Spyderco Kitchen Sword

Got this at the sale last weekend and thought some of you may not have seen one of these. I certainly had not. This is one long kitchen knife.

Whoa!!! Are you telling me that is a Spyderco? If that is a Spydie tell me about it. In any case that is an impressive knife.

Did it came with a box? Was there a number/model name on it?

That'd be great for cutting tuna steaks,where you want to cut the fish in one pull to avoid discoloring the meat.

They have that one and it's little brother on page # 160 in the hard back version of the Spyderco Story book. I have been looking for a pair of those for quite some time. I think that they made those with AUS-10 blade steel is what someone told me once.

It really bums me out that Spyderco got out of the kitchen knife market. I would bet that if they would make more of them with the hard handles like this model that the market would greet them kindly.

I saw three of them at the sale, but they weren't there for long. They came in a box, but did not have a model name or number on it. I was told that the blade is made of MBS-26 steel.

hanswurst -they are on my site, it's the SP-M300 (almost at the end). I was just curious if 'SP-M300' is the right number format for the model.

Spyderco did three sizes of these. First they did an experimental run, KX01, KX02 and KX03 with rounded handles, and later the production run SP-M300, 240 and 120. '300' is 300mm which is 12". The german distributor had one for sale at the IWA, but it was 190 EURO's ($220).
How much did you pay if I may ask?

I did not realize it was the SP-M300, because the info on your site states that it has a blade length of 4 5/8".
The knife was just a bit less than $220 , but I don't want to rub it in.

It also says here in the Spyderco Story book on page 160 right underneath the pictures of those 2 knives that they are indeed made of AUS-10. Now I know when it comes to reference that you have the most of the data on the older Spyders. I was told that MBS-26 didn't even come along until the late 90s or the early 2000s. They were even still making Catchermans with AUS-8 as late as 2000 I am sure. It was 2002 before I got a Catcherman with MBS-26 steel in it.

AFAIK, KX01 & KX02 (& KX03?) are indeed AUS-10, with the japanese style handle. The pic on my site of it is pretty good, since it's a scan from a B&W photograph I got from Joyce. It shows the lack of visible tang in the KX series.
M300, M240 & M120 are MBS-26 with the 'french' style handle.
This is a scan of an older Ironstone catalog (1996) with the 'french' style knives. (I'm gonna put up the complete catalog as PDF soon)

Wow Ted that is so cool. I have never seen that flyer before. Also I never knew that Spyderco at one time sold a Japanese Waterstone . Ted have you or anyone else as far as that goes> ever had one of Spyderco's Japanese Waterstones. That must have been around the early 90s when that picture was made. I bet it might have even been in the 80s when that particular ad was out. But what about the Japanese Waterstone??? Was that possibly one of those obscure items that was sold through IRONSTONE???
