Drawer Dancers

I know many people have their “safe queens”, those knives that are bought more or less for the purpose of collecting, or the ones that have become so rare that you don’t dare using them in an effort to preserve them. Something along the lines of a 25th anniversary Delica, or maybe a Bob Lum Tanto, or a Dyad (just for you JD ).

Do any of you have what I like to call ‘drawer dancers’? This is the term I give knives that I have but have never used. They don’t necessarily have any collector value, it’s just that I moved onto something else before using them, or bought them for a purpose and never used them for that purpose.

Examples:

Centofante III
Bought it for a gentleman’s knife but have since come to think of my clip less gray Calypso Jr. as more ‘sheeple’ friendly.

Native FRN
Bought it because I wanted a knife made in Earth (S30V), but still can’t seem to put down the gray Caly Jr.

Browning Ice Storm 390 sx (I know its not a but this one creates a category none of my 's fall into.)
Brand-new and Probably won’t be used. I had one that needed repair so I sent it in. Today the mailman drops off a brand new one as replacement. Great knife but I really like the Caly Jr. so it probably won't see any use. Besides, it's not a .

Yup I have a "few". CRKT/Lightfoot Urban Shark small one/combo edge - thought it would be nice to have and use. Stopped at the "have" part.

Gerber/Carter Utility 1 - actually quite a nice one - just didn't feel right. I believe it was G-10 but sort of an air frame type. Feels nice in the hand, but just felt flimsy. Not that it is, but just enough, that I didn't ever put it in my pocket. Size is about the same as an FRN Endura, blade is a bit broader/AUS8 but just doesn't transmit the same "use me" as the Endura. I haven't used my Endura that much since I bought it, but it is part of my daily carry.

Kershaw Whirlwind - also a pretty nice piece, but not one that the blade shape actually fit for what I do.

Kershaw Vapor - it was nice, but just didn't do it for me. Closest to that one was the Camillus/Ralph EDC. That one saw a lot of pocket time, before I "moved on".

Buck 110/100th Anniversary - definitely a safe queen.

Schrade 60 XT - this one I carried for about two weeks - it was just big enough that I had to put it in my back pocket. I had the CRKT/Lightfoot M1 in the other pocket. For some reason, I just kept using the M1 instead.

Grohman Mini Skinner/Flat Grind - it's actually amazing that this one sits on the shelf - it's actually a great little knife, but I just don't use it. My Grohman #1, though, is used in the kitchen quite a lot.

I think I have somewhere between 60-70 folders (I've lost track since my last "buying round" ) and with the exception of the above, the rest do some use at some time of the year or another depending........ I do pick them up occasionally and "think" about using them, but just don't. Will I get rid of them - probably not.

One that's a little on the aside - I carry a Buck Metro all the time in a small slip case I made for it - you know what? I've never cut anything with it!! We won't go into how many beer bottles it's opened though

For me, perhaps it's just part of the evolution of collecting/acquiring. I started just "buying" because it was either new/neat/cool with the occasional one that I actually used. As I learned more, I started to be more discerning and started to get stuff that I actually use. Maybe it's a comfort feeling thing - when I pick my EDC's for the day/week - I know I have the stuff to get the job done right

I traded for a Manix and have yet to carry or use it. I got it to carry and use/abuse...oh well. It is comfy in its hard aluminum case Soon it will be its time!!!

I've been through 2 Whirlwinds. I've seen people give them bad marks but mine were as solid as anything I've had. They are partially responsible for my trip into Spyderland. After loosing the second one I started looking for something that would better grip my pocket. I thought the steel on the Whirlwind was great untill I tried VG-10.

The 2 Q's will remain drawer dancers. Then there are four fixed blades and four folders I haven't used yet and some I probably never will. Doesn't bother me in the least and won't stop me buying more either.

Here's a few others: CRKT Hissatsu...very nice knife, wanted one for a LONG time. CRKT Small First Strike: Ahhhh, it's just eye candy... CS Gunsite CE, Vaqueuro Grande, PE El Lobo, EKI Raven, etc...*sigh*...

ghostrider, though i personally don't have any safe queens (some get used more than others but all get their share) i couldn't keep quiet when i read you're not using your made in earth knife which is probably the best knife i own
i think i'll post about it in the main forum, meanwhile, use it! such an awesome knife!

Lots of them. Too many to list. I don't have a real "safe" so I keep them in a "real" drawer.

Except for a Ladybug and a Meerkat, all of mine are "safe queens", in a real safe, the only safe place to keep them. What I would like is a walk-in strongroom, done out like a small lounge, with all my valuables displayed openly. All it then needs is to lock up the door at night. (I can dream, can't I ?)

I am sure I will eventually use the Earth product, but I figure that as long as I am enjoying the aspects of VG-10, the "joys of Earth" can wait untill such a time that the distraction of VG-10 won't take away from "Earth's" pleasure.

I can only use one knife at a time and the current workhorse is a FRN Endura CE. The Caly Jr. gray accompanies it for times when around "sheeple" so as not to scare the natives .

I have a couple of Puma Universal multiblade stag hunters that I have socked away, I have an older version that has some wear on it that I tote occasionally.

I also have a beautiful Buck 110 stag and damascus folder that is buried away as well. The nicest stag that I've seen.
