    Some new knives

    Just got these in today...

Cold Steel "Battle Ring" very interesting little knife (9" total) 31/2" double bladed, looks like a real broad archery arrow only wider...Ring at the butt end and handle made from stuff CS uses on the nightshade line... All and All I kinda like it...can't figure out just yet what I like about it...but I like it nonetheless....

CRKT: "The Sting" I like the original AG Russell of the late 70's series better...these new ones are a bit heavier, the sheath needs to be scrapped and a new one made, highlight is the thing is black coated.

and BTW: I managed to snag another Ronin...bringing the total to date up to 85....I think I will leave the collection there at that number (If I can resist buying em LOL) I figure 85 of anything is enough. With that said I will still accept donations of Ronins...just in case you need to get rid of one or two.....Doc

Doc, Isn't that around 7% of the production total or something? It's an amazing thing whatever it is though.

It is appropriate being it's excellent design, and the fact that you are one of the few that can make it live up to it's full potential.

That one was always my unicorn for whatever reason. I have a hundred spyders, but I could never get one of those. Now, whenever I see them on the bay I don't have the money. When I have a little extra ( typically from selling a knife?), I never see them

I've had a lot rarer spydercos, including a blue lum ( had to let it go), Ti ATR, set of Lil Temp's , etc., but never a Ronin.

I sure won't give up. Even if it takes me 10 years.

Regards, Doc, glad you've had a little more time to post lately. Joe

I remember the days when my now seemingly small Ronin cache matched the good Doc's.

I'm not sure what to say other than I'm adding another layer of razor wire around the compound!

damn thats a lot of ronins doc
owning one, i can see why you would have 2 and a spare, but 85, you could lose/wear one out every year, and probably still have some left when you die of old age.

you have more ronins, than i have spydercos
i need to buy more knives

Amazing. truely. I love the design but a fixed knife to carry for me isn't practical.

But the yojimbo..... my holy grail, unicorn, pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, 20 dollar bill you find in the bottom of the dryer after doing laundry you thought you lost and you swore you checked every pocket and it is there.... ya get the picture.

Oh, Doc, you haven't done what people do with lots of cash and like, laid them all over the bed and rolled around in them, have you?

Hey Doc, I had to look up what that battle ring looks like, and I surmised that I watch too much anime! (Even though not that much...)

To me it looks like the kunai that Naruto likes to throw

Snuff: Look at my avatar...there's one!
Zen: How many you got bro?...best to keep that Razor wire up around the collection...just in case I have not had enough....LOL
Shenmue: No rolling with Ronins....could be fatal!
Joe: I'm keeping the collection at 85, don't ask me why...but when I come across number 86 my friend....it's yours....I mean that!
Cobrajoe: The kunai was originally a Japanese Garden tool...more like a crowbar than a knife, When people think Kunai they think of it as a throwing weapon, but when sharpened and use by Shaolin Monks as defensive tools they were basically used as stabbing and thrusting weapons. The CS version is just that a truly thrusting knife, though it might look like a kunai, I think the Battle Ring is really something else, though I could probably throw it with no problems, I kinda like it the way it was designed, and like the way it handles...the sheath is a little screwy and I might have to have a new one made...but the knife is pretty cool, and I plan on doing some meat testing with it this weekend and I'll let you know how it does.....Doc

Thanks Doc, I'll start saving up.

When you do the meat test are you going to do any comparisons or just test the Cold steel? That is an interesting design. Double edge, grip designed to keep your hand from sliding onto the blade, good steel, and probably sharp. CS does that pretty well. Joe

Thanks for the info Doc, the CS version surely does look like more than just a stabber, it looks more like a great white's tooth on a kunai handle

I'm sure you'll enjoy it, and I'm curious how the meat test will turn out.

I like those 3 knives, pretty unique looking, not much of a fixed blade person, but I definitely like for them to be unique if I were to get one.

I did some meat testing tonight and here are the results:
First let me say I did not do my standard test because I was not able to find a Round Roast big enough to meet my specs in the supermarket. The two Roasts I used measured only 5" round and 5" high, so I modified my testing somewhat. The test was done to look at the effectiveness of the Cold Steel "Battle Ring". The Battle Ring is a scary looking 3" Double Bladed Broad Spearpoint design that goes from a tapered sharp point to a width of a little over 2 1/4" at its widest point, at the back of the blades. For the sake of comparison I also used two other fixed blade knives that I know in the past have proven to be superior awesome performers in these meat tests. I used my trusty Spyderco "Ronin" a 2 3/4" wharncliffe design blade and the SOG "Field Pup" a 4" Recurve blade design. Since the roast was so small I limited my test to fast hard diagonal slashes and some thrusting with all three knives. Both the Ronin and Field Pup made slashes with little felt resistance going through the meat and cut to a consistent depth of 3". The Battle Ring could not compete in this department making it only to a depth between 1 1/2" to 2 1/2" with most slashes at the 2" depth mark. In the thrusting tests all three knives made it to the depth of their respective blade lengths. No surprises here with these deep penetrating designs. Where the Battle Ring really shined was in the thrusting tests. All three knives were very effective when thrusting into the meat and pulling downwards, all cut through the meat like light sabers. But the ultimate winner in the Comma Cut Tests was the Battle Ring. The Battle Ring left an awesome hole in the meat once twisted. I could easily insert my Index, Middle and Ring fingers into the hole that was made. Whereas when both the Ronin and Field Pup knives were thrust into the meat and twisted I was only able to place my Index finger and no more into the hole that was left behind. The hole that the Battle Ring made in the meat has only been duplicated by much larger knives like the Rock Salt for example so I was quite impressed with it's ability in the Comma cutting department. Though the Battle Ring knife makes for a decent slashing knife for defensive purposes, If your style of knife fighting is based on a Reverse (Ice pick)grip blade edge in or out, look no further for a very effective tool. FWIW: The P'Kal style knives can only dream about performance like this.....Doc

As usual thanks for contributing to the knowledge base. It sounds like the CS Battle ring is definitely worth it's asking price. It looks to be difficult to impossible to disarm from someone that is skilled, such as yourself.

I'd do my best to avoid that situation. Thanks again Doc! Joe
