    Clampacks?

    How does one know what is inside a clampack without opening it? I can't tell what steel is in the blade nor if it is serrated or non serrated? There are some numbers and letters on the clampack but I don't know how to read them as they seem to be a code of somekind.
    Here's the numbers and letters:
    C11PSBK98 no Boye Dent
    and
    C11PSBKCP with Boye Dent
    I think they are both serrated? And the first one is a 1998 model?

    Mine says C11PBKCP Someone correct me if needed.

    C11= Delica
    PB= Plain Blade, sub CE for combo edge, SE for serrated edge
    K= ?
    CP= Clam Pak

    C11= Delica
    P= Plain Blade, sub PS for combo edge, S for serrated edge
    BK= Black, YL= Yellow, OR=Orange
    CP= Clam Pack

    Dealers have the option of purchasing several of our models packaged in either boxes or clams. Those choosing clams usually display the knives outside a locked display case on peg boards. Our largest clam packaging customer is the US military.

    Thank you, Joyce. Both have the Combo Edge (PS). Both probably have different blade steel as one has the Boye dent and one does not. ATS-55? possibly? Or AUS-8?

    Would someone mind showing a picture of a "clampack"? I have never seen one and I don't know what you mean by them. I have gathered that they look like a clam and are some sort of packaging for the knife.

    Thanks,
    David

    Edit:
    I should have done a search. I found a pic of one in this thread:

    That was interesting. There are different clam packs as well as boxes. This is one I have. Picture is blurred, it came from the e-bay listing of my clam pack Delica.

    OMG, I can see it now, clam pack inserts, the NEXT Spyderco collectible to start showing up on eBay. Seriously Chad, hang onto that one, I probably will be worth something someday. Interesting to see, I had no idea had been using them that long, thought they were a more recent addition to the lineup.

    In collecting, packaging is very important. All packaging variations. Although with knives, and I only know Spyderco right now, with no manufacturing data (eg:SN's) on the product matched to the box or clam pack, you only hope the box that came with the knife is at least of that generation. Right now all you can do is be educated as to box style used and it's changes duing the evolution of the knife. I find packaging is part of the hobby and with knives, unless one was kept as a safe queen, most people throw throw the box away which makes them all the more rare. I expect to pay a premium for New In Box. For the same knife without the box I expect to pay 20 - 30 % less.

    Yeah...I think my 1st gen Dragonfly came in a CP with this "delica info", only the sticker with the model name, number, UPC code was changed...LOL, I was kinda tripping out when I found it though. Brought back a lot of memories...OBTW, your advice taken on hanging onto it.

    Seems like eveyone wants a knife that is "NIB". Most folks toss the box away first thing. My friend does this. He won't buy a knife without the box then can't wait to toss the box into the wastecan. Next everyone will want a knife that is "NIC".

    I wonder....

    ...If one opens, but retains the clam-pack, can one then advertise the knife as a on the half-shell when selling it?
