covered well in the closed position.

Fortunately, like yablanowitz said, you can usually remove some of the kick to sink the blade farther into the handle. I also recently used a dremel w/ the cut-off wheel attachment to shorten the blade at the tip on a couple Swiss Army Knives and slipjoints - it worked nicely. I have not tried it on a Spyderco yet, but I think it would work.

However, I really prefer handle shapes that have the tip totally covered by the handle, like the Dragonfly for example.

LeftHandPath... unfortunately I do not trust my skills enough to alter such an expensive knife. The thought of taking a dremel to it makes me feel faint lol Funny you should mention the dragonfly as it is tied for the top position on my 'To Buy' list right now. It's the G-10 version I'm after.

The other knife at the top is the Urban, but that all depends on what SmoothOnes photos reveal about how high the tip rides... hopefully a lot lower than the UKPK.

i am verry sorry i couldnt help you. i dont have my good camera anymore so i am stuck using hers when she allows me to use it when she stops by. i dont know much about cameras or photography so i really cant help the issues i am having and fix it. and like i said when it get close up the flash goes off and it gets really blurry and bright and the pics suck. sorry buddy maybe some one else who has both can take a beter picture. i am sure you waited patiently and now are deeply disapointed and for that i aploligize to you and hope everything works out. i will post the crappy photos anyway to prove i tried atleast to help you with your problem. take care. mark
