You're not the only one. It doesn't make sense. It makes the screws/clip stand out even more than it should.

While I do agree on the black hardware after seeing the actual knife and how much the wood differs from above, it does look better.

Seeing how it looks from 3rd parties, I WANT ONE SO BADLY. Hopefully these are still available when my monetary situation rectifies itself. Though, the price is a hard pill to swallow for S30v.

I can't stand it, but i'm thinking about buying one and having brass pins put in there instead, and at least using a matching screw for the pivot. Otherwise i love it...i'm not thrilled about where they decided to split the Ti/wood, but i do love that wood grain and i love Ti so it's a winner IMO. Down the road there's a good chance if enough of us complain they'll change the screw color (it happened on the DLC Para 2).

After seeing this knife in person, it doesn't even look like the same species of wood as what is pictured above (and in the catalog). I like the actual wood much better, but it's odd to me that the official picture is so far off. The picture looks more like a burled maple than desert ironwood. Oh well. The actual knife looks great - I just wonder how many people are put off by the picture.

All natural materials vary a lot, and ironwood varies more than many. It's just ordinary "woodiness." :)

The prototype photo is something like maple. production is with Desert Ironwood. the owner photo above is a typical ironwood look.
It's called ironwood for a reason by the way..

Am sure they're all Arizona Ironwood. Some woods are quite consistent in both color and grain, some vary greatly in one, the other, or both. Arizona Ironwood is one of the more variable ones.

I'm considering a Sage4. It's pretty expensive though. If they lower the price by $2 I'd definately get one, but I can't afford it at the prices I've seen. :)
When I first saw the Sage4 picture I hated it. I mean the picture in the printed catalog and the Adobe version. The picture on the on-line catalog looks like the pictures above and I love that. Thank god they changed it.

Once again this forum gets the credit for another sale. The first picture of the Sage4 was unlikable IMO. If the knife looked like that picture I wouldn't have gotten it unless I wanted to collect all the Sage's. It's not like I didn't think it was pretty. It seemed a little on the ugly side to me. The picture is still out there in the printed catalog possibly turning people off. That is just my opinion of course. Then here comes this thread with pictures of the final production. MAN, what a difference. Beautiful knife. I haven't seen it mentioned but I'm thinking the wood will make it easy on a pocket. That means it shouldn't ruin a pair of nice slacks. The knife is beautiful enough to carry with any attire even though it may be a little big for a gentleman's knife. Not an issue for me since I can't remember the last time I was called a gentleman. :D

I agree. I would have bought one as picture just to add to the collection, but real world; this knife is a winner. I am not sure why they listed these pics that are nothing like actual production.
I am getting ready to pull the trigger because of you. I shouldn't as 1 is enough, but ea knife is unique and no 2 are alike. I am a sucker for wood, especially wood like this.
While I absolutely love the sage 2, this one doesn't really do it for me...
Everyones entitled to their opinions, but I really think your missing out. The only thing I dislike is the back lock. i would have rather this one with a different lock, but I still love it. I am not a big fan of back locks but seems most of my knives are back locks, just because I am not going to let a lock hold me back from a good knife.
I currently have the Sage 1, 2, 4. Will eventually get the 3, but not today.

So perhaps it was just bad luck that the first sample of the Sage IV the folks in Taichung delivered to Spyderco had non-typical wood.

Yea! Got my Sage4 in the mail today. It is just what I expected. The Sage feel and beautiful as well. There is no blade play at all but the pivot is a little tight. I'll loosen it up after I use it and get it broken in a little. I'm glad I came acrosss the "hot deal" at Howe's. THat's how the knife is listed. If it wasn't for that I would have waited. Howe's did like everyone says. Right on top of shipping.
Looking inside around the pivot I believe the Sage4 has a lock design like the Chaparral. I never heard about that (if I'm right). Does anyone know for sure? Please answer this question so I don't have to take it apart. :) Just kidding, I won't do that for a while. BTW, has anyone taken theirs apart? I'm wondering how the bolsters will make it different from a lockback with solid scales.

I was wondering this too as you can see a circular notch cut out of the liners around the pivot. I'm not about to take mine apart to find out though.

I've never owned anything titanium before. Is there anything I need to know about how to take care of it? Will it develop a patina? Any help is appreciated.
I do like the Sage4. It has more heft that the Sage1. It is the same width and feels the same unless you want to consider the cutout for the liner lock on the S1. Very solid lockup.

With other titanium things I have (watches, flashlight, etc), they get scratched up quite easily but I think it adds character. I've never seen anything like a patina, it's just like stainless steel but less shiny and it's lighter. It won't rust in salt-water either. Titanium is a very cool metal:

Another great thing about the Sage4 IMO. The Chaparral had the gritty issue and I wondered if it was because of the stop-pin scraping against the liners. If it was, it seems to have been figured out and corrected. My sage4 is very smooth and quiet until it clicks shut and locked. What a great knife.
Jack
PS edit: The grittyness of the Chaparral worked it's way out of my knife. Now it opens perfectly.

I realized today that the Boye Dent isn't on the lock bar of the Sage4. I'm glad it isn't there on this knife. The lock bar spring is stronger than any other lock back I've used. You really have to push down on the lock bar and maybe not having the dent is better in this case. How does anyone else feel about this? Is everyone's Sage4 spring extra strong?

You're not the only one. It doesn't make sense. It makes the screws/clip stand out even more than it should.
I hadn't thought about the screws. It boils down to do you want the screws hidded or used as part of the appearance. On this knife the screw on the bolster and pivot screw would need to be silver and leave the screws on the scales alone. That would make them blend in to the knife more without drawing attention to themselves. I'm looking at mine and like the way the black screws stand out on the bolster. But, I have no imagination. I can't accurately picture the knife with silver screws unless I'm looking at it. Most products that are meant to be beautiful have the screws, nails, etc. hidden. Like furniture. Screws are covered with wooden plugs, putty then stained, etc. So, even though this isn't a deal breaker for me at all, it is something to consider and I'm sure Spyderco considered it then made a decision.
I wonder. Is there somewhere you can get replacement screws of different material or color with the same specs as the ones in Spyderco knives? Are the screws made special for each knife or are the knives make to match already in production screws? I imagine it's the second option. The main problem would be the length of replacement screws. With care you can cut bolts without messing up the threads where it is cut. I've never had to cut a bolt as short as these though.

I like the black hardware, especially the black clip like the Sage1. Wearing jeans it was never a problem with my Sages until I went to a funeral and wore dress pants and all the silver clips stood out like a sore thumb. The black screws disappear into the wood and the screws in the bolsters are a nice contrast to the titanium.

I'm wondering why the stop pin in the Sage4 and Chaparral haven't been advertised more. It isn't even mentioned in the description of the knives in the catalogs. This is a pretty significant upgrade I think. Then again I may not even know the real purpose for it. I think it is to stop vertical play and make the knife or lock stronger but I may be way off.

No, it's not a normal production knife. They only made 247 of them and they are all sold. Sorry. :) Just kidding. Yes, I believe they will be around like the other Sages. It's not a sprint run, dlr exclusive or anything. One thing that it is though is a very nice knife IMO. I really like mine and think you should get one if you haven't yet. Sage4 lock spring strength.
Had the knife 2 weeks now. It has gotten much easier to release the lock with out causing undo stress on my thumb. At first I had to use what felt like a lot of strength to push the bar down far enough for the blade to just fall on it's own. Now I can do that every time without feeling any excessive force is needed. It's still stronger than any other lock back I have but not uncomfortable to use. It's not entirely that my right hand thumb has gotten stronger because I tried using my left hand which I never use and it's the same story. Much easier. That's only one reason I'm liking this knife more and more every day. All I have carried since I got the Sage4 is it and my Jester/flashlight combo.
I posted this for anyone who gets a Sage4 new and is worried about the strong lock being a pain to use for the rest of their life. It gets better so wait a couple of weeks before you get frustrated and mail me your brand new Sage4 for free. :)

That's good to know. I noticed that this isn't the normal mid lock and the description says that it is a "Front Lock" so the release button is up further than what I'm used to. That should mean that you won't get the same mechanical advantage on the spring as the mid lock.
Thanks for commenting on this, Jack.

I'm terrible at picturing things other than what I'm looking at so it's hard for me to say I would like it with silver screws even though I'm sure they would look good. Even so, I like the black screws. They blend in nicely with the wood and are an attractive contrast with the titanium. I'm still carrying the knife without interruption. The new is gone but I still like the knife just as much. The Sage4 HAS moved ahead of the Sage1 in my preference. Sorry Sage1. :( We can still be friends though. :D

Got the Sage4 23 days ago and have carried it since. I have no intention of putting anything else in my pocket instead of the Sage4 any time soon. I may carry one or two other knives also, but the Sage4 seems to be a keeper. Until something else comes along the Sage4 is definately a favorite along with a Gayle Bradley, Chaparral and Sage1 and a couple of close runner ups. I hope to add the ti Chaparral in a few months.

I'm not complaining but my Sage4 developed a tiny amount of vertical blade play yesterday. It is very slight but noticable. I don't consider this a problem at all. A knife not being "perfect" of course is somewhat of a downer but I've never had a problem with vertical blade play with back lock knives and this is not the first knife I've seen with it. Back locks having vertical blade play is almost normal for the lock. I only mention it because this model has the stop pin mod. I thought Spyderco would want to know how the knives are doing in the field and want to hear from the users. I'd like to know as well if anyone else is seeing vertical blade play. I never had a problem with it because after the blade is pushed up by force applied to the edge any back lock knife is just as strong as any back lock with no blade play. I haven't used the knive in any cutting that is terribly hard. The hardest thing the knife has gone through as far as the lock/pivot is concerned is me flicking the blade open instead of just opening it. I've heard people advising against this and I'll stop. I only do it for fun and don't consider it a good way to open a knife. Never thought it would do any harm though and not sure flicking the knife open cause this issue. I've done it with about any knife I own (except my bug :)).
I'm not planning on sending this knife to Spyderco for a warranty evaluation unless they ask me to so they can evaluate it. If this is going to be a common issue with the Sage4 they may want to figure out why. Other than this the knife is perfect. Absolutely NO horizontal play. The lock/pivot has gotten very smooth and the blade is falling when the lock is released easier and easier. That may be due to me using Nano-oil for the past few days but that's another subject (and thread BTW).

Update from above post.
Vertical blade play turned into the blade not staying in the handle when closed 2 days later or so. I don't know if the two issues were because of the same problem. A tiny tiny jerk would let the blade fall out about 1/4". I sent it to Spyderco and they replaced it. Since then it became and still is my primary EDC knife. After about a month or so it is broken in and locks solid with no play and closes easily. I also have the G-10 Manbug attached to a Fenix LD01 flashlight that I also carry but the Sage4 is my favorite primary knife. The Sage1 was my favorite (or GB or Chaparral :)) but the Sage4 is #1. It has the same size as the Sage1 and the strength of the GB (or close enough) as far as I can tell. So, for my likes the Sage4 is going to get all the carry time from now on. After many many years of buying $10-$20 knives I decided to spend more money and get ONE knife I really liked. My main goal was better edge retention. S30V has proven to be plenty good enough for my needs even if not the absolute very best. If the Sage4 was in my hands about 5 years ago I may not have bought the other 25 or 30 knives most of which were Spyderco knives. :) Well played Spyderco.:D I have really enjoyed getting and using the knives. I'm not saying I'm not going to buy another knife. But, I'll know more about what to expect I think. The new Chaparral is definately in my future. :D

Read posts 65 and 67 if you want. After 10 months the Sage4 is still in my pocket. I have carried the BF (formerly known as the GB :)) a few times but only for a slight change to add a little variety. Can't help it, the GB is just a GREAT knife. Anyway, since this thread popped up again I'll mention that the Sage4 is still here. :) My normal EDC is in the picture in my signature. Here is the picture of the Sage4 and Manbug (that I also mentioned in the above posts) so it's easier to see. The Manbug is also passing the test of time. These two have spent more consistant time carried since I got them than any other knife I've owned since the day I actually owned more than one knife at a time. They are a little different now but not better. I have changed both knives for fun but the knives are the same great knives and are continuing to pass the test of time.
Thank you Spyderco.

Great choice IMO. One of my 3 favorite knives.
