$100 for a byrd! No thanks unless they use a better blade steel.

I'm pleasantly surprised to see this come out, considering the normal Catbyrd was discontinued.

Yeah, but it's got 9Cr18Mo and we all saw those Mules selling for $80 on ebay!!

I'm glad they upgraded the blade steel, but the style of this doesn't appeal to me.

Those Mules (I bought four of them) were a great deal at $20 but based on how they perform, compared to the other (and admittedly much more expensive) Mules, I'll pass on this one. :(

Would there be any profit to making only the blade for this sort of knife in different flavors? That way you could buy a chinese knife, and have your preference in steel for less. Well, maybe less. :p

Liner lock eh? Kinda strange choice given the Ti handle, no?

Liner lock eh? Kinda strange choice given the Ti handle, no?Not the most common combination perhaps, but not a first for Spyderco either. The titanium versions of the Lum Tanto and Peter Herbst were both liner locks. Am sure other companies and custom makers have made them as well.

I'm confused a bit by the description:

The name of the steel spells out what its components are; 9Cr18Mo breaks down to .9-percent carbon, 16-percent chromium and contains molybdenum.

How does the 16% chromium spell out the name 9Cr18Mo?

haha i thought that too one time. i was taking a crap and reading a spy catalog and looking at the steel chart and trying to understand what all that "stuff" means and the %'s of whats in what. its confusing!:o

also i decided not to buy one becuase of the release of the del's and end's and frn ukpk's...
no money to spare for a "byrd" ewwww! j'k! :p:D

Are the liners titanium or stainless steel?

Who ever pays MSRP for these anyway? So say you can get it for $60 or less, that's pretty good for anything with a titanium handle, decent blade steel, and FFG, especially when it's designed by Spyderco and not something lesser that's also made in China (BM Pika Ti).

i liked it enough to pick one up. it's my first knife with titanium & first spyderco w/ combo edge. if i had 2 i'd certainly carry one, but for now it's just part of the collection. wish the box was better though. it came in a plain nondescript white box. i keep all my spydies in their boxes, & i just wish this knife came in a box as nice as my other spydies. i've actually passed up on knives on the secondary market just because it had no box, even though it was new & unused. to me the box is kinda vital. maybe it's just me.

Anybody had experience with the 9Cr18Mo . Is it much improvement over 8Cr13Mov

It won't be much different if left at RC 56-58. If brought up to 59-60 then yes, there will be a difference. It'll be a bit more wear resistant but it will start getting chippy, like 440C if left too hard.

Sal stated the contractor doesn't like working with it so it's unlikely we will see more of it.
