I need a bit of help warranty department

Well Guys I basically got hosed on a deal. A civilian and Military were sold to me with a few faults that were not described.

    First question

The military is an old model and the blade is not centered. Does the warranty department take a look at this or am i out of luck.

    Next question

The G10 on my military 440 is white in certain places (scratches on G10), and the seller says that will buff out without a problem. I'm not very knowledgeable in this area, but could you please tell me is this possible or not.

    Last question

May I ask does Spyderco sharpen the civilian and does it cost the exact same. Is my warranty on this knife voided, because it was used to cut things with. (seems like a dumb question, but i just wanted to be sure)

I would very much appreciate any help you could provide.

    take care

Question #1 - Did you try adjusting the pivot screw at all? That can solve blade centering issues, but sometimes at the expense of action that is tighter or looser than you might like. In some cases, perhaps more so if the knife is used, it can be a matter of what balance between the two you'll accept.

Question #2 - I've never tried to work G10 with power tools, only sanded it a bit by hand to shape a piece as needed. Don't know if buffing a scratch is feasible with G10. I'd defer to someone like STR on this matter.

Question #3 - Spyderco makes no mention that one particular knife would cost more than another just for sharpening, so I'd say no. Warranty would not be voided only for it cutting something and I don't get the sense you're talking about any use that would be considered abusive or unreasonable for that model.

As far as the white looking scratches on the G10, I would wash the entire knife with dish soap and warm (hot) water and a toothbrush. Then I would blow it off with some compressed air and dry it off. After that you could put a bit of WD-40 or mineral oil on the G10 handles and rub it in a little bit and then dry it off with a towel. That makes most G10 look and feel like new in my experience.

As far as the blade being off center, unless it's rubbing the sides I wouldn't worry about it. I have had a few that have been off center and they still work marvelously.

If you're worried about it at all just send it in to Spyderco for a look over and a sharpening and it will come back like new. Trust me, they are really freaking good to their customers.

All is not lost. You have to awesome knives that with some Spydie care will be like new.

I'm pretty sure they will sharpen the Civilian as long for whatever the normal fee is (I thought it was $5.00 but I'm not sure). Of course it will probably be more if the thing has a busted tip or has been crazy abused or something.

    Cheers buddy!

Matte-finish Armor-All or another automotive plastic restorer should also work on G-10, though as I've never tried it myself you should test it (or any other cleaning/restoring product) on an out-of-the-way spot first. (Epoxy might react differently than Vinyl/PVC/ABS.)

The Matriarch and Civilian both come with a disclaimer card which states that the knife is not intended for general utility use. If there is a problem with the knife caused by such usage, then it could be denied warranty service. Basically any cutting besides hacking your way out of a life or death situation is outside of what the knife was originally intended for.

G10 is a hazardous material when it is sanded and gets airborne, so if you decide to work with it, use a respirator and do your work outside.

Spyderco is pretty much the only company that will resharpen their serrated knives. They are a class act.

Just send the knives in with a letter relating what happened to you and a check for 10 bucks (5 each for sharpening) and see what they can do with them. Sal's crew will take care of you. I can't wait until they send my Captain back!

In fact, I remember a fellow forum member in another thread mentioning that the $5 fee covers more than one knife sent in for resharpening.
