    Throwing knives

    Hey guys.
I was wondering if there are any knife throwers here, that could recommend a good knife that can be used for utility, as well as throwing.
I know that "something's gotta give', but I still think that there are knives suitable for both.
I've got 3 of ZT's 150. This model is a very nice throwing knife, and the S30V is obviously very suitable for the utilitarian use. I throw one of these on regular bases, as practice. I broke some tips, but it's so darn easy to fix, I can't stop throwing
So, any other knives out there that are worth looking into?

I have been knife throwing for five years now and the throwing knife i use is one that was designed by john bailey called the "Zeil" and is a very good throwing knife, and he to is a master knife thrower.Throwing knives are not meant for anything but throwing.I dont think your going to find a true throwing knife that your going to be able to do any cutting tasks with.

I only throw knives that are made specifically for that purpose. And that is the only thing I do with them.

throwing knives are made softer to allow flex as they absorb the force of the impact... they won't be good for anything but throwing even if you get a workable edge on em.

I personally prefer spikes. Just go to home depot and pick up a dozen 9-10" nails and hit a grinder for a while, taking the head off and ending up with a pointy tip on both ends. Spikes are harder to figure out but easier to get sticking once you figure it out (and a lot easier to conceal a lot of em).

CS has a thrower made of 1095 Carbon Steel that has a good utility edge...I forget the name but the handle is wrapped in Paracord, and I have a few....they are good throwers and seem to be holding up well...Doc
    Ah...just remembered it's a Cold Steel "Tru-Flight Thrower"

I understand that I'm probably better off with an actual throwing knife, though I'm a realist, and most likely if i ever need to throw it at somebody, or something, I won't necessarily have a throwing knife on me.
I do have small fixed blades that I EDC, which I like to practice throwing with.
By the way, I've been throwing knives for over 7 years now, and I know that almost any knife can be used as throwing knife, given It's a little heavy, and the thrower knows what he's doing.

My favourite thrower, ZT 150 (I was mistaken initially, saying it's the 100 model). Here's a link.

Yeah you can throw any knife, but not all knives that are thrown were disigned for that, and wont hold up very long.Lord knows i have torn up a few. Then i decided to buy some genuine throwing knives.

started throwing about 10 years ago, usually just over the ~20 feet across my living room in the basement. I just move my backstop and targets outside and use the side of the shed in the summer from 30 feet.

went through a few sets of throwing knives before figuring out that for the price nails work just as well.

From all the Spydies I have, there are two that I use the throw regularily (at least once a day).
Both are Delica III, one in PE (ATS-55), the other one in SE (VG-10). To my surprise, the VG-10 blade, although regrund to full flat performs outstandingly. I wouldn't have the guts to throw my Millie, which is also full flat grind and has a thicker blade, but I have no reluctance with my Dialica.
The ATS-55 blade wasn't that lucky, I snapped a few mm from the tip some time ago, but I reshaped it at a more suitable profile for throwing and now it's working great.
I found the Delica makes a good thrower for short distances (10 - 15 feet). The Native works fine too, my prefferences leaning towards the Native III.

I actually threw my Mille a couple of times. It's a crazy sight to watch. It sticks as deep as any good throwing knife, or sometimes better, deeper.
My dagger also chipped a few times, but it's easy to resharpen.

Cool looking knife. I bet it's very good for throwing, since it's made specifically for that. I have a couple of knives that look like that, though they're too big for EDC.

Another recommendation for this knife if you want a thrower. They make a sheath for it that I believe holds one or two knives. It makes a decent beater utility knife and doesn't look too 'weapony' either. My favorite thing about them is that they are cheap.

Thanks for the recommendation Ed! Bob does make great throwing knives.
Also, Raven, I've got 2 Tru-Flight Throwers by CS. Again a great throwing knife, yet way too big for me to EDC, Unlike something like the ZT 150, which is the size of the Spyderco Streetbeat.

Thumbs up Branton Knives: Best throwing knives available

ABout 3 years ago at one of the BLADE Shows in Atlanta Georgia I got to meet one of the exhibitioners at the show. His name is Bobby Branton and he was demonstrating his throwing knives that he makes. And let me tell you that guy is probably the best knife thrower I've seen up till this point.

He is a knifemaker and makes many varieties of knives but he is sort of the kingpin of throwing knives and is well known in that sector. His website is www.brantonknives.com. He is a yearly exhibitor at the Atlanta BLADE show and usually sells his wares at the shows as well.

I've had some of Cold Steel's throwing knives and I must say that they are not bad for production blades. But if you want to get serious about the sport of knife throwing I think that Bobby Branton is the guy you want to talk to. A very nice guy and very knowledgable about knives in general.

I've also heard of a guy named Bob Karp who also makes throwing knives but I know very little about him. Might be worth checking out as well.

I remember Bobby trained Salma Hayek in knifethrowing when she was making a movie (unfortunately I can't remember the title). For those who are into Salma Hayek and knives...

I am an archer in California, and I sometimes like to throw my knives at the target, but they don't stick in to the target most of the time. I don't think I can buy any throwing knives in CA, can someone tell me which states I could get some throwing knives?
