not to stir anything up or anything...

Hello all, I was just curious what alot of you have against the company benchmade. I looked on their website for fixed blades and was rather pleased. I later went to my House of Knives and looked at some of there stuff. I do infact dislike the Folders they put out so its not like im switching over. Just wondering what you guys have against the company cause I would like to get one of their fixed blades but don't wan't to be shunned from the community

Well i don't believe that many people have a problem with BM. I think it is a matter of preference.

I personally own two Benchmades and I am overall happy. Do they come close to Spyderco, I don't think so.. but do they make a good product? Sure...

Also, no one will "shun" on you for getting a Benchmade. Most of us are "knife brothers/sisters" not just Spyderco..

I don't hate Benchmade, I just prefer Spyderco... that said, I think the blatent ripoff of the spyderhole on the skirmish didn't do any good to the relations between these companies...

I'm not against Benchmade...I have one that's served me well over the years.

I'm not a subscriber to the "strictly one knife manufacturer worshipping syndrome". I like lots of different manufacturers...Spyderco, Strider, Emerson, Benchmade. I don't limit myself.

I like the great friendship that most of us have here, and what we talk about, so I frequent this area. And, of course, I like Spydies.

A search on the subject of "skirmish" will provide you with details of why many here are less than enamoured with Benchmade. It isn't the quality of their product.

Whether you choose to buy a Benchmade product, or not, is up to you. It's just not something I would presently choose to do. It certainly is not something you would be "shunned" for --- I promise

I am not a brand person. I like BM and I like Spyderco. I have the BM 630 and the BM 635 and both of these knives are as good as a production knife gets and even better than many customs. I do not believe Spyderco is better than BM or BM better than Spyderco. I do think however than Spyderco does not currently have a knife that can compete with the 630 or the 635. Not to say that they can't make one, they just aren't currently making one.

    Aloha anorexicpillow,

I used to have a buncha Benchmades. In fact, my *first* "Tactical Folder" was a Benchmade Tsunami. I had the Stryker, some Bali's...they were good knives. I traded or gave most of them away though, as my collection was growing !

Also, it should never matter what other's think regarding what YOU like. Do not *ever* do anything for fear of not being "accepted". Take Sal for example...he blew out a hole in a blade and threw a "pocket clip" onto a folding knife. Initially, the majority "shunned" these concepts. However, Sal persisted...and well, you know how that story ends!

Re-read first two sentences in the second paragraph again, and God bless

Chad, what you are saying is 100% true, but there is another side to this. A person is entitled to decide who they wish to do business with. Some, for example, will choose not to deal with companies that are anti-gun. Others will wish to avoid companies that abuse animals, or use child labor, or put profit above safety, or some other reason that is important to them.

In my case, I have chosen not to deal with Benchmade due to their lack of respect for the intellectual property of others. This may be more of a "hot button" issue for me than for some because, in the broadest sense, selling my IP is what puts food on my table and a roof over my head.

To me, letting people know there is an issue, whether it be political, moral, or ethical, and allowing them to decide whether or not it is significant enough to have an effect on their purchase decisions, is better than having them feel "dirty" later for doing business with a particular company.

BM and spyderco have different niches. Spyderco has better steel and stronger construction(Spyderco's handles and locks are simpler, thus making them more "murphy proof") while BM features stronger locks(axis) and better fit and finish (assuming we are talking about mid range knives). NO COMPANY CAN BE THE BEST AT EVERYTHING!

And for the record, my favorite of the 2 is spyderco.

And to keep things confusing, I don't agree with Lone Wolf: Benchmade's M-2 and D-2 easily rival anything Spyderco is using, and Spyderco's construction is IMO easily on par w/ Benchmade's (except at the lower end, where Spyderco's is definitely better!).

Two great companies, whose knives always have different strengths and weaknesses versus each other.

No, only handled one or two of Benchmade's latest round of lower-end knives. The Ascent series was an abomination that didn't remotely compare well with the delica/endura, but it sounds like the newer batch is better.

You probably pounded one of their knives through the side of an M-1 Abrams and they refused to replace it for you.
