Hello.
I've joined this forum not so long ago (Thanx to Kristi Hunter for helping me with my registration), but i've read most of the new threads as a guest.
Now....It is an strange question ... but how you manage to buy Spyderco knives on such a regular basis!
I have a full-time day job, a salary which can be considered descent for my area, i save money...but the moment i have enough to get a Spyderco knive....I always find something else to give the money for.
You probably know...there is always a bill to pay, phones, internet, new furniture (from time to time), clothes and the every day stuff (getting from point A to point B by some transport). Not to mention health expences (going twice to a dentist can cost my monthly income... sounds crazy... but it is true).
And that Endura 4 in the local store slips out my hands for a third time... just because i cannot justify spending about 70$ for a knife and not buying the new hiking backpack that i need so badly.
I always say "Next time!", but the next time is now and i know that i'll take the backpack....so...how you do it???:)

Hello and WELCOME!!!!
Answer to your question...
Its called Fiscal irresponsibility....
We don't chose to spend money on Responsible things... we spend money on Spydies...
Basicly its like crack addicts. They spend money on crack, instead of say... rent or health care or.....
Same thing with us... just blades.. not crack
;););)

oh yeah.. PS.. You can pick up a endura for allot less than $70... look on eBay or some knife sights for the best deals.

First of all, Welcome to the Forum! :)
To answer your question for myself, knives are my foremost hobby. There was a time not too long ago when a new gun would have precluded an expensive knife, or the money would have gone for reloading components. Before that, paintball supplies would have taken precedence. Before that...you get the idea. We all have our priorities.
My house is paid off and livable, my vehicles are paid off and running, I have no credit cards (and therefore no credit card debt). I make pretty good money, have good insurance at work and I'm single. As long as I pay my bills and buy food first, the rest can go for what I want.

To answer your question. I "don't" do it.
I am probably one of the few people here who own less than 10 Spyderco knives. I have bought and sold quite a few, and/or traded some. I however do not have the financial means to have 30 knives or 100 knives or whatever at the same time. I guess in reality I do have the means. I have no credit card debt at all. I have my house payment and 1 car payment. I however choose to spend the money towards our house, upgrades to our furniture, windows, faucets, etc. I'm getting ready to remodel our 1st floor bath, and last year I remodeled our kitchen. Next year I will do our 2nd floor bath, and other stuff.
I have to be very choosy and picky and only buy one knife every now and then. I think on average I buy maybe 4 knives a year.
If I had unlimited funds I would buy a new knife every 2 weeks. Maybe only once a month. To be honest if I bought a new knife any sooner I would never have time to use the new knife and see how I like it.
I use all my knives and I don't baby or "collect" any of them. They are all users. This may be another reason that I am able to "do this" because I don't buy to collect but only to use.

HI:-)
E-bay and other internet shops are not an option. I live overseas and my observations are that here credit card payment over internet are something far from secure. Paypal is not available.
Western union is indeed an alternative and New Graham uses it...They are cool guys, I really like them. Always reply fast to my questions. But i've calculated the price +shippment+ local taxes and possible custom fees...And the price came close to the one in the local store... Another minus is that they use postal services, not courier services like UPS or DHL and i must hope that some local custom-house officer wont open and take the knife for himself (even if it is not ilegal, it happened quite often in the past).
ARH!!!! Enough...:-) we'll beat the maze....

I'm not collecting knives either:-) Behind every knife i own stands at least two months digging in reviews and user opinions. That is how i got the Cara Cara, Catbyrd, Robin, opinel 9 inox, Mora, and 3 SAKs.

Usually when I get a "new" knife, it's through deals on forums (trade, sales). I've only bought a couple in the last year or so, with my last major one being a custom about a year ago.
My main hobby has long since been computers. I spend enough on computer parts every month that I could easily buy at least 1 knife.
Working 2 jobs, and IT work on the side for about 20 computers (this is my computer spending money). New truck (no major repairs, just regular maintenance, unlike my last 2 vehicles), minimal cellphone plan (and a free bare bones phone), no credit cards, and my only real debt being a student loan from 2yrs ago.
End up with about a week's wage for spending every month, more when I do IT work.

Out with the old in with the new :p
Overall don't look at it like your spending $70 bucks look at it that your getting a knife which will last you 10-15 years. It will be a constant companion for utility purposes and will pay for itself many times over. If your budget conscious there are awesome deals to be found on the forums for used Spydies. May I ask where are you located.
take care and good luck on your purchase

It's been about 1 year since my addiction and I have 10 spydercos already :o
i always try to look for the best deals, though - and many of my spydercos have resale value so when I need the money, I'll sell 'em off.
Besides, I live in Canada where healthcare is virtually free. I have not yet been hit with an unexpected health expense.

I don't buy a lot of knives either.
Do have a couple of nice ones accumulated over the years.
First question to myself is "will I use it?"
If not, I can do without.
Also, lack of funds triggered me to start make my own knives, years ago.
It's quite a bit more satisfying then just buying knives and you learn a lot from it.

I agree with Clock; for some of us, it's an addiction. I've never been addicted to anything in my life, but then I met Spyderco.:) Now I literally dream :spyder::spyder::spyder::eek:
Whatever you do, don't buy a Kopa. The Kopa's what really did it to me.:D:D:D

There is your answer! Priorities:D
Paypal is not available? I buy and sell things on E Bay regularly and have gotten paid thru Paypal from overseas. Perhaps not in your area.

Yes!!! Kudos!! I have holes in my socks, and no gas in the car, just a college student that sometimes has to eat ramen or oodles and noodles just to make ends meet. In fact today I ate the old Mac and cheese cause I finally got my blue lum and dont mind sacrificing for it. I knew if I didnt make the effort I would kick myself for the next 4 or 5 years. Its all about priorities. Plus you dont want them to be lonely do you?

Prioritize.
My spelling is in doubt but the message should be clear.
Prioritize where your money goes. A shiney new knife is great but food or your 401k must take presidence.
Knives are are fun but keep your priorities in order.
Do not look to me as an example. I have been bad... I will continue to be bad. Love them Spyderco knives.
That is all. My bad.

- I either bring lunch from home or go home to eat instead of "grabbing" something out, real budget killer.
- Watch for good knife deals or other items that can be "flipped", usually after some time has passed, on Ebay to fund my addiction. Saving up and keeping some cash on hand, $100 or so, can really help when you find something local you know you can resell.

hey knife bro, donŽt worry... you are no only one who doesnŽt understand to that.
I was once asking too on that. And answer?
"We are not feeding with ordinary food, just food with spyderhole and from supreme materials..." or something like that
Or: : "food just once per month..." etc.
One simple advice - every 5 or 10% from your payment save to the lapel on spydies... after year you will se how much you can save for so much great spydies. Or every week 4 dolars save in that lapel - next thing
Try it and youŽll see.

I got $100 a week to live at college, I actually didn't really party the last part of the year just to save money for Spydies... I mean, c'mon...
beer < :spyder:
I managed to live off of like, $40-$60 a week, and that's when the majority of my knives were bought. I'm just saving now that I have a job :D

I buy a lot of knives...
I work extra jobs for spending money. My paycheck goes in the bank and it is 100% devoted to my family. I get some extra money here and there, and I buy knives. If not I would by guns.
Also, if you hang around long enough, you learn how to cut your costs on new knives by at least 20-30% off what you see in retail stores. eBay, good online retailers, or quality brick and mortar stores that have a clue as to what a product should be priced at... These are all options.
Then, in time, you wheeling and dealing. You get a nice nest egg of knives, and you start selling and trading. This forum does not allow it, but other knife forums opening do.

Well, we have a monthly budget and I try and allocate $100.00 per month for knife purchases. Of course, I don't have any other really expensive hobbies or habits. I don't drink, smoke, party or anything like that either (anymore), so I guess buying knives could be considered my only vice. Good news is, I have most of the knives I want so my buying has really slowed down the last few months. But don't ask me about the $1000.00+ I dropped over the winter when I first got re-aquainted with Spydercos!

I will start by saying we have three kids under 3years old. (yep she was preggo for three years in a row!) So I know just as well as anyone one how hard slush funds are to build.
Anyways, if you can get a $100 or so and watch the forums that allow selling and trading GOOD deals do come through. I have made more money than spent on Spydercos. I only have about 10 or so now, but if you know what knives are rare, and what knives will really sell for..... you can make money. I don't like to think of it as flipping, but I guess it is.
Example. I traded into a Rino Horn Lil Temp... I had maybe $125-$135 into the deal, I listed her on evil bay....she sold for $250 (I think?) $200+ I know
Same thing with the Yo's
Same thing with the other Lil temps I had.
You do eat a lot of shipping costs, and time emailing PM'ing and such, but its fun. Packages in the mail 3 or more a week. Sending them out just as fast.
I then moved into the higher class folding knives, Sebenzas and Striders, customs. You can make money on customs also, but not really on the striders and reeves.
Now in my 23 knives I have, I would say they value is worth more than I have spent. (maybe...:D)

Most people are into many things as hobbies be it movies, eating out, games, bars or anything else they do for entertainment.I do not do most of these things or at least very little freeing money for the knife and gun hobby.
I also make and sell lanyards and monkey fists to help with the hobby,I have to say that much of that has been going to pay the gas bill lately.
Sacrifice. Don't do some things you usually do that cost some bucks. No smoking? No drinking? Noodle soup instead of a big mac? Things like that will add up if you put the bucks in a jar long enough, it will add up. Just depends on the sacrifices you are willing to make to get what you really want. Just my two cents tho. Welcome to the forum. :)

Hitting Arby's or Taco Bell everyday for lunch can kill ya in the long run. The amount of money it cost can be substantial when its said and done at the end of the month. at 5 dollars a day is 150 bucks per month. That can easily fund your little sharp habit. Oodles and Noodles for lunch is about 35 cents!! Taco bell only last a few hours.. A Nice knife can last a lifetime.

Let's just say that being single, without a girlfriend, and no kids.... Well, you do indeed end up with a bit of extra cash in your wallet.

Let's just say that being single, without a girlfriend, and no kids.... Well, you do indeed end up with a bit of extra cash in your wallet.Exactly! And I find being over 60, having a job that pays well and has excellent benefits, not being much of a "tourist", and not being actively involved in any other expensive hobbies or sports, all help too.
