What kind of folder, FB, or Multi-tool?

    Aloha ALL!

Mahalo for reading, and I hope you guys have been okay. Anyway...

I was just wondering what kind of Multi-tool, folder, or FB you'd put into a first aid kit? See, I have a first aid kit in my car, but nothing it to "cut with"...
I was leaning more toward a multi-tool w/ scissors and saw...BUT...what do you all think and why?

    God bless!

    Lightbulb Multitool

    Daywalker,

I carry a Gerber multitool in mine, for numerous reasons.

Whether the first aid kit is on your person (backpacking, etc.) or in your vehicle, it seems the most reasonable solution as a catch-all tool. Knife, saw, pliers, can opener, etc. I have several such tools, and keep one in each vehicle in the first aid kit, as well as in my backpacking/hiking kit.

I think you are definitely on the right track.

    Just my $0.02...

    Mahalo hannibal!

yeah, I figured with a good multi-tool and my RTAK, I am kinda covered...
But being an open minded individual , I wanted to get some other views too, as I may have "missed something"!

    God bless for your .02!!!

    Hi!

I'd say that one of the rescue/assist knives must obviously be considered for a first aid kit. Even better, within reach of the driver's seat in the car.
Assist with glass breaker fits the bill. (reminds me, I want one, too )

For a Multitool I recommend the Victorinox Swisstool. I have the old one and like it a lot, but the new one is fine, too. Would I put it in a 1st aid kit?
Depends where you are going. For most situations it would probably be overkill as we're never far from professional rescue but alone in the wilderness the situation changes...

There are no fixed blades that come to mind for a 1st aid kit. I'd always take a folder to make the kit small and light.

    Good thread!

    Mahalo Silverback!

Yeah, but "Help" can sometimes be a bit too far when the situation calls for them. Where I live, only ONE place has an ambulance "service", the rest of the time, it's the firefighter's who gotta keep ya breathin' until the ambulance comes!!!
I just wanna have "something" in my car kit...I was even thinking a Leatherman Crunch...maybe the vise grip ability has some merit? This will not leave the car, so weight is not really an issue...

I saw a neat window breaker/belt cutter that attaches to your keychain at rangerjoe.com...I need to get a few!

Thanks for your input! God bless!

I have a FB knife in the glove compartment. It has a broad blade, with serrations on the spine and the sheath has all sort of thingies - from compass to magnifying glass, grit stone, matches, fishing string with hooks and lead balls, a piece of cable with two rings, even a whistle - the usual stuff you find in a regular survival knife - except that this knife, as I said, has a simple zytel handles and the sheath carries all these things.

    Arrow Victorinox Swiss Tool

The Victorinox Swiss Tool is in my opinion the very best multi-tool of it's type. I also have their newer model as well called the Swiss Tool X. They are both with me either at work or at home. I am not taking away anything from the Spyderench at all. It's just the Swiss Tool is in a class all of it's own.

Wink Leatherman Crunch An Interesting Idea

You may be on to something here.

I keep debating ordering one, as I have handled them before and they are very sturdy little tools. There are times that while a vice grip may not be essential, it is certainly very handy.

I use what I have lying around. If you are ordering one, the Crunch has much to recommend it.

In the kit itself put a Leatherman Micra - you'll need that to cut bandages (scissors), pull out splinter and stingers (blade, tweezers), and you'll have a handy set of small screwdrivers.

In the car put a Leatherman Wave - blades and saws, screwdrivers and can openers. All you'll ever need. Even use it to crimp and cut wires in harnesses, etc...

Keep in mind that I have a full toolbox in the vehicle for repairs. The multitools are just for personal use, no hardcore use.

have a cheap multi in my bob in the trunk, "full" set of tools underneath the bag(sockets/ratchet, wrenches, screwdrivers), BM5W in the glove box

my "everywhere" bag(goes everywhere with me, unless I'm only stopping in for about 5min) has my CE Millie, fb01 moran in kydex, and tichbourne neck knife in kydex, along with the doublestuff and eraser.

edit: you'll love the crunch. I love mine, lives on my belt, weight isn't a problem.

    Daywalker

I think with a multi and the RTAK you have things covered. I would also add a flashlight if you don't have that already too. The multi can take care of lots and most have a serrated and plain edge blade on them now. Say a Charge xTI or Wave. I have a Gerber but the Leathermans are nicer...I think. The RTAK is going to take care of anything big.
Crunch might come in handy not sure for what though????

    Aloha ALL!

AHHhhhhh how my brethren ALWAYS comes through!!! Thanks guys!!! Okay let's see who I must reply to here...

Alexandru the Great: Is that one in your glove box the one we both have? LOL! I hope not!

JDSpydo: Yeah, I was looking into the Swiss Tool at one point. May look into it again. Ball's in your court my friend!

Hannibal: Hey man!!! Yeah, even something like the Schrade Tool with the vise grip feature would be good...thanks again!

RLR: Mahalo for replying. Yes, Micra came to mind as I carry one i my fannybag to work. If I charged everytime i tightened an inmates eyeglasses with those, I wouldn't be rich, but I'd be fat! LOL! A simple gesture like that can cost a bag of Oreo's!!!

Pat: Hey bro, thanks for the "edit". As for the weight thing, ahhhh, no prob as it'll stay in the kit. E me man, when ya got time and no caffeine induced headaches!

Craig: My other Canadian Brother...feels good to not just "beat", but to "defeat", eh?! We're STILL in your corner man, and prayer is a poweful weapon!!! Anyway,I think the vise grip ability on a multi could help like, I dunno, let's say something under the hood goes kookoo. Maybe clamp it together so you can make it home eh? Thanks for your input and inspiration bro...OBTW, have you had RTAK experience? WooHaaaa!!!!

DEACON: Although not posted here, thank you for your input and experiences also!!!

Mahalo much guys, and God bless!

Chad...yea, I guess in a crunch the Crunch would come in handy. Man did I just type that
No RTAK experience yet but I have been eyeing the TAK for over a year now but have not bit the bullet and got one yet.

for a car first aid kit i think i have to recommend the gerber legend simply because it has tungsten cutters that can cut through any steel wire in case of emergency & a metal saw, should you, god forbid, have to saw parts of the car to reach someone.. other than that, it has anything else you might need.

    Aloha i.v!!!

Thanks for digging this thread back up. I agree about the cutter/saw features on them Gerbers. I have seen however, a Shrade multi-tool with that vice-grip feature. They're only like, 10$US at eknifeworks...

I was thinking that I already have a pocket wood/metal saw in the First Aid kit, no wire cutters though...hmmmmm...Figure if I get my hands on the assist with the window breaker feature, I'd be covered! (Well, knife-wise anyway! LOL!)

i never did understand those glass breakers
in a real emergency a lot of things can be used for breaking windows, i can use my arms & legs (have used before), it is a little painful (but heck, if it's for saving life who cares about a little pain), & even those that can't, any pair of pliers on a multi tool can do the trick i think, & to be honest, as much as it would hurt me later, i wouldn't mind jabbing the tip of a stong knife (say the native) through a window if it'll help save my life or someone elses.

but then again, i have never used those glass breakers & maybe the work like magic... do they?

    Aloha i.v!!!

Yeah, they work well...let me just say, that I once saw my big friend wrap his hand in his shirt and hold a Balisong in it to try to break his window to get the keys that were locked in it!

FULL power, glass didn't break. I egged him on by saying he needed to "focus his power" more!!! LOL! Boy was he getting pissed off! Anyway, the end result was a rock through the window...

I saw a demo of one of these spring loaded types of carbide glass breakers. Man do they work, and like a charm!!! I have heard tha sometimes it takes more than one "hit", but when the window breaks, it BREAKS!!!

    God bless

    Hello Chad!

There are two pairs of clamp forceps (in case or arterial bleeds) and some scissors in my first aid kit. You might think the forceps are a bit extreme but I saw a young girl die after cutting her femoral artery. She had fallen through a green house window and no amount of direct pressure would stop the bleeding.

I have a Leatherman Micra on my key ring which I carry always and a UK Penknife in my front right pocket of my jeans. For longer trips I include a Leatherman Wave and a Perrin FB.

So far they have managed every task I've needed them for.

    Cheers, Ken
