    Maybe i need to re-think my corrosion test strategy...

    It's pretty clear that I won't be able to get the Salt series to rust with my current "salt spray" test, it's been pretty well established that under normal (and even some extreme) situations, H-1 *will not* rust....

    I'm probably wasting my time trying to get H-1 to rust, so i got to thinking, the salt-spray corrosion test *is* useful and can return useful data (re; my first corrosion test that killed a Sheffield hawkbill cheapie in one hour, and a CCC butterfly knife in 24 hours), so why not use the testing chamber to test *other* Spydercos/Byrds

    I'm thinking that maybe i should test some of my lesser used Spydies and/or some inexpensive Spydies and Byrds

    knives i already have and can test;
    AUS-6 Jester (Forest Green FRN)
    8etc... Byrd Meadowlark (black coated)

    Inexpensive knives i could purchase and test and not feel bad about damaging
    Byrd Starling
    S30V Native (wally-world native)

    knives i *need* to test, but can't bring myself to damage;
    any VG-10 blade

    ideally, what would be cool is to find a way to get a selection of steels from Spyderco, i'm thinking the disc of metal cut out to create the SpyderHole, i'm assuming the SpyderDisc is either thrown out or perhaps sent back to the steel production facility to be recycled/remelted into the next batch of steel....

    If i could get a few SpyderDiscs, that'd be a great way to test the corrosion resistance of the steel without sacrificing knives....

    So, Sal, would it be possible for me to purchase a small batch of SpyderDiscs for a reasonable price? it'd make the corrosion tests so much easier

    For giggles.. you could take a jar of sea water and just leave a Salt series in it for several months and see what happens.

    I will help again. I am going to the beach tomorrow and will fill up a glass jar with the Atlantic nasty water and put my Salt 1, and a VG10 blade and G2 blade . I will let it sit for 2 weeks.

    Anything for the cause.

    Pacific Salt is headed to you.

    What if you just take off the blade and use only that?

    Ok G2 and Aus 6 starting to get rusted only on the lock. I have them in a plastic bottle with water from the Atlantic ocean. I got it at Coney Island. It sit in my window with cap off the bottle. It has been in the bottle since Sat night.

    Salt 1 will be in tonight.

    okay, so corrosion seems to set in within 24 hours or so on G2 and AUS-6, pretty much what i expected, i think i'll pick up a Byrd Robin to test 8Etc.. steel in the chamber

    right now the new occupants of the chamber are a "frankensteined" Victorinox Signature Lite with non-lite scales (corrosion began on the scissors pivot in 24 hours), and a Bantam (one small spot of rust on the blade, a little aluminum corrosion in the handles, Combo tool is still okay), rust appeared 24 hours ago

    looks like my test chamber will start to rust a blade within 24 hours worst case, and within an hour best case....

    I'd hate to see how S30V would react to salt spray.....

    Thumbs up Been there .... done that

    Guys

    For the record ---
    One of my Pacific Salts ended up under the kayak seat for about three weeks. There it luxuroiusly bathed in saltwater, seaweeds, sand and sunblock of every kind. At the end of this "test" ( and yes the knife was submerged for over 14 days) the H1 blade didn't have a mark on it.

    Wish I could say the same for the clip and the screw and the pivot.....
    the screw holding the clip showed the worst rust of all. I'll be looking for a replacement rather soon from the Spyderco factory. The clip rusted where the paint had worn off and the pivot was the least rusted.....Nothing a little WD and Militec bath couldn't fix.

    H-1 rules in saltwater.

    That's my story, and I'm stickin with it.
