    Knife Supplements, tips & tricks

How many people have actually put some thought into this? I've thought a lot about carrying two different knives that would complement each other. Or even other tools, not just knives, that would spare our 's from improper useage or abuse.

Personally, I'm considering a 79mm full serrated Rescue with a dremeled wave to supplement my new EDC black plain Para-Military. That or converting my 50/50 edge 98' Delica to fully serrated (how would I go about doing this?).

We've all been in that situation where we find ourselves having the wrong kind of knife for the job, especially if you pay over $100 for a very nice new one which you would rather not use to hack a limb off of a tree OR having a really big knife that is not best suited for fine delicate work. Different blade types and edges give us a variety to choose from.

I know I've heard of a prybaby, it is one of the best alternatives I've ever heard. I don't know if I'd go ahead and purchase one, but some of us may have more of a need for such a thing than I do. I know lots of us use flashlights to supplement a knife in night self-defense. I know I do, I carry a surefire in a holster.

What other things can you guys think of? I'm making this post so we can all share or little tips and tricks that we all come up with.

Actually, I love to pair up my knives. My favorite "dynamic duo" is a PE salsa and a SE dodo. Or a Lava and a SE Micarta Caly Jr for the dressier situations. Or a Scorpius and a SE delica. Or a Kiwi and a SE copilot. I just love pairing a PE blade with a SE, that usually gives me all the knife options that I want (that's why I love my large dyad so much ).

I guess I also end up carrying a smaller blade for cleaning fingernails and opening letters and such when I don't need more than an inch or two of sharp steel.

Or you could just buy a waved 79mm rescue. Easiest opening waved knive spyderco makes.

I recently (this week) stopped carrying my military and started carrying a SAK--victorinox huntsman or explorer or compact. I use the knife so rarely (at school) that there is no point in carrying two.

I may kind of go overboard on this. I always carry either a Dragonfly or a Waved Delica, and often both, plus my Victorinox Swiss Tool which has a both a plain blade and a serrated one, and does most everything that I can't or don't want to do with a knife except for prying. And I also just recently put a SAK Classic on my key chain, mainly for the scissors and tweezers, and also because it's so non-threatening and I can use it in places where popping out my Delica with the wave might raise eyebrows. A prybaby or similar small pry bar is somewhere on my "want" list, but not a huge priority for me.

I also always carry a DMT Diafold sharpener, a flashlight and a Bic Mini (I don't smoke).

Whoops, I just checked the lettering on mine, it is indeed 93mm! My bad!

Go to the Picture Gallery subforum and look at the Show Your EDC thread if you want to see what I carry around all the time. Make sure you are sitting down when you look

....and make sure you're not drinking anything or chewing on food.

On a side note...I think you would also be surprised at what Dr. Snubnose carries.

I often carry 2 knives, but I don't have a set combination. I usually carry one long, and one short. Such as Military/Dodo, Manix 80mm/Dodo, Ocelot/Dodo, etc.

I prefer tip up knives in the front right pocket. The other goes in the back right pocket. And I'm starting to like the tip down in the back right pocket, especially for the really long knives like the Military.

It varies a bit, but yes. That was just a typical day I happened to take a picture of a pocket dump.

I carry a lot of blades of different sizes, shapes, steels, edge profiles and NKP friendliness. I try to suit the blade to the job at hand. Ever tried scraping a spot of paint out of a sink with a wharncliffe? Not the best tool for the job. Whip out a Military to open a tube of caulking in a 90 year old lady's apartment? Not if I want to keep my job. Shave down a 2 x 4 to fit under a tub for support with a Ladybug? Get real, I don't have all day. Cut silicone caulking off ceramic tiles with a 15 degree included whittler? I hate replacing knives because I sharpened them to death in a week.

I never know from one minute to the next what my job will call for, so I try to cover as many bases as I can. Flashlight, multitool and an assortment of knives covers a lot of them.

My EDC consists of four knives/tools minimum.
    1. Chinook III. This is my beater knife, anything I don’t want my other knives to do, I do with this.
    2. ZDP-189 Caly 3. This is my fancy clean cutting precision folder.
    3. Catcherman. This is my food knife, I use it for cutting cheese most of the time. It really comes in handy when having steak.
    4. Leatherman Charge XTi. Every human on earth should have a good multi-tool on their person all the time. I happen to like this one.

Once I get my hands on the CPM D-2 Military I’ll add that to the lineup. Why? Because I can I guess. The Military will fill the position of a large folder with a thin cutting edge, as opposed to the Chinook which isn’t the best at fine cutting.

I also usually have a Fallkniven U-2 and SOG Crossgrip in my pocket.

No, those are Texas Toothpick pattern knives. The two in the top row are Case and the one in the second row is a Queen in D2.
