    Smells like the Oscars

I've been meaning to post this a few days ago but life's so unpredictable

It's that time of the year again, folks! The Oscars are around the corner, which is always exciting for the film student I am!

Overall, I think 'Million dollar baby" will sweep most of the big trophees (best picture, best male actor, best female actor). Certainly not the best film I have ever seen, but the same applies for the Lord of the Ring....and you know...Clint Eastwood deserves it, not for this movie alone but for his entire career. It's pretty good when you think he was slowly recovering from "Space Cowboys" lol. There is a slight chance that Jamie Foxx will get credit for his supporting role in Collateral. There's also a chance for "Eternal sunshine..." in original screenplay

My vote for best foreign language(remember last year Quebec one with Arcand's Barbarian invasions!) will be Mar anderto. I pray to God "Super-size me" won't win for best documentary and guys, check out "Ryan", nominated for best animated short. It's about Ryan Larkins, one of Quebec's most creative filmmaker who fought a drug addiction all his life and is now begging for money in from of Schwartz on Sherbrooke. You don't have to like Larkin's work to appreciate this wonderful documentary.

Agrre/disagree with my picks? Feel free to bring you opinion to the discussion!

    My 2005 Oscar Pics!!!!

Well being sick a lot in the last little while I have not been able to go out to see any of these. Althought I am a huge Scorsese buff, I am not the slightest bit interested in The Aviator. But I think it is going to do very well at the Oscars this year. Here are my Pics for the Biggies:

Best Actor>>>>>Leo is going to take it. Don Cheadle and Johnny Depp don't stand a chance unfortunately. It is between Clint, Jamie and Leo. My pic is Leo.

Best Supporting Actor>>>>>>Morgan Freeman, no one else stands a chance. Sorry...have heard all the buzz about colateral but come on Foxx against Freeman...

Best Actress>>> Hilary Swank...only competion is Annette Bening and Swank will take it.

Best Supporting Actress>>>> Cate Blanchett, I have heard her performance was great so that is my pic

Animated>>>>>Tough call Shrek II or The Incredibles but I think the Incredibles takes it for all the new technology they came up with to film it.

Best Picture>>>>> I have a feeling Ray might take it. Neverland and Sideways won't stand a chance. MDB or the Aviator are the likely two but you never know...I have a feeling that will be their way of remembering Ray and give it to well Ray.

Director>>>>Tough, Scorsese or Eastwood...I say Scorsese. Nope changed my mind Eastwood will take it for sure!!!!!

I won't get into all the other categories. I look forward to watching them on Feb 27. Overall I think the Aviator and Million Dollar Baby are going to take most of everything. Take Care!!!!

I really hope Scorsese makes it too but I don't think he will. He's had a brilliant filmmaking career and no Oscar under his belt yet. I really though that 2 years ago he would have one with Gangs of New York (that I didn't like all that much) but not only did he not win, he has the record of the most nomination in one year and no trophee. Must be hard to take. He deserved it so much for Raging Bull, I can't believe he would win with The Aviator. And by the way, I think Leo doesn't stand a chance in hell. Well at least, I think it's more likely that Jamie Foxx wins supporting that Leo for lead. I know he's not Pacino but I thought he did a good job with Collateral. It's been a good year for him.

I agree on Swank for female lead and Cate Blanchett has a good chance too. I'm confident Best picture will be Million Dollar Baby though. After all, don't forget the first unofficial Oscar rule: There has to be one clear winner so they can make money off of it.

I forgot animated feature-lenght. I agree, tough choice between Shrek and the Incredible. Haven't seen the incredible. Did they really come up with new special effects? If they did, they have a good chance. We'll see for this one.

I really really enjoy my program. It's the only thing I was ever good at, or showed any interest for(except knives of course). It is sometime rough to see some of the films they present. Just last week, in my "Experimental Film" class, we watched something called wave-lenght, a 45 minutes zoom-in on a picture across the room. That was boring like you wouldn't believe. But sometimes, we watch something like Appocalypse Now on a georgous 35mm print, on a cinema screen and sound, that was a real treat. I wasn't born in 1979 when it was released so it's great to see it in a theatre. Film studies is definitly not for everyone but it sure is something I like!

To me Leo is Hollywoods little golden boy. He gets anything he wants. He has worked with Scorsese twice now and he does a not bad job. Not my fav actor but I loved him is Gangs. Mind you I loved Gangs to but for Daniel Day Lewis' role. He owned that film.
Jamie Foxx has had an amazing career this year but I think he is still green and they will not reward him for that. Possibly for Collateral, but for sure not Ray. Being up against Freeman though...tough call.
You could say what they were saying two years ago(I think) about the "black actors" year. With Berry and Washington winning. Denzel earned that for Training Day...great flick. So I think that is why Scorsese will get best Director it is his time. Too bad for something like the Aviator and not Raging Bull..hell Mean Streets for that matter
I heard there was contoversy about a hidden agenda behind MDB..something about the secondary plot? Not sure as I have not seen it. But The Aviator is just such an American story(my intent is not to offend with that statement) that I am sure it will win over MDB. I would rather Clint and Crew win but my pic never gets it so that is why I am devils advocating this one. Man I wanted Crouching Tiger to win years ago but it never happened.
I watched a special on the Incredibles one night and it said they had to develope some new animation method to get the really fast paced shots or something along those lines. Thats why I think Incredibles will take it over Shrek II. Shrek is such a franchise though it will be hard to say.
Wow, I haven't had a good movie/film discussion in a long time. Take Care!!!!

It's been a while I had a good conversation myself
Scorsese is great, don't get me wrong. I just re-visited "king of comedy" recently and he is just mind-blowing.
I think Eastwood is one of those great icons of american cinema...and he also deserves this award. Scorsese will probably win for something less mainstream. The SAG awards will give us a good indicator.
as for Leo...time will tell, you've got good points.

how about best music? Do you think Ray has a chance? Would be a good way to honor him, don't you think?

Sorry bro, didn't get that. Probably too subtle a joke for my french speaking brain.

I'm just back from school and one of my teacher described how bad The Aviator was before she said that it was going to sweep the Oscar night....hummm...interesting
It's you and my teacher against my own picks. May the best man win!

I was referring to the title of this thread. No personal insult intended. I just find most award shows relatively irrelevant. Just a rung above infomercials. Of course, I don't get out to movies much anymore. Now I wait for them to come out on DVD, then I wait for the price to drop. At $9 per ticket plus a sitter for $12 an hour times 3-4 hours and if I take my wife out to eat too, another $50 or so. It adds up fast. I would much rather just take my wife out so we can talk to each other without interruption and buy the DVD and a !

    Talking disappointed

Well Jimmy Dean I guess it has been quite a while now since you won your Oscar in "EAST OF EDEN". The one that you and Liz did should have got one for sure. I quit keeping up with the Oscars about 4 years ago. I was so heartbroken, downtrodden and disappointed when the "Bride OF ChuckY" didn't even win one. Not EVen one!!! It should swept don't you think?

No offense taken spyderknut. Actually, I'm the first one to say the Oscars are self-serving and they often award they person that didn't deserve it the most for different reasons. The "black Oscars" CKE pointed out is a good example of that. Did Washington deserve it more for Training Day than for Hurricane, did Berry deserve one at all? But still, I like celebrities, I like to see them outside a character, and I'm excited when someone receives a well-deserved award. It's like the superbowl for the film industry They also have a great moment for those who passes away and I hope they do something for Brando. This alone would make it all worthwhile.

Hey JD, I knew you had to jump in here at some point, pal! James Dean (or myself depending on how you look at it) is part of the handful (5 I think) of actors nominated for best actor at their screen debut. But he never won. He was also nominated after his death for Giant(super super rare) but that didn't happen either.

I'm reading left and right about the Oscars and I'm starting to think Jamie Foxx will win for leading man....that would be unexpected!

    Take care
    -Dean

Tonight is the night Some family are coming over and I am cooking lobster, crab, shrimp and some other fillers(potatoes, salad) Mrs CKE is making her famous creme brulee. Ah, so good to be able to eat soft foods now. The crab is going to be good. Anything drenched in butter has got to slide down easy.
Start the evening with a game of Scene It(I highly recommend this DVD game) and then on to watch the Oscars. Take Care and hopefully I get some of my pics right this year!!!!!!!!!

well there it is. I didn't get them all but I still did pretty good after all
Thank God Jamie Foxx won!!! He deserved it so much for Ray. Charlie Kaufmann too for his entire career. Ryan won!!(another canadian Oscar!), Million Dollar baby for directing, best picture, best female lead(best supporting male too but I didn't pick that one). All in all, I'm very pleased!

Supersize me didn't win, neither did DiCaprio and I'm cool with that...but Scorsese!!! What is it going to take for him to take a trophee home?!? Still, The aviator did better than I had expected and after the first half, it felt to me that it was going to be this year's winner, but I think we can say it was MDB.

My biggest surprise is best song with "al otro lado del rio". First, it's the first nomination of a spanish song and I think it deserved it, Banderas and Carlos Santana played it very well and I'm very happy for them. My vote was for the phantom of the opera.

Many believed Chris Rock would be the worst host of Oscar history and while I don't think he'll be invited back next year, he did a decent job. he deserves some credit.

well, there you have a brief overview of the evening for those who didn't watch. I had a super great time, as expected. Almost shed a tear with the "in memorium" and the Brando part. I'm a big fan. Let's not forget Tony Randall, Rodney Dangerfield, Ronald Regan, Christopher Reeves, Johnny Carson, Janet Leigh and others who past away this year, who's name I can't remember at the moment.

    Take care everybody
    -Dean

Edit to add: Salma Hayek was as hot as humanly possible!!!!

Fay Wray was another classic who passed away. Brando for sure is a great loss.
Well, out of my seven pics I got 5 right. That is the best I have done yet for pics. Jamie Foxx deserved best actor but I did not think he would beat out Leo or Clint for some reason.
Scorsese is just a sour point for me...he has such a scope of work and still nothing. The Powers that be had better get their act together.
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind is supposed to be very good and lots of buzz has made me interested...I am going to have to rent this one.
I missed the first hour but what I saw was very good. Hope all who watched enjoyed it as well. Take Care!!!!

I didn't saw all the movies nominated yet and didn't watch the show but I expect to be blown by the big winner, Million Dollar thing... I hope it worth it. Even if I'm happy for Mr Eastwood because he's such a legend I'm still amazed: when are they going to honor Scorcese? when he's 6 feet under?

Well Senate, I bought the special edition of Raging Bull a couple of weeks ago and in the special features, Scorsese himself and some of his collegue believe he is not "Oscar material" to quote one of them. He'll probably have a career award when he's 80, as a pat on the shoulder saying "you've been a good buy" but no "real" Oscars. It's a shame but people who care know he deserves one.

To quote on of my teacher, Million Dollar Baby is the most predictable movie on the planet but still enjoyable. Hope you like it

2 years ago I really thought he was going to get it with Gangs of New-York and Daniel Day-Lewis for his impressive performance of Bill the Butcher. but as always Oscars aren't for violent movies or evil characters even brillantly interpreted... so they preferred Chicago... how blind can they be?
