    Recommend a New Knife

    For the past few years, I've carried a Dragonfly a friend gave everywhere I went. Unfortunately, sometime last week I managed to lose it . That knife was great and now that it's gone, I'm amazed at how often I reach for it only to find an empty pocket. So now I need a replacement.

    The obvious answer is to just get another Dragonfly, but I'm still hopeful that my old one will show up (I plan on moving in the next few months) and I'd like to try something different. I'm looking for is something similar in size to the Dragonfly and is good for everyday use. I don't have a Spyderco dealer anywhere near me, so I have to buy without being able to try it out first, so I'm turning to the experts for help. Any recommendations?

    Was the D-fly the SS version or the FRN version. I'd suggest getting a Cricket. I have one on the way. Its a small knife but cuts like a much bigger one. You could also try the Spin that just came out, but I haven't heard much about that one.

    the spydie family is quite large so I suggest you to take a look at Ted's webpage with the visuals of every model made so far to make your own selection in a first time and then will be able to give you our views on the knives you selected...

    Welcome to the forum BigMo!

    If you want to stick with something that is approximately the same size as the Dragonfly then I would suggest the following knives:

    Meerkat - FRN handle, wire clip (Discontinued but still available on Ebay)
    Salsa - Aluminum handle, wire clip (Discontinued but still available on Ebay)
    Navigator II - SS handle (Currently available)

    Similar to the Dragonfly, all of the above knives have a finger choil. The finger choil makes a little knife feel like a big knife. If you are not familiar with any of these knives, simply use the search function on the forum.

    Or you could just buy another Dragonfly. If the other one turns up then you have 2 dragonflys. I don't see a problem with that

    May I suggest the not-so-hard to fins calypso Jr (Any version)... Known as the pocket scalpel;

    or the Delica (A classic), the Honda Accord of knives...

    Or on the more high end, a Persian, big or small. Definitely different from your Dragonfly, but it is soooooo sexy....

    I hope your fly shows up soon.... I too have lost beloved spydies and it is no fun... As for knives... Hunt around for a Calypso JR.. They are one heck of a knife, and if ya can pick up one of the ZDP's, do it... Hair popping sharp right out of the box...

    Now if ya like to step up a level... You will not go wrong with either of the Persian's... Great feel and lockup... Or take it to the next level of and seek out an ATR, Chinook I or II, Military or even the Civilian...

    In the same size, I'd recommend:

    Kiwi - best office knife without a clip
    Kopa - best office knife with clip and more practical for me for other chores.
    Navigator II - very sturdy design, more solid than the SS Dragonfly.
    Lava - I think I'd wait for that one, since it's got more clip options, more affordable than a Kopa and a full flat grind.

    Thanks for all the suggestions. The Dragonfly that I had was the FRN version. I've already looked through the online catalogue, but I wanted to get a feel for which knives people would recommend before asking about specifics. Based on what people have suggested, I like the looks of the following knives: Navigator II, Kiwi, Calypso Jr. (what's a ZDP?) and the Delica. I do have a few questions, though.

    Several people have suggested waiting for the Lava. What is it? Are there any images of it? Any idea when it'll be released?

    I really like the look of the SS Kiwi, but it looks like it might be too small. How hard is it to use compared to the Dragonfly? Is it very sturdy?

    As for ZDP... It is really called ZDP189 steel/blade that is on the Burgundy Calypso.... Outstanding blade....

    As for the Kiwi and it being sturdy.. not sure I do not own one as of yet..... Someone will chime in here.... Deacon....? Bring it on....

    All the suggestions are great knives but I have to through the Adventura into the mix. Great little knife.. comfortable in the hand and disappears in the pocket. With all my new addtions I still cant seem to keep this one out of my pocket.

    Although I dont own one ,I have handled the SS Kiwi and they are very nice and appear super sturdy.I did however find them a little difficult to open.Admittedly,I'm not sure if this is because I find the handle too narrow,or if it is simply because I have not spent enough time with one.The Kiwi is not offered with a clip,so it truely is a pocket knife.
    $.02 more from me.
