ebay resale price insanity!

i've seen some spydies go for absolutely insane prices on ebay as of late!

examples:

$338 big calypso, PE
$136 calypso jr, grey
green lum chinese folders well over the $200 mark
lil temps approaching $200
SE AUS-8 spot for like $70
$500+ ramco laguiole

it's pretty amazing how some of these knives have shot up so much in value. a couple years ago, i watched lum chinese folders and grey caly jrs hanging around in backstock for what seemed FOREVER, going nowhere!!!!

meanwhile, other great models such as the impala, smith, wegner -- are usually sold for a song! karambits, ATRs, yojimbos on closeout...

what spydies do you think will be fetching these sorts of prices in the future?

Hey Clovisc, those prices are finally getting to where they should be. The Big Caly, and even more so the Ramco are quite rare. Both just had recent threads about said rarity, so that fact is fresh with the unwashed masses known as speculators as well as collectors. Not surprising at all. Most of the others are reaching the MSRP plateau (the price where quality DC'd models usually hover around, once people appreciate their qualities). The Grey Caly Sprint is a bit high until you remember they were a sprint too. Maybe a bit high...but oh well.

Mr. Janich's knife system doesn't seem to be as tool specific as Bram's so hard to think it will go Gunting crazy...but who knows. It is a frickin awesome piece.

Seem pretty normal prices to me. Both have been DC'd for some time.

I guess that's true. It just seems to be high since the FRN MSRP was lower than the SS version.

I've noticed that prices of Spydercos spike around this time of year and around Christmas. I've always assumed it was because of tax return time. Anyway...it is definitely a sellers market at the moment.

It has reached the point where I am extremely reluctant to give opinions as to the "value" of any Spyderco knife. Prices for a given model on eBay range from absurdly low to absurdly high within a single month, occasionally in the course of a week. I think situations like the Glock Endura mentioned above are just cases of a well crafted sales pitch being read by totally unknowledgeable buyers since it appears the "first run" numbered ones are still available from Lone Wolf for $70. Some can be attributed to the current exchange rates, coupled with the reluctance of some US seller's to ship internationally, making overseas collectors willing to pay prices that may seem excessively high to those of us in the USA when a seller advertises they will ship worldwide.

That's another good point! Buy a from a local shop in Austria and as Amercian you will feel queasy

True in many cases, but again nothing in the "Spydieworld" is totally black and white. Picked up my PE Blachard Police a year or so back from an eBay seller in Vienna at what I considered an extremely reasonable price. Fully expected someone on "your" side of the Atlantic to outbid me on it. Same with the Hunt engraved 75mm Persian I now own. Demand, timing, and above all, luck, play roles in final selling prices.

But there is a big price difference between auctions and price in the shop. I'm sure that the shop hoped for a better price. They gambled and ... lost.

I remember the Blanchard PE you won, it was a steal. I do look at eBay now and again to get an idea of current trends but as you say there can be a massive difference in prices from one week to the next. I suppose that there must be more new collectors/users being converted to Spyderco products because unfamiliar names keep popping up as buyers of Spydies on eBay. Though Spyderco is a relatively young company I feel that it will soon be very difficult to buy any of the older models. Where buying on eBay is concerned it is a case of being in the right place at the right time with the appropriate funds available.

I am in the very fortunate position where my "pre-blade-bug" collection is "almost" complete. A PE Calypso (full size) and A PE Horn (Jigged bone) is all I need, but what then? The hunt will be over! I will have to find something else to concentrate on so I am in no rush to get them.

When I consider the value of my Spydies I take an average from highs and lows on eBay though I have no intention of selling them.

A year or so ago I put up a Blanchard Police, it sold for a $100, At about the same time I put up a ZDP Caly and it sold for $270. Go figure Ebay is a strange place.

An Ayoob plain edge, mint, went for $272 & some change. I just payed $299.95 for the Yojimbo I just posted here. I noticed the knife was being sold new by Santa Fe, that assured me it was mint. Since I've never have gotten price quotes from Santa Fe to have work done, I didn't have any idea of an amount to add to the original price of the knife. If you snooze, you lose! So I took a chance and hopefully didn't over pay!

Well, SFSW gets $360 for a Civilian done the same way. So I'd guess the price you paid is pretty close to their price for doing up a Yojimbo. Plus, like you said earlier, it was something you really wanted.

Well, to confirm that...just this weekend I picked up the LAST Black Yojimbo at the SFO. Still plenty of blue ones but the black are all gone.

I've owned a Gunting...and it was...ok I suppose. To be honest I never saw any instruction on how to properly use the system, so it become a big bulky box cutter type knife for me.

This Yojimbo just seems like it will be a better knife to fit into my EDC Rotation, all it needed was a slight touch-up on the Profile stone and it becoming hair-splitting sharp.
