    Poliwog - perfect fit, but...

    Hi all.

Been lurking for a while, so I decided to finally post something.

I have collected a decent little Spyderco collection. To name a few: Poliwog, Salsa, Lava, Waved Delica, Waved Endura, Cricket, Dodo, Lil Temp, Kiwi, Yojimbo.

Of them all, the Waved Delica wins for my favorite EDC, but the Poliwog fits my hand the best. If it weren't for the fact that the Poliwog was a bit too heavy, and wide (when closed), it would win as my favorite EDC. It just melts into my hand and is so darn comfortable.

    So my question:

What other Spyderco knives match closest to the Poliwog ergonomics? Based solely on picutres in the Spyderco catalogs, it would appear that the Navigator 2 and The Native might be close. I do not have the luxury of any stores close to me that carry Spyderco knives, so I can't go out and test drive any of the Spyderco models sadly. So I guess what I am looking for is a lighter more compact and EDC friendly version of the Poliwog.

    Any comments or suggestions?

    Thanks.

I think this one comes very close to the Polliwog(except for the blade that is)

Yep, the Dodo seems to be close, and it does feel good in my hand, but not quite like the Poliwog. And similar to the Poliwog, the Dodo doesn't ride in my pokcet quite right. I suppose the way a Knife fits the hand and rides in the pocket is a very personal preference. My best bet is probably to just get to a store that carries the Spyderco line and try them all out for myself. Or I could just realize that the Poliwog is 'the one' for me and learn to deal with the weight, bulk and how wide it is when closed and riding in my pocket.

Anyone know of any such stores in the Southern NJ area by chance?

    Thanks.

    Welcome to the forums.

You might want to look at the lava.

    Thanks for the warm welcome.

I actually do have a Lava, and although it is a very nice little knife, it does not fit my hand as nicely as the Poliwog does - go figure! It is almost like Spyderco designed the Poliwog to fit my hand - that is just how good it feels in my hand. It's almost creepy.

Here's a goofy Idea, get it customized. I'm not sure how easily that ball lock would be for making a new handle, but I'm sure it could be done.

Something tells me that skeletonized Ti liners with your choice of micarta would probably get it down to the weight you'd be looking for.

If you are good with your hands, this would be a fun project for you to try, just disassemble and mark the contours and holes of the poli on the choice handle material. There is nothing like the coolness of a custom spydie, only multiplied by the fact that you did it yourself!

For "hand feel", the Native, for blade angle when held in a normal grip, the Lava.

Joe, IIRC, STR did one Dodo, said it was interesting, ONCE. Poliwog "might" be easier due to the open front on the ball track, but then again it might not.
