I have the Spyderco Trainer and was wondering if it was legal for me to own. I need some work done on it but I don't want to send it in if it's not because Spyderco won't return it. Thanks for your help. Ashley

I would think that a trainer is legal, there is no "real" blade to it that can cut. Just my thought, not sure if it is correct. Best of luck though.

It it an Auto trainer or a regular manual knife?

If you are not an LEO, or in the military, I think it would be risky to return any Spyderco balisong, even the trainer, to them for service. It's not so much a question of whether it's legal for you to own it. It's a question of whether Spyderco would be prohibited from returning it to you by the same ridiculous ruling by the 10th Circuit Court which restricts how they can market their balisongs.

I personally think that the auto rule is ridiculous. What about a wave or a straight blade? They are quicker than an auto any day!!!!

It opens like a normal butterfly knife.

I am new to the forum but with my experience if you have any questions or worries go to your local FFL dealer and with a little explaining and a fee they will ship the trainer out and negate any worries. Just make sure you instruct the FFL dealer to include a license and do as much of the leg work as possible for them. ONCE AGAIN, this is my Opinion and what I have done in the pass for myself and others.

Good luck and if you need any more info or a little more detail, all you need to do is ask.

Automatic and or Balisong trainers fall under the same restrictions as live knives.

Would the Baliyo fall under those restrictions? I'm afraid of using mine in public now...

The BaliYo is a pen. It is not a trainer or a knife. Completely unrelated and safe to use anywhere. ;)

I recently sent in my smallfly trainer and was told I needed to send a restricted item form.

Whats wrong with it? Feels and sounds loose? Can't tighten the pivot screws? Or the pivot pins get stuck on the G-10? All of those were wrong with mine.
