Taz (& All): A "Welcome Mat" for Noobs?

So I have been lurking at some other forums that have what they call "The Welcome Mat" and it has all kinds of good introductory information in it, that noobs always want to know.

Remember, you were once a noob, too...even you, Deacon...and we want to make it easy for people to get interested in Spydie lore.

For us, it would be, for example, the acronyms thread, and the thread where people explain their names and avitars, and threads or websites that list all Spydercos in order of production or length, threads that explain using the sharpmaker, threads that explain the different steels used, and stuff like that.

I think the purpose is to give the new folks a quick start. I know I've found them invaluable, since it gets you up to speed quickly and you don't have to ask common questions as frequently.

I know Taz doesn't like stickys, so maybe a different forum...I dunno, there have got to be simple solutions.

    Whaddya think?

Any threads pop into your head as "must reading" on this forum?

I think we had a thread of them going at one point... no idea how long ago that was or what has happened to it since. But then again some days I have trouble remembering what I did last week.

    Thumbs up

    Good idea.
Those acronyms gave me a hard time when I first came here... helas, some of them give me a hard time even nowadays...
And a more detailed Edge-U-Cation would be great too (blade grinds and styles, sharpening tips aso.)

it sounds like a good idea but from what i have read about kristi is that she has her plate full of stuff to do. if this was to work we would have to have her sign off on the deal of a sticky/new forum, we [read more experienced members of the forum (more than me....and with better writng skills)] need to make it up, then have her sign off on it. thats a few if's and some detailed work to do but i think we could use it. i'd be more than happy to help but first lets hear from sal or kristi if it is something that they want to have done.

VW, you're right...IIRC, several years back there was a thread started that contained abbreviations, etc. I think it just kind of got lost in the forum shuffle over time. I'll search around a bit and see what I can come up with.

    great idea!

Bolstermanic, I think that's a really good idea, especially when you consider that this is an international forum and a lot of abbreviations are based on American English and slang, which may not always be easily understandable by those for whom English is not a first language.

I'd be happy to help with such an endeavour.
