I finally picked up a Caly 3.5. I missed out on the Super Blue sprint and have wanted one ever since, so jumped on the chance to pick one up when the opportunity arose. Thanks Apophis for the heads up on this.

Nice. Why did you choose the 3.5 over the 3?

    I already have a Caly 3 in black G-10 with VG-10, but hadn't picked up a 3.5 model yet.

Thanks. Just trying to get a feeling on which one people get and why.

Well, since you seem to be opening the question up to "people," hehe, I thought I'd chime in.

They are both great with VG-10 steel, but I wound up getting them in Super Blue and ZDP-189, which are both fantastic steels. The Caly 3.5 CF ZDP-189 was the second spydie I bought. I got the 3.5 because I generally like bigger knives, and it has the same size blade as a Paramilitry2 or Manix2, plus or minus a hair. But it is much less conspicuous, with its extremely trim design and deep carry wire clip. So it's a great knife to carry inconspicuously when you want a big blade.

If you don't have any need for the bigger blade, the Caly 3 is great. I use one for peeling and slicing fruit, etc, partly because it's the super blue one and I like to watch it develop a patina. The 3.5" ZDP is good for this too and its steel slices like crazy. Also, its extra half inch of blade makes it easier to keep the tang area away from juicy fruits and vegetables.

I was skeptical of the 3.5's slick carbon fiber scales at first, but have really grown to like them. They're a bit thinner than the G-10 of my Caly 3 and strangely this seems to make the knife very comfortable in hand. But, if I were going to get a third Caly, I'd get the super blue 3.5 instead of a 3 inch ZDP, because, though I'm crazy about both ZDP and Super Blue, I just like the patina of the SB.

I'd say don't worry about the decision too much, because you'll probably wind up with both . And I don't think you'll go wrong with any Caly, including the discontinued Caly Jr.

This is an awsome knife! I truely like everything about it and have found nothing bad to say about it. This is my third spyderco Police model. The first two had the stainless handles and were serrated (spyder-edge). I like this one even better!
First of all, The only way to get my spyder-edge knives truely resharpened was to send it back to spyderco and do without it for 6 weeks or so. This knife is plain edged and I AM able to sharpen it! I am loving this! Spyderco's VG-10 steel rocks! It takes an edge well and holds the edge wonderfuly! I use the spyderco sharpmaker first and then use, (and this is what really makes a difference), a leather strop with stropping compound. WOW what a difference!
