Interesting thread, "zen." I'm especially encouraged by the posts that the Schempp Camp Knife is still in Spyderco's plan. A large Spyderco FB in 3V is just what the doctor ordered.

It has been shown that fat wallets worn in the back pocket (where many Americans wear their wallets) is bad for the lower back. Spyderco is doing their part to ensure our wallets are never too fat with money, thus improving the overall back health of all Americans.

Thanks for the info re 3V vs M4 for the Schempp Camp Knife. Either way, I'm there.

And roger that on multiple jobs to support the knife (and gun) habit. Also to support my daughter's ballet habit, but that's another story.

Whoa, glad to see I'm not the only one who would soon be needing extra jobs to support the habit

I used to buy a lot of guns as well, but that is some serious hassle in my part of the world, so I took a hard decision, found 4 that I like, and kept another 6 for the memories, and the rest had to go.
Now, I'm considering letting 4 of those go as well, to get some money for the CF Harpy's

But I'll probably end up doing more overtime instead, like last time I had a lot of Spyderco's I wanted

The Stretch, IMO, is a good ergonomic pattern, a good overall size, is well made and should serve well as an effective EDC, even if it is a bit of an "ugly duckling". Show your XYZ model, but cut with your Stretch.

I think our first venture into non stainless steels will be with Ed Schempp's Camp knife.

D-2 is a good steel, as is M-2. We don't know the market size in Spyderco knives for those steels.

We don't have enough for a large quantity of a model and we probably would not use it as a regular steel. So I would want to do a short of of something "fun" like a lil' Temp with an integral Titanium Compression lock.

We didn't plan the model to be a "sprint". I thought the model would be a "classy" Police Model. Long, thin, lithe, micarta, etc. It was also our first VG-10 folder, which was a new steel at the time. I was pretty excited about the new design.

Reality is a firm, but honest teacher and as it tuned out, the model failed in the marketplace and we disco'd the piece after the first run.

Hindsight is supposed to be 20/20, but not always

We "believe" the problems were;

1) It was too large for a "gents" folder.
2) Many dealers wouldn't carry both the Police Model and the Caly and the Police Model was more popular, so the Caly was just not ordered by the dealers.
3) It was pretty expensive.
4) Many of the blades had a slight warp. We discounted the model and included a note with the knife explaining the warp and the discount, thinking the dealers would also discount. But as it turned out, many dealers removed the note and sold them at full MSRP and we got many complaints about the warped blades.

It's always hard to determine why a model fails in the markeplace. What I tell my crew is; "It doesn't matter if I like the design, or if you like the design. It only matters if the customer likes it".

The Caly is, IMO, a beautiful design, but not enough customers agreed so it went away.
