First knife

HI,

I found the beautiful spyderco knife and i would like to buy one but i don't now wich one is good. so i would like if you can give your opinion on the ''best'' knife to have.

I think you could not go wrong with the grey Calypso Jr. It is very affordable and still available. It has great steel and fits the hand and is acceptable in polite society.

Welcome to the Forum, your writing is excellent, don't worry about it.

What's your definition of best? Would you prefer something heavy duty and utilitarian, or more of a gentlemens knife? Big or small? Price range? What are you allowed to carry over there(not familiar with French knife laws)

Give us some details, and we can give you a lot more options.

Welcome nfinite,
There are many choices, but I think you would be happy to start with a navigator 2. It's small so you won't scare people that aren't use to you running around with a knife

Although it's small it cuts and feels like a much bigger knife the fit and finish are top notch

It really does'nt matter because once you get one, you'll be back for another

i want a medium knife, not a laydbug but not the G10 also, in the middle. Also for the price i won't spend more then 150$$

I'm thinking a Native, Native III or Persian 75mm would be a good choice for you. They are all mid-size knives without G10, and in your price range....

I agree that the grey calypso jr is a great choice. I think that you can easily find the knife that fits your needs in VG-10 steel. Check out the Native III as well, or if you want to go w/ S30V steel the Native is a sound choice.

All extremely comfortable in the hand, cut's like crazy, no G-10, and all available for under $150

The Persian would be the top choice, since it's going to be gone soon.

I would go for the: (from top to bottom)

Delica/SE or Endura/SE (VG 10 steel, great edgeholding, easy to sharpen)
Pacific Salt/SE or Salt/SE (H1 steel, cannot rust, good edgeholding, easy to sharpen)

IMO these are all good choices for a first knife

Furthermore you should buy a sharpmaker to to keep your serrated knives shaving sharp

.

IF you never ever had a Spyder before I would start conservatively. I would go with either a Native or the small version of the Manix. Both knives are very easy to handle with efficiency. They are both made with great blade steels and their handles are well designed. I do believe in safety first. Learn to handle something with total confidence. Then go for the Yojimbos and Karambits of the world.

Here’s what I posted to a similar question some time ago on another thread. The names have changed but everything still applies:

“I should probably save this post to my computer since it’s a commonly asked question. There really is no direct answer to this one, since knives, although primitive tools, can be and are specialized. There are too many variables involved to answer the simple question of “which one is best for you?”. Things like: your hand size, and shape, the local laws, and intended use play into the formula of which one best suits you.

Example:
# 9 suggested the Delica, and an excellent suggestion it is. It’s a three-inch blade (legal in most jurisdictions) with great ergonomics, lightweight, and to use a technical term: “just downright dandy”. With all these things going for it, one might question, “Why isn’t it considered the be-all-end-all, best, general, all-around knife?” The answer is that not everyone is the same. Some people live in areas where even a three-inch blade is illegal, others may have hands that are better suited to something larger. The bottom line is that we’re all different, that’s why so many models are produced.

I suggest looking at the knives you use, or have used extensively in the past. The ones that you liked so much that even though you no longer use them, you still pull them out on occasion just to bring back the memories. Basically, find out what works best for you. Then, go to as many knife dealers as you can, and start fondling. I know this can be frowned upon if you don’t buy, but your intent is to buy, and you want to find the one you want (I would suggest buying at the shop you fondle).

Another variable that comes into play when making this decision is “intended use”. EDC is a great term to start with, but EDC for a CEO, may result in a much different use that EDC for a first responder.

That said:
IMHO, if I am looking for a single folding knife that I will use for any and every task that may come up, and one I will carry with me everywhere, I would try to get the one that covers the most tasks, while still being comfortable in my hand. I would want one that provides both a serrated edge, and a plain edge (CE, or even double blade) because both edge types have their specific uses. Because of that, I would want the blade long enough (in a single blade) so that I don’t have to worry about “running out of blade when I want to use only one type. I would prefer a four-inch blade in this instance. It gives what are essentially two, two-inch blades on one plane. My choice is the Endura because not only is it more economical than other four-inch blades in the line-up, but also because of it’s light weight. Ergonomics will be good on just about any Spyderco/byrd.

Another variable to consider is price. How much are you willing to spend? The general rule with any tool is that “you get what you pay for”. I am not so sure that that rule is so important with the variations in the Spyderco line-up. While I am sure that some of the pricier knives do have some advantages over the Endura/Delica line, I just can’t say for sure if those differences will matter to me as an ELU.

There’s probably some here that I haven’t covered, and I am sure others will be able to fill in. Best thing is to figure out what suites you best, then look for it in the Spyderco line.

I see that you said that $150 is your max price. Whether it’s Euros or USD doesn’t matter; what does matter is what is available within your price range. I don’t think I mentioned H-1 steel. If rust is a concern of yours, then that can limit your choices, and the Salt series is the way to go.
