    Let's talk about Tasman salt.

Since I can't get a Delica4 till who knows when, I want to turn my attention to Tasman Salt. I saw one today, looks interesting, but first some questions.
    Who is Tasman?
What sort of cutting do you do with the hawk bill?

I am very impressed with my Salt1, the H1 steel is so very sharp. I really never thought I could like anything like H1 after using S30V, VG10. I think I could like the Tasman if I thought I would use the curved blade.

All kinds. The hawkbill tip is wonderful when precision cutting is necessary. Carpet, linoleum, etc. Packaging, cardboard. Pretty much anything but heavy food prep...

You will, my friend. You will...

Great info from Hannibal (as usual ), but to be perfectly honest, the name comes from the Tasman Sea. We literally spent quite a bit of time mulling over the names of various bodies of water for this one.

Fascinating! I guess a name is important.

I do cut lots of cardboard boxes.

Oh, how do you sharpen? I could guess, use the pointed side of the Sharpmaker?

There is a whole other thread on Hawkbill uses not too far down the board. For me, they shine outdoors: in the garden, around the yard, on the river. Nothing handles tough, fibrous material like a SE hawkbill, and controls it better than any other blade style.

I guess that limits to the number of Salt models we could expect Eventually you'll run out of bodies of water

Hawkbills also are great to use when opening toy packaging. Cripes, I cannot believe how "well fastened" toys are now to the cardboard backing!

I EDC'd an old school Merlin in AUS8 as my primary carry...it never let me down. Only thing that cannot be done is a rocking cut on a flat surface...whoopee.

I cannot wait for this blade shape in H1 for sure!!!

Actually you are both right, since the Tasman Sea was named for Abel Tasman. See

I ordered one right away but as I wanted a yellow handle I have to wait a little longer. Although I probably want all the yellow Salts eventually I also ordered a serrated one this time.

I'm up for three, but one isn't for me. Needed the black and yellow, too.

I wish and hope that Tasman has wave version. Otherwise, I might be busy with my dremel machine.

    Try This

Tie a tight line around your wrist. The kind that you could possibly get from a
poorly thrown net, or tangled in during a line recovery. A regular drop point is not a good choice to cut your hand or limb free without cutting flesh.

Now take a hawkbill, and using the spine of the knife insert the tip between your flesh and the line that needs to be cut. Flip the knife exposing the blade, and your limb is free with no cuts.

Also great for cutting that tight seatbelt away without injuring someone.
