CPM-s30v is good (great) steel and it'd be nice to have an American made hawkbill!

I want 8670-modified, a popular saw-blade steel (many of Vermont American's non-carbide-tipped blades; and many of those, too; are made from it). As a steel that's relatively tough near full hardness (RC66), it can take and hold a fine edge. Its grains and carbides will be smaller than any high-carbon stainless (a plus to both toughness and sharpness). Combined with a Ball-Bearing lock (as judged from my poll on Super Tanker Hawkbill locks), it should be really easy to keep the blade cleaned and oiled. While it's called 8670-modified and 0186 in the USA, the steel is also available on most every other continent, too, so the hawkbill could also be made in Japan, Taiwan, Italy, or China.

SUPERHAWK, H1 SPYDERHAWK, Left-Handed MILITARY, GAYLE BRADLEY Folder, Carbon Fiber/S90V Para 2, and Yojimbo 2 thanks to spydercovt.com!
My vote is for S30V.. For the simple fact that we all know it is a great steel. Although ZDP is the king of steels right now. I fear that if we do go with ZDP, the price will jump a good amount. I'm afraid that a heavy price tag will push alot of folks away.
Also, if the model does well, we can always push for a ZDP Sprint run later in the future...

I would go for VG10 because of greater rust resistance and the agressive serrations![]()

I'm with spydutch, 2nd vote for VG-10. I love this steel, very low maintanence!Originally Posted by spydutch

I'm with Michael...it's nice to see made in USA on products. Above and beyond that preference, s30v is a great steel. VG-10 would be my second choice.Originally Posted by Michael Cook

I've been waiting to see a spydie in D2.

I voted for S30V but I would like a "Special Edition" run of them in ZDP-189. I think if the main knife was in ZDP-189 it might run a few folks off price-wise. Although I would not be objectionable to any other top notch steel if my brethren decide on another one.
The main thing at this point is to get the first ones in the display cases ASAP.![]()

I voted American!
Follow the mushin, but pay it no heed.
You're right, everything but S30v would put it in Seki City. I have confidence in Seki's quality, but there's something about S30v that just makes me happyOriginally Posted by zenheretic

I said S30V because if i were to get a hawkbill it would be PE for sure and as far as PE knives are concerned S30V is a great steel that cuts like a lightsaber. If it were SE i would say VG-10 as the S30V serrations are not as agressive looking, and i believe VG-10 is the perfect SE steel.

VG-10, simply because I prefer it to the other steels, and if we're lucky the knife will be manufactured by the same company that did the Persian, because they do d*** good work.

I have to concur with pjrocco, zenheretic, plowboy, Michael Cook, Axlis, and Irish Lager that not only would S30V be the most appropriate but that would pretty much mandate that the Super Tanker Hawkbill would be, and should be a Golden Colorado made knife.
If you guys are opposed to me thinking in that slant then feel free to voice here on this thread or you can PM me. But with the deletion of the Lil Temperance, Dodo, Gunting and Ti ATR I think we have a vacuum of sorts and a lack of good flagship knives coming out of the Golden Colorado factory. I do have USA pride at this juncture. Now I don't mean anything disrespectful to our good Forum brothers/sisters from other countries. Because I value them very much. But I will make no bones or no apologies for liking "MADE IN THE USA" knives.
This knife has the potential of maybe being a new icon of Spyderco. With all the brainstorming and all of the great contributions that were manifested on the NEW HAWKBILL thread I think it should be a flagship knife and representative of this top notch knife Forum. So if I am wrong in my way of thinking here please tell me where I have missed it? But I am really looking forward to this project coming to fruition. OK troops let's don't quit now![]()
