Don't forget that every time you tie a knot in cord it reduces the strength by a certain percent. ie a bowline reduces strength by 30% or so. Here is a list of relative strengths of knots.

Welcome to the Spyderco Forum.

As ghostrider mentioned, the (first) knots have to be tied close enough to the handle to keep the fob from looping over the tip of the blade and interfering with the opening (or being cut on closing). Having the knot tied close also keeps the fob in place. The fob can serve a dual purpose, both providing something to grip to remove the knife from the pocket and also effectively extending the length of the handle.

I'll be going to an Eastern Mountain Sports soon, so I'll pick up some of the Sterling accessory cord. When I do, I'll have to remember to tie the first knot real close and tight to the handle.

I only started back in March, but haven't really done anything recently untill now. I started with the "Monkey's Fist", took me a few hours to learn how to tighten the knot gradually. The link to the "diamond knot" on british blades makes it pretty easy after that. I think a key part is learning how to "gradually" tighten the knot, and patience.

I'm gonna check it out...thanks ghostrider...I may buy shoes with ties yet! ;) ...Doc :D

I make paracord lanyards in my free time. I put the lanyards on keychains, but they fit nicely on Spydercos as well. I have them on my Endura, Navigator, Salsa, SPOTs and Dragonfly.

I notice that it looks like a Thompson Cigar Co. humidor underneath your Endura.I used to order from Thompson. I'm poor, so I smoked thier seconds that they told me were made using Arturo Fuente (sp?) tobacco. While the construction wasn’t the greatest (although I’ve smoked much worse), the flavor was very good. Probably one of the best inexpensive cigars you can buy.

Yep, Thompson has their own brand which is considerably less expensive than a lot of the name brands they carry and they smoke just as well IMO. I just cleaned out the humidor and sent the 40+ cigars I had in there to some soldiers over in Afghanistan thru the Anysoldier.com website. I've also sent some things to soldiers in Iraq, mostly magazines, snacks, and toiletries, all of which are in short supply to the underpaid, underappreciated men and women in uniform. I tend to smoke Jewels Sweet cigars most of the time since they're cheap, but everyone says they smell great.

That's a very nice way to support the troops.

I just noticed the number of viewings on this thread. Over 1k, and only 55 posts. Great thread. I normally only use the one fob on my Caly Jr. but they sure are fun to tie, and look at.

Those are really cool Fob/ lanyard thingy's, and pic's too, totally appreciate.

Had a guy visit our stand at an outdoor show a while back, was carrying another brand of knife (make not important...) and had a lanyard on it. Tied quite close to the hole, then a loop and finished in a bigger knot. Put his hand through the loop and used the lanyard to pull the knife from his pocket and the momentum to open the blade, with the knife kinda swinging into his hand in the open position. Except for the obvious use of not losing the knife in water etc., this is the first time I ever saw anything like that.

Very nice lanyards indeed! I am curious where you obtained those skull-type beads that you used to top them off. I don't suppose you'd like to share that information with us ;) ?
