Anyone got a knife? Can I borrow it?

I once made the mistake lending a blade out. The user didn't have a clue what a knife was for and more importantly, what it wasn't for. No major damage done, but I told myself I would never lend a knife to someone, even (especially?) in my presence. This has crossed over to all my tools.

Yes, I do have a knife - as you can see. No, you can't borrow it.

Haha! Yeah, I normally have no problem lending out a knife and it's usually for something simple like cutting a tag off, or opening a package, etc. But, one time, a co-worker asked to borrow a knife so I happily handed over my D2 Millie (as I have many times before) and he comes back like, "Damn bro, that is one heckuva knife!" and he's holding a soda can that he had sliced in half with it. Now, this is nothing I haven't done with other Spydies in the past, but I just didn't expect it AT ALL. So he hands me the knife back and must've seen the look of horror on my face and said something like, "Was I not supposed to use it for that?" So, I say, as I'm checking for chips in the steel (thankfully there were none) "Well, it's not really meant for that but it did the job, huh?" Hey, no blood, no foul.

Moral of the story, always ask what they need to cut BEFORE handing them one of your fave blades!

i dont let people borrow my knife or most anything. if they need to cut something and insist on having my knife/cutting implement. i will walk to them and cut it for them. because if they are using it and dont think they'll propbably end up cutting through the item they want to cut right into a cinderblock, or steel storage rack, bye bye edge and i'll just want to verbally abuse them, even though i know it wasnt done on purpose but i want to yell so badly.

I learned my lesson by letting someone use my Dodo. I have a hard time telling people "no" so I handed it to him. He then proceeds to use it to cut several zip ties off the spokes of a bicycle wheel. When he handed it back to me, the super pointy tip of the Dodo was no longer prominent. I am now much more careful and selective when lending my knives, especially when it is a discontinued one that is very hard to replace.

the reason i listed above as well as i feel like an arse when i ask for it back, because if i lend something out...i want it back IMMEDIATELY. as soon as you are done using it.

Everyone that I work with knows that I have 2-3 knives on me at any given moment, so they just show me what needs cutting and let me get to work.

If someone does happen to ask for a knife, I reply with "Show me what you need done, and I'll take care of it." Several times I ended up using something on my Leatherman tool instead. Close call!

I have a simple rule. If you don't want it lost or broken do not lend it! I gave in to this rule a few years ago when a friend asked to borrow my deepsea boat rod and reel. He returned it promptly and all was well. A month later I had a trip booked and when I went to assemble my rod and reel again, the threads on the rod had been stripped So...........never again, now no friend just an acquaintance. My wife said to me: Are you willing to loose a friend over a rod? I said no, but he did!
At work I carry a cheapo Stanley folding utility knife so if I have to be civil and let someone use it is no biggie.

I had a friend that I was showing my new UKPK to (one that I was lucky enough to get after it was discontinued...), and before I knew it, he had started to cut into a pop can!

Fortunately, I caught him right away and stopped him. My friendship wasn't ruined, and neither was my UKPK; but it made me be more careful in who I lend my knives to.

I've been thinking about getting a Byrd as a lender knife; I figure that it would be cheap enough that I wouldn't be super bummed if someone broke it, but still with good enough steel for people to realize what they're missing.

Hey ! you guys have some very inconsiderate "friends" (now ex-friends ? ). Cutting open a can !!! WTF !!!

I have at least a couple of knives on me at any given time. Most of the time if I see someone struggling with something that can be fixed with a knife I will offer to cut it for them. On a couple of occasions, even though they knew I had a knife, I did not offer my knife or my cutting for their task. I figure if they don't ask I will not offer. I've had a couple of knives razor edges go dull due to bad cutting technique by 'mates'.

If I lend it out I will lend my Ladybug or something that I can afford to lose.

And in the same vain as the buy a Byrd comment above. I have 2 Tenacious coming for exactly that reason

I always carry a beater for myself and for others, I beat up a good spyderco stretch by chipping ice on concrete that had the door to my work stuck shut, I got called out in the middle of the night for an emergency and had no choice but since that night I keep something inexpensive (not cheap) in my back pocket and my goldens and better sekis stay in great shape.

I've got a gerber EAB in my back pocket for a work beater... usually ends up cutting copper tape. Someone asks for a knife to borrow I have no problem tossing it at em, since the worst they can do is break a $10 knife. Have a 10 pack of spare blade in my vest if they kill the edge.

likely get a couple of byrds for gifts, delicas and ladybugs get pricy.
