    apollo-

just don't tell them you collect spydies. you can't tell girls EVERYTHING, especially that you collect knives, because they will want you to spend your knife money on them!

Not all ladies are afraid of knives, take a look at some of the women around here, they carry knives some men are afraid to carry.

At 16 though, the majority of girls are going to be afraid of knives, I have young girls that work for me that cringe every time I use my Dodo in front of them. Despite my preaching that it's not a weapon, they still are afraid of it.

Don't worry about a girl not liking your knives. My girlfriend hates my knives, but she TOLERATES them, which is all you need to look for. No need to rush to find a girlfriend, you're only 16, you've got PLENTY of time.

When the time is right, the right girl will find you...

It really depends on the female. My X was scared to death of them.. but my fiancé carries two everyday. (Almite Walker or Pink Delica 3 and Pink Jester or Pink Cricket.) Keep your priorities in check and you'll find the "one" in good time. Your still young.

Hey apollo, don't worry. Knives scare young women because they might think that you are a criminal. So don't tell them at once that you like knives. Let them know you first and after a while you tell them that you collect pocket knives. just like beerglasses and zippo lighters and postage stamps collecting pocket knives is a normal hobby.

Try to carry a small knife when you are on a date, don't wear the Chinook or the military they are too large. Buy a small knife like a small salt with a yellow handle.

You will still be able to have a knife but the girls won't get scared from the yellow handle.
It's better to be judged by 12 then to be carried by 6

    Apollo,
Never ever tell a girl not to be afraid of you. A little excitement doesn't hurt. Just tell them you collect knives and you will be alright.

Don't rush to compromise on who you are and what you like just to please a woman. Hold out for a woman who likes you for you. Many women are attracted a man who's not afraid to carry a weapon and protect his girl.

Look at me... turning 22 in a month, been single since fall '02... more freedom, more money, less time tied down.

Another 2 months of class, find work, get settled, THEN start looking. Until then, it's the last thing on my mind. I haven't HAD a free night since school started in sept anyways, usually have a project/lab/exam to work on. This weekend I have about 45min of work to do on my power supply and 2 linear labs to work on. Tad hard to be out every night and stay on top.

I say don't change anything, give it time, and you'll find one thats right for you.

My wife is not a fan of knives but like others have said...she tolerates them. Ha...now I am making them

Everything in time..you are young and have a whole life time of misery from women ahead of you ...just kidding! The right one will come along. Just let them in on your hobby slowly.

Take Care and your english is fine!

I think we need a female perspective on this issue. We may be a little biased with our opinions.

Any of the lovely Spyderco forum ladies care to chime in?

She's pretty cool with my knives, actually when I show her my work she spots every possible flow.
Now I don't like being told that I'v been messing so I make them as close to perfect as I can.

Remember you are talking about knives named after a small creature (spiders) that most women (and some men) really hate! You got two strikes there already.

Now if Spyderco released the "Pony" line of knives you would be in!

The main thing here is to remember why you are "dating" I would assUme that you aren't looking to get married. That means you are looking for fun(no I don't mean sex). Since you are not looking for the woman to spend the rest of your life with it's ok to leave out some things, like your knives, your axe-murdering x etc.

had this girl try to talk to me at a bar the other night she was none to bright nor much a looker and she asked me what i do (thinking to self heres my last chance to get rid her) ooo i make knives part time
she looked to be a shepeople and i was right small talk ended and she left
her friend walked up to me a bit later and asked why i told her friend that i made knives and i said i do make knives she looked at me funny like right so not wanting to bother with all this i told her if she wanted to see some that i made i had 2 in the truck never got rid of 2 bar flies so fast in my life

also this was not some dive bar at the dive bars around here its not a big deal for me to bring in a fixed blade and show it off i love small towns
    sometimes

    it was fun tho
btw i would think having a grinder a few buffers a small mill and a kiln that i use to make knives counts as part time knife maker

Come on Apollo, telling people (and especially girls!) that you collect knives at 16 is the last thing to do, I'm 28 next month and only my 3 best friends know...
Talk about music, movies, sports, her hobbies and tastes (very important), even sex (not porn!) but never ever talk about knives!

you want the key to a girl's heart: make her talk, show her you can listen.

I agree with the suggestion to let the girl get to know you before you start talking about knives. As has been said, society in general has been taught to demonize weapons of any kind, and that includes knives. If you really thought about it, collecting of just about anything isn't exactly mainstream, be it stamps, coins, comics, or guns even. Compound that stigma with the focus on a weapon, and the impression is even worse. Welcome to demagoguery. I don’t tell anyone about any weapons I have unless they ask directly, and even then I do so with great caution. It’s called “being discrete”. Once they get to know you as a person, they’ll be more accepting of the knives. However, simply telling someone straight off about such things can IMHO rightfully be seen as a “red flag” as it doesn’t mirror what most people accept as rational behavior. There are exceptions. This forum is one of them, and it can be a good place to satisfy the need to share you enjoyment of quality cutlery without scaring the sheeple.

    P.S.
Senate has it exactly. Couldn't be better said.
First they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not stand up, because I was not a Trade Unionist.
