Hmm... so VG-10 *can* rust after all....

Last night i was inspecting my Harpy a little closer than normal, and i noticed..... *rust*, in the well where the lockbar drops into the blade, locking it open, it's just minor surface rust, cosmetic only, and i should be able to scrub it out with a microfiber cloth and a stick, I'm not worried in the least

today at lunch, when inspecting my Cricket, i noticed what looked like rust spots under the clip, so i pulled the clip, and as expected, rust, minor spotting just under the clip, and seeing how much time the Cricket spends in the watch pocket of my jeans, i'm not surprised

I'm not worried, after all a good scrubbing with Flitz should solve the issue

.....meanwhile, my Salt 1 is on day 8 in the saltwater-spray torture chamber, 24 hour exposure to highly corrosive saltwater spray, completely unscathed.....

given the amount of pocket time the Harpy and Cricket see in my sweaty pockets, i'm actually rather impressed, the only rust that has appeared has been on "hidden" surfaces not accesable through normal cleaning....

Yea, VG-10 is still very impressive when it comes to corrosion resistance in my experience. I was wondering, H-1 won't rust under normal conditions, I think we've established that. It won't even rust under the tourture-test conditions you've set up. What about really, really corrosive stuff? I don't know much about chemistry, but I do know that there are other types of corrosion besides oxidation. What would be necessary to push a Salt knife to some really ridiculous limits as far as testing corrosion resistance is concerned?

I've been wondering the same thing myself, i'm *SURE* i'm wasting my time with the salt-spray torture test, if any corrosion was going to appear, it would've by now under those conditions....

So i'm wondering if i should change the testing parameters, *I* clearly don't have the equipment or knowledge to try to induce corrosion with other chemical means, so why not put the salt-spray chamber to better use, determine how long the *other* steels take to start rusting, start with my Aus-6 Jester, then go to wally-world, pick up an S30V Native, pick up a Byrd Starling at KTP (or just put my black-coated Meadowlark in there to test 8etc... steel's corrosion resistance, as well as the effectiveness of the black coating, find a cheap VG-10 blade....

perform the test one at a time to prevent cross-contamination, that way we could get some valid data on the corrosion resistance of *other* Spyderco steels

I really want to see how quickly S30V takes to rust, if i buy the Native from Wally World, i can rust it, then flitz off most of it, and return it to wally world in exchange for another one....

i get to test the corrosion resistance of S30V *AND* get to screw over wally-world, it's a win-win situation

It may not be a win-win situation for the person that buys the knife next, or a win-win for Spyderco if Wal Mart returns it to them.

D'OH! *STOP* being the voice of reason, JohnnyKwst...

i was only joking about returning the knife to wally-world anyway....

    VG 10 rust

I have several lady martial arts firnds that have rust problems when they carry thier cricket in the top of thier bra. Rinse off the knife occassionally to avoid the corrosive salt build up and lube as necessary.

To corrosion test the H-1 a friend submerge a blade in the Dead Sea for two weeks. No corrosion was found. All his stainless knives rusted when he served in the area previously...Take Care...Ed

Brought a $20 SE Caly Jr with me rafting 2 years ago, it showed surface rust in the large serrations. Wasn't sure what to expect. It was still a good result for VG-10. S30V would have been nothing but trouble.
