    C14 rescues

    Hey all..

I was looking at the rescues, I'm probably going to collect them all when I can, but for now.. I was looking at the C14. I am looking to get the 93mm, the larger, not the 79mm. I noticed there is one with a somewhat dipped blade (below)
    <a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/deadboy519/c14.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting"></a>
and this is the other, with the straighter blade (below)

    <a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v294/deadboy519/c142.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting"></a>

I'm wondering, obviously there's a difference, but is the first knife an early model that will be harder to get a hold of? I like the first better for some reason, kinda weird, but I like the blade better, and I would like to get that one soon if it'll be difficult to locate further down the road. I'm also diggin' the assist w/ and w/out the carbide tip, and the D'Allara (full serrated rescue). You guys are the experts, so I figured I'd ask you. Thanks a ton.

The top one is from 2003 iirc. The groove os for better tip control with the index in place. It was produced for no more than one or two years. As for the Assist, the one with the cardbide is still in production. The other one, the Assist II, was cancelled last year.

    Hope this helps...

BTW' A model is generally cancelled due to poor sales, so they are harder to find. Good luck

The current production model of the Blue rescue has a crescent shape removed Listed Here I would highly recommend you buy one. You will love it!

I cannot comment about the D'Allara model but I have owned the blue rescue & the Assist model. I prefer the rescue for two main reasons: its handle has a much thinner profile and it has a finger choil. The handle of the Assist (& the D'Allara) is very thick for a folder. It might be more comfortable for extended use but I found that it was just too thick to carry in my pocket.

Also, I did not like the cobra hood on the blade of the Assist. Since the knife already has an opening hole, I found the cobra hood to be an unnecessary feature.

My work EDC as a Nurse is the exact Blue Handled 93mm Rescue you have pictured. I got it right as they were transitioning to the newer model. Even then I had to call around to find one. I prefer the look of that model to the newer one, though in function it makes no difference to me.

    Question Stainless C-14 & C-45

How come I never hear nothing about the stainless Rescue models. They are as rare as frog hairs but on the other hand I have always rated them among the very best constructed Spydercos of all time. Yes I like the Rescue models and I have a couple but I do prefer the stainless handled ones the best. Most Spyder Heads don't even know that they exist. JD

A slick stainless steel handle is not the best thing to be used in a rescue situation. When a SS handle comes in contact with a fluid (such as water, sweat, blood,...) it become very slippery. Plus, SS handles are difficult to handle in very cold conditions. I would guess that for these reasons, rescue workers would much rather have a grippy FRN handle.

The SS rescues do look pretty good though

I would think the Stainless Rescues might be less popular due to the weight increase. Just my theory.

Not the best pic, but the best i can do right now. I think it may be a SS mariner.

Yes Andre, that's a C02 Mariner. The C14 Rescue originated as an FRN version of it. Both the handle and blade shapes of the original, integral clip, version of the C14 look almost identical to it. The all stainless versions of the C14 and C45 Rescues came at about the same time the C14 was re-designed to use the barrel bolt style metal clip, somewhere around 1997. Both the handle and blade shapes were modified to accomodate this, so the knife now looked quite different from the Mariner...

As has already been explained the "forward finger notch" was introduced in 2003, but dropped recently due to negative reaction from users in the "save and serve" community, the primary market for these knives. While I liked the forward notch, in many ways the current version of the C14 is the best yet. It finally has a truly usable 50/50 choil, 14mm thumb hole, and traction grooves on the spine. The Atlantic Salt, its H-1 steel bladed sibling, takes things up yet another notch by adding traction grooves to the choil.

This is a C14 Rescue stainless steel - Take a look at the serrations - they start with two small ones!

I have the older style Rescue with the finger groove in the top of the blade. I seem to fall back to this knife after carrying something different for a couple of days. It is strong and reliable.

I'm looking for an Orange 79mm next.
