Feeling guilty.....

I've been on these forums for quite a while now and I consider myself to be as crazy about Spyders as the next Knut. However, this past week found me in a crazy situation where I ordered a Benchmade 806D2. I got the urge for something new and the 806 seemed to fill that niche for me. After carrying a 530, that I got in a trade a week or two ago, I really got hooked on the AXIS lock.

The 806 is really a beast of a folder. Very similar to the Military, yet different. Due to my Millie's nested liner having to be replaced a couple of weeks ago, I really don't have the confidence in its' linerlock that I once had. It might sound crazy, but I still notice 'something' about it when it's engaged....but it might just be me.

Because of this, I've retired my Military from EDC.

With the AXIS, there is no doubt. I really do believe that this lock is one of the strongest out there, even more so than a framelock, IMHO. Where the Manix took the place of my Millie for EDC, I think that the 806 has taken the place of the Manix. I believe that the similarities between the Millie and AFCK are what have attracted me to this BM, because it's practically second nature for me to unpocket, open, cut, close and repocket.


I'm going to feel kind of weird walking around with a Spyderco Tshirt and a Benchmade in my pocket. The Military and Manix will still continue being my favorite Spydies, but for now, the 806 will be riding in my pocket. (Although, I still do carry a Spydie somewhere on my person, as well. )

I know it's a weird thread, but it's just something that's been on my mind.

While I admit my love of Spyderco is all-encompassing, I do own a few knives from other manufacturers, and I carry them from time to time. Why?

1) Wenger Swiss Army Knife - Spyderco does not currently manufacture a multi-function knife such as this one

2) Cold Steel Arc-Angel - Spyderco does not currently manufacture a Ti-handled balisong

3) Cold Steel Ti-Lite - Spyderco does not currently manufacture a stiletto

I will probably always collect and use Spyderco knives as the core of my knife collection, but there will as likely always be other brands in the collection as well, even for EDC (like my Wenger Swiss Army). Primary EDC will *always* be the Harpy, as I have a strange attachment to that particular model.

Variety *is* the spice of life, and I find that every new non-Spyderco blade I obtain seems to fuel a desire to obtain another Spyderco. I am always looking for something new, something different.

Benchmade has some good knives, don't be ashamed or guilty of carrying one. the only problem with them is that sometimes they forget who patented what... that's all

anyway you got to have at least one spydie on you each and every day, so get a little to complete your EDC and you're absolved of your sins

Hannibal, thanks for the reply and I'm glad to see that I'm not alone in this.

Senate, I'm not sure on the Hole patent for the AFCK. I seem to remember something about Benchmade getting the ok from Sal for the 806, but not for the Skirmish. Don't quote me on that though. Maybe I'll find out the answer in the Spyderco Story.

Don't feel guilty my friend. I have a great affection for Benchmade, as it was those that started me off on Spyderco!!!

I still have an original mini AFCK, a CQC7, Leopard Cub, Panther, mini Stryker, 690 and a 100R&R, my only fixed blade.

To me though, they just don't seem to "fit" as well as the Spydie!!

I am carrying a Benchmade Elishewitz 690 (beautiful wood/carbon handle).....but hope to retire it with a Lil' Temperance.

Variety is indeed important. At work I carry 3! My Spyderco Kiwi, the benchmade and an old James Barber penknife, which was my Father's.

Although i'll always carry the Barber, i hope to change to just the Lil'

I have also just TODAY ordered another Benchmade, a 940 Ti .....it's not for EDC....But, i haven't got it, yet

Dude, it's not just you. I am an AXIS freak! I have never hidden the fact that I think the AXIS is the best lock out there, bar none. I EDC both Spyders and BM's. Actually, I have a 940 in my pocket right now. It ain't cheatin' it's diversification! Enjoy all your quality blades. After all, you can't get a better fixed blade than Falkniven, but for a small blade, NOTHING BEATS A SPYDERCO! And the compression lock is ALMOST there - better detente and we've got a contender against the AXIS.

Thank God! I'm not alone in the Benchmade guilt department! I have always admired BM's as my brother loves them as much as I love 's. I was ready to buy a Yojimbo until he showed me his current BM catalog and my eyes fell on the Gravitator (425, Snody) . Now all my knife monies are in a locked box awaiting it's arrival date. I feel like I'm cheating on my first love ......I promise this is the last non I'm going to buy .

Alright, I'll 'fess up too,

I have a 940 CFD2 that I love - the Axis lock and reversible clip are great for lefties. The smooth carbon fiber and somewhat loose clip means that it is very easy to retrieve and replace (although the downside is that it's probably much easier to inadvertantly lose from the pocket). I also have a 705-04Bt that is one slick little piece. IMHO its handle is a little thick and chunky for the size of the knife. Speaking of thick and chunky, you should see my Extrema Ratio Fulcrum IID. The first time that I carried that baby I thought "holy s##t, I've got a brick in my pocket!"

I have a 975 Sentinel and 750 Pinnacle and they are both great knives. IMHO the best BM ever put out. I do like the axis lock but my Bro really liked my Osbourne 940 and I gave that to him for helping me move so no more axis lock. To each their own. I have been carrying a Strider AR with my Spydies lately Take Care!!!

I got a woodie Sebenza a few weeks ago and I have fell in love with it.It is the sweetest knife I have ever owned.

Hiya' Allen...long time no see!! I'm not exactly sure what a CHICOM Spydie is, but as far as knockoffs go, you won't ever find one of those on me. The AFCK does come with a comboedge, but I opted for the plainedge.....easier to take care of "out in the field'.

I agree that Spyderco should come out with something similar to, but not exactly like, the AXIS, Arc lock, etc.. The Compression Lock on my Yojimbo is cool, but a little harder to disengage until you get used to it.

Jeff, that Sebbie is one beautiful knife! I hope to, one of these days, at least to get just a regular Sebenza. I've been itching for one but man, the price tag is quite high for a married guy with four kids!

Same with me,for the SNG I have to sell a few to get it.
Keep an eye out on the forums,someone on USN had a small Sebie for 240.00 a while back.I got the Woodie at an unbelivablely good price and traded a plain Classic even for a Web Site graphic.

Variety is the spice of life, so there's no need to feel guilty. I think everyone here has other knives than (Sal Glesser included) and are perfectly happy with them.
Besides, Benchmade makes some great knives, so why reject a good knife if it seems to fit you?
