Question Not a Crossbill, it's a Sea Hawk!

    Aloha ALL,

found this while going through my "stuff". Got this around 90-91 in a parking lot in Kaimuki from a well known knife designer/maker before he got well known. I remember getting a few knives from him on a lunch break from class, and he'd tell me about wanting to make knives one day. Imagine that! I got a few Frost Cutlery things from him as well as some Pakistani folders that just disintegrated under real use, usually the lockbars would break. Sad though, that Pakistani steel must've been from a very good batch as it had the properties of a *good* 440C! BTW, this Frost Cutlery Sea Hawk is made in Japan, and I have seen SS Versions of the same knife.

This Sea Hawk I used to carry as my SD folder back in those days, rode in my surf shorts pocket. It also made an excellent work knife, and of course I abused it as I was not as knife educated then. I found it odd in that it *almost* has a Comet Hole and it has the thumb ramp we are all SO familiar with. This about Dragonfly-ish in size. Didn't realize I had some 14-15yrs. of HBill experience! Ya "feelin'" me JDSpydo? Hannibal? Michael Cook? ghostrider? 224477? zackerty?

Glad I found this one...again. LOL, I think I found it a few times over! Just another Hawksbill for all you lovers of this blade shape!

Anyway, thanks for reading and God bless

Nice piece Chad, yes these ''found it again'' knifes are a joy. Most of them cheap and completely forgotten. Funny thing is, you look at it with different eyes now but most of them are not bad at all. Seems that quallity is recognised before you got educated. Anyway, don't loose it again, my friend.

    Mahalo Piet.S,

Yeah...I thought it was the COOLEST knife ever when K** O**** showed it to me. It was the only hawk outta his buncha knives. This brings back a lot of fond memories as in UK KEN's thread...

Keeping it in my gawkBox, even though it's just a Frost. It is my *first* Hawk after all, and I could do the Drop with it...the second knife I could ever do that with, and it was much easier than an old nail knicker one I had prior to it!

    God bless

Cool Chad! This one really comes from K.O.??? I guess now I have to check dads knife boxes and shot some pics of our hawkbills Its always cool to find back some old memories.. I think this one deserves to be in your gawkbox, because it means "something" to you, as well.

    Chad,
Don’t you just love it when you unexpectedly find old treasures? They bring back all kinds of memories, and their condition tells you a lot about how far you’ve come as a knife owner/user. Interesting how this one seems to indicate how you never really got away from your roots.

    Thanks for sharing

    Aloha ALL,

Some clarification is in order here:

224477 and jaislandboy: NO. The Sea Hawk I bought from K.O. several years before he started making knives, so K.O. did NOT "make" the Frost Cutlery Sea Hawk!

He used to buy a buncha knives, as such was his passion, then sell 'em to his friends and what not.

    God bless

Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems you had a taste for hawkbills then, have sort of stayed with them (El Hombre, El Lobo), and eventually come full circle, so to speak.

    Gotcha ghostrider!

Well...it was obviously a love at first site sorta thing! You are right in that I stayed with the venerable hawksbill design.

El Lobo, El Hombre are recurves...or are they H'billing them now?

    God blesses you bro

While it's true they are recurves, they are marketed like a hawkbill with the concept of the blade cutting into the medium as it is drawn across. Somewhat like a hawkbill. That's why I italicized "sort of".

    On the Vaquero Series:

“The serrated edges form a sinuous double curve. This means that whatever material is struck with the inward curving portion of the edge (near the hand) will automatically force the remaining curved edge entirely through.”
    On the Harpy:

“The curving arc holds what you're cutting against the sharpened edge keeping it from slipping off the tip.”
Do I have this wrong? It seems like they’re trying to accomplish a similar task. That is, forcing the cutting medium into the blade as the blade passes through it.

That's a strange looking one Chad, handle looks like its "wrong side up". Though, I suppose, for certain grips that would work well.

    Talking Very Nice!

    My Dear Daywalker,

That knife looks very similar to the one I had conceived some months back, recurved handle and all. It did not meet with particularly warm reviews here on the forum and I have shelved the idea for now.

In short, I love the design of your knife. I still have the Klein hawkbill (my father's) that fascinated me from childhood; I had misplaced it for a while and recovered it about the time I got my first Harpy.

    Lovely knife, Chad. Congratulations!

    Hannibal,
I thought the same thing when I saw the pics. How is the recurved handle for ergo's? It's hard to tell without actually handling such a design, IMHO.

    Aloha ghostrider,

OOOOOOOkay! Now I gotcha! Yes, where the material cut (pulling cut) would meet the first curve on a recurve, it'd be the same more or less as meeting the tip of a HBill.

I am a sucker for a good recurve!

    God bless you my friend

    Hey Paul!

Yeah, it is rather...weird looking, but when I bought it back in 90-91, I thought it was the greatest lil' folder! (Until I discovered the Dragonfly )

Ahhh, I have seen this handle type duplicated before...an easy way to cover up the HawkBlade. From what I can recall...this folder was not uncomfortable in the least...

    God bless KnifeBro

    Aloha Hannibal,

Hey man...I know of one guy who admitted to me that he in fact *hated* my design that is in the pipes right now with ! I hope that "for now" doesn't turn into dismissal.

Klein HBill...what does that look like?

Mahalo Hannibal, and God bless you on your *path*.

    Hey ghostrider,

Forgot to answer this...uh, they are not too bad. Guess 'cause the knife isn't large enough to cause a stir in the hand with the "backwards" handle. It's a three finger knife...Any larger and I think it'd suck.

    s'narc would love it!

wowsers! a pikal hawkbill!! I love the knife but the implications of what that would do to meat are pretty freaky!
