    1998 Jeep Cherokee?

My brother gave me his, it has 108,000 miles, and I'd like to put some money into it, but I don't want to put money into it and have it die at 108,001 miles. So about how long did your Cherokee last?

And what sort of driving lights do you guys recommend? I have a pair of IPF's up top on the roof rack, and a pair of Hella's on the front bumper, but I'd like to replace them with something a little newer.

Not quite the same model, but the Cherokee Chief I'm drive is an 87, and still going strong.

*I'm not going to tell you how many repairs it's had though *

1992 Cherokee Sport with just shy of 200,000 miles on it. It is still running strong, just a little worse for wear in the body. I finally retired it and got a Nissan Xterra. Most likely would have gotten another Cherokee if they were still making them.

    Talking 1995...

    My Dear Friend,

My 1995 Grand Cherokee Orvis Edition is still going strong at over 120,000 miles. In fact, they're quite hard to kill.

Near as I can tell, you have roughly 66% more lighting than the average car or truck as it is, I'd advise skipping peripheral electronics and maybe consider replacing things like starters, alternators and other electronics that fail at that age instead of new extra lights (unless those items were already replaced).

Zen, that'd be correct, it has a new alternator (it couldn't power the lights ), and a new starter, and he just replaced the AC unit, so all i need to fix right now are the leaks, and get some new tires.

About those leaks, the engine seems like it's leaking oil out of the screws on the bottom, the transmission is leaking at the clutch/flywheel area (where it's mounted to the engine), and I'm pretty sure the rear axle is leaking fluid. It also makes draining noises, and every few seconds you can hear a drip-drop, then a sizzle like whatever fluid that is hit something hot. There's also a rattling near the rear axle, but all of the above mentioned things only occur when it runs.

AKA, anybody know of some good jeep forums? Feel free to help though.

I have a 1993 Grand Cherokee with the V8, I just turned over 190,000 this past weekend.

They are almost bullet proof, I keep after the oil changes and basic maintenance and it seems like it will run forever.

If it is a 4.0, as I understand it, about the only way to kill it without really trying is to run it out of oil, other than that it is pretty stout and reliable. The transmission on the other hand..........I'd service/get it serviced first thing and see how the fluid looks, then go from there about how much $$$ to put into it.

JeepForum.com is pretty good, register and a several wealths of Jeep knowledge are at your fingertips.

Oh well in that case, install a kicking stereo so you don't hear those sounds.

providing they're not offroad miles, your jeep still has yeaaaaaaaars of life left in it.

my 95 jeep grand cherokee has over 160,000 miles on it, and is going strong. had a similar leak around my rear axel... getting it fixed wasn't too expensive. transmission is a little kooky at times, but has been like that for a while... not going to bother to replace it until it finally breaks down.

mid 90s jeep cherokees are like the homer simpson car... all sorts of things might break, but nothing that stops it from running...
