    A more "mainstream" Kiwi?

Been playing with Xara X again. Got to wondering how a more leaf shaped blade would work on the Kiwi. Thinking perhaps, if it would, that it might increase the interest in this excellent little knife among those looking for a relatively "traditional" looking folder. Blade is not a true "leaf" pattern, as it does incorporate a fair amount of straight edge. Scale material shown is tortoishell celluloid, inexpensive, easily obtained, yet with an old fashioned elegance.

    Plain steel...

Yes, I like it, both of them.
I like a bit of belly on my blades and a fairly sharp tip as well.

This certainly increased my interest. I like both of them and I would buy at least one.
Great job Paul. I am very impressed. Still love your Persian, but it is only the dream. At least for now.

    havent bought a kiwi yet

but i like this design also but would this not be moving into the kopa territory ?

    leaf shaped ,bolster ??

only have a kopa and dont have a kiwi like i said so if there is a size diffrents then i would be wrong

and all that said i would still like a kiwi with a leaf shaped blade this being my favorite blade shape

better to have a knife and not need it
than to need a knife and not have it

I would carry one with that blade.
The Wharnie blade shape is good for some things but some types of cutting is just very hard to do with it.

That's a fairly good looking knife. It looks quite natural too, I was wondering what you did with it (other than make it flat ground). I guess it's true that it would then become a little closer to the kopa, in theory.

There is one place a knife like this would easily fit in, the byrd lineup . I've been thinking that a gentleman's byrd would be a great thing to add. A slim and classy knife would be perfect for some people I'd give gifts to, but I don't have the cash to buy a kiwi or a kopa. I think a folder around the price of a G-10 robin would sell great if it was similar to the little kiwi, bolsters would be nice too, and price could be kept low if something along the lines of micarta is used. Damascus steel would be fun to, but a damascus byrd?! That's just crazy! (but crazy fun )

    Hi Paul,

That looks very nice, maybe we can ask Sal if it's possible to do something like that in a sprint run.
Tha Damascus one I like best, but i think what the answer from Sal will be: Does it cut anybetter........!
The leaf shape blade looks great on the Kiwi.

    kind regards,

The more I look at it the more I like it.
Deacon, how about starting a thread asking who would for sure buy one?
    I would.
I may be off here but I wouldn't think it would be hard to do a sprint run in it as the only thing that would change is the grind on the blade.
They could even use the same scales as the currant Kiwi or maybe the older jigged bone if there is enough left over from the first run.
If by chance it could be done in Damasteel and mammoth I would do whatever I needed to do to get in on it.

nice work Paul, I like the moddied leaf shape blade.....to be honest, the damasteel/tortoise shell is not my cuppa......but a solid zdp189 blade with your blade shape and Cocobolo would be more "my speed" ......but if Sal and Co. make it .....i'll probably buy it anyways.....

In all honesty, if you're going for a more "mainstream" appeal, you'd be better off with a plain stainless handle IMO, or a handle that would match the current standard Kiwi.

I think I'd be more interested in buying the Kiwi in its current form...to me the blade shape it has now is what attracts me to it in the first place.

It would be even cooler with Charlie Brown Yellow handles, with a black lapis zig zag!

I like the idea. The blade shape turns the little Kiwi almost into a type of Ed Schempp ethnic design.

The same happening with me. Now I like Odin's Eye Damasteel more than standard version. So I am in for both. I love gents folders and leaf shape is my favorite also. Very nice knives.

I like it. The blade seems to flow well with the over-all shape. I love the damasteel blade alot. I think it seems a little, busy shall we say, with the turtle hatchling shell . Just kidding, but I do think the tortoishell celluloid is too much for the blade. The top example is a very nice looking knife. I would go for one if the funds were available.

    Thumbs up classy

    Hi Paul,
Great work with Xara, congratulations and thanks for sharing. Frankly, the regular Kiwi doesn't quite turn me on, I'd rather have liked it with a normal wharncliffe blade instead of that hump that breaks the natural flow of the spine. But I'd go for yours in a heartbeat. IMHO, the knife now is much more classy, the blade shape together with the bolsters and tortoise reminds me of Case somehow.
