    Friends and knives

Why does every friend I know have to test the edge on a new knife when I show them a knife? Two people have cut themselves and a few came very close. The first thing I say is, "Be careful," but no one seems to listen.

i'm the friend who usually test the edge haha, but rarely do i cut myself. mainly because i believe i have a good feel for whether or not my skin has reached the edge and is about to get cut, OR the knives they have (mostly kitchen) are dull as all hell.

I usually hand them a Band-Aid first. Most of the people I know have no idea that a knife can be as sharp as I keep mine, but they think they know what a sharp knife is. The first person I remember cutting himself with one of my knives was my Dad. I think I was in junior high at the time.

Great thread, I do always hand my knife to a friend with a warning to be careful but they most always to the same thing and a few have cut themselves and say, wow, that is sharp.lol Actually had one tell me my knife was too sharp.. is that even possible?

Telling them to be careful or saying "It's sharp" pretty much guarantees they will cut themselves. It's like a sign that says "Wet Paint"; they have to touch it to see if the sign is right, even though they wouldn't have touched it if the sign wasn't there.

LOL, I don't think some of my friends are quick learners. I still cringe when this particular friend "tests" the edge with his thumb. Most grab a sheet of paper now.

Several years ago I was at a party where a friend saw my Buck 110 Folding Hunter strapped to my belt. He asked to see it. As I handed my Buck to him, I said, "Careful, it's sharp." He smiled as he immediately opened the knife and proceeded to run his thumb lightly across the entire length of the edge.

Luckily he hadn't applied much pressure with his thumb as there was no blood, but that look of awe in his eyes was pricelss. He said, "That's sharp!"
