    Post D3 vs. D4 grinds

I just wondered......is it me or does the D3 have a grind that goes higher and gets really close to the hole?

Of the D4's that I have almost all of them are about 1/8" or 5/16" below the hole. Of all the D3's that I have (or have had) the grind goes within like a millimeter or 1/16" of the hole. Some of my D4's just seem that they go from edge to full blade width in like about 3/8".

I only recently started noticing this because my PE D4 bound up cutting some cardboard. So I grab a new D4 right out of the box to see if maybe my current user is in need of sharpening, and it binds up too. Even though the Para-Military has a thicker blade it just rips right through without binding. Same with my SS Dragonfly (this goes without saying).

I don't cut a lot of cardboard so this is why I am just now noticing this.

    Hi David,
Yes the grind on the D4 (and the E4 for that matter) seems "lower' down on the blade to me than the 3rd version of both. That said a saber flat grind is a flat grind, I do prefer a hollow grind over flat, though I think both the D4 and E4 are superior knife designs to their predecessors.

What I do notice is that my Delica 3/SE gets sharper than any of my D4's(even the ZDP one) and slices through cardboard and plastic bands waaay easier

I noticed quite some time ago that the E4 and D4 seem to have lower grinds that their predecessors. I suspect it was done to strengthen the blades for people who don't yet understand the difference between a knife and a crowbar. Having figured that out a while back, I prefer the older blades, although I like the new handles better.

Do you describe the distance from the spine to the hole? No... I don't completely get what you mean .... Seems I'm too stupid since everybody else gets it. Damn

*********EDIT: NOW I get it but leave this post in for the pic. Nice to compare the outlines of the different generations, anyhow ***************

I would think, that in the re-design of the blade, it might have changed the grind height. It might have had to be done to reinforce the tip.

Just get a flat ground Caly Jr. It will take care of the cardboard for ya.
