    Cutting Competition...

Looking at my new Knives Illustrated magazine with a pcture of the Poliwog on the cover, I read an article concerning the International Cutting Competition Trail.
Custom makers cutting with knives of their own creation mostly, slice waterbottles, rope, dowel rods, 2x4's and ping pong balls. This sounded like a little fun so I went to their web-site www.cuttingcompetition.com to see an announcement there, that Spyderco plans to sponsor Ed Schempp in ICCT competition, which sounded very cool to me.

    AND

There is a picture of Ed holding what is purported to be the prototype of the production knife he is to compete with...

...I want one, is this the Camp knife mentioned in earlier threads?

Thanks for the link. I have wondered what Ed Schempp looked like.

hhhmmm.... interesting. I didn't even know of such events. Hacking a 2x4 is crazy! lol The water bottles splitting is pretty cool shot though...

If that is the Schempp fixed blade, I'm just going to start working overtime now.

    Yes

Yes that is proto-type number 2. The third prototype has been ground and finished. The steel did not perform up to standards. It will be reheat treated and refinished. The number three proto is a refined version of the one in the picture, yet basically the same knife.

I'm planning a new thread that I will post soon. It will lenghty and it will require feedback from the forum. I need more information from users of knives. My perceptions are born of an environment that fewer and fewer share. I want to stay grounded in EL use. I'm looking at bridging the gap between commercial and custom. I like the challenge of conversion of techniques. Like what you have come to expect from Spyderco this should give you a very high performance tool...Ed

The caption under the photo says:

"Ed is shown holding the prototype of the production version of his cutting knife that Spyderco would produced. Anyone buying this knife and attending a safty school would then be able to compete in ICCT Blue level competitions."

So, it sounds like that is the Schempp fixed blade to expect.

It really looks like a great knife. It kind of fill the gap between an axe an a machete..

Sadly, you are right: Fewer people share the same lifestyle as yours... But fewer people also care for a good quality knife... And this has been discussed before...

As for me, I would be more than glad to have a test drive of it on one of my family trip at the cottage in winter to test drive its ability in an hostile cold environment...!!!

As for this specific prototype: How do you carry it? Is it a Kydex sheath? Is it full tang?

Anyway, it's always nice to hear from you...

Once again when I have made a decision that I have enough knives, Spydies particularly along comes a "Master Designer" with a must have tool. It looks incredible Mr. Schempp! I can see a good deal of Kukri in there which should make it a great "chopper/slicer". Though I can't see the back edge I hope that you have left enough "meat" on there to throw the weight forward when a long slicing cut is made.

I have been using an original Kukri for my camping trips and expeditions for about thirty five years now. There is nothing to beat it for shelter building and heavier camp work. Cold Steel brought out their version some time ago and though I tried three different types I felt my old original was better.

If this knife ever does go into production I will be the first in the queue! Good luck with the competition.

    Regards, Ken
