Took photos this afternoon of the entire flock. Here's the first batch I processed, these all have scale material that once belonged to four legged animals.

An early production model in Amber Jigged Bone

http://paulberetta.com/kiwimania/images/amber_jigged_bone.jpg

A later production Chestnut Jigged Bone

http://paulberetta.com/kiwimania/images/chestnut_jigged_bone.jpg

A 2006 production Smooth Red Bone

http://paulberetta.com/kiwimania/images/smooth_red_bone.jpg

A very rare "pinned" version of the Smooth Red Bone

And last, but by no means least, Sambar Stag made for me by SFSW

A.G. Russell Black Lip Pearl

SFSW Black Lip Pearl full panel. These were done by flattening the sides of all stainless Kiwis. Not to brag, but this is about the prettiest black lip pearl that I've ever seen.

http://paulberetta.com/kiwimania/images/black_lip_pearl_full_panel.jpg

SFSW Gold Mother of Pearl. From what I understand gold pearl is just white pearl that's been exposed to a certain chemical.

But I did save a few of the best for last. :D These are the ones that don't fit into any of those other categories. There are a few of my real favorites in the batch.

Spyderco production all stainless

http://paulberetta.com/kiwimania/images/marcus_hunt_engraved.jpg

SFSW New Graham Special Jet and Mother of Pearl

http://paulberetta.com/kiwimania/images/new_graham_special.jpg

That's it, except for the three SFSW is working on for me, and the eight "spares" I keep for those times Bill does not have any blanks and I desperately need a Kiwi fix. :D

I see what you're trying to do. These dog gone photos are going to make me buy a SFSW Kiwi.Yep, it's all part of my fiendish plot to keep the Kiwi off Sal's "endangered species" list. Figure that as long as SFSW needs them, there's a better chance of it staying in the lineup.

phenomenal collection Paul !  It's like taking a trip through the Minerology section of a science museum.... :)

I think my favorite bone handled folding knife is the production (smooth) red bone Kiwi....Yes, I agree, some of the least expensive materials are among the most attractive.

Of all the stone ones I have, the malachite is my favorite as well. I love the original production jigged bone, it's inexpensive, but one of those materials that just looks "right" on a pocket knife. I think many different woods, none of which are terribly expensive, at least not in the quantity required for a Kiwi, look great too.

For the future, I'd love to see Spyderco do a run of Tortoiseshell celluloid, another cheap material that's both extremely attractive and very traditional.

Isn't it amazing to have something in your hand millions year old???Maarten, it has been said that "There is a fine line between a hobby and a mental illness" . Sometimes I'm not sure myself which side of that line I fall on. ;) :D.

As for the bone. Best answer I can give you is to quote from the SFSW website's description of the dinosaur bone they use:

Bone is a common material for knife handles - and we have the oldest bone available. The gemstone in these knife handles is actually a section of petrified bone form a sauropod (brontosaurus) that lived over 150 million years ago. Coming from Moab, Utah, the colors vary dramatically from red to brown, black, white & yellow depending on the minerals surrounding the bone as it became petrified.

I would imagine that iron oxide would be a major contributor to the red, limestone to the white, and perhaps sulphur to the yellows, not really sure about the others.

i really like the mammoth tooth and SFSW Gaspeite - a new stone from the Gaspe Penninsula in Canada is a pretty cool color. whats the grand total up to on the flock? Do you have one display case to show them all in?Yes the Gaspeite is very pretty, and it's probably a good choice for the Kiwi, as it resembles the inside of a Kiwifruit.

"Grand total" depends on how you do the math. The 38 that appear in the photos are the ones I would defninitely count. At any given moment those are in a display case in my living room, except for the one in my jeans and another on my nightstand. Then there are 7 more bolster and scales ones that I have in boxes, which I keep for those times when I want a custom made one and Bill is out of blanks and 2 more all stainless ones in case I get a hankering for another engraved one (I really need one by an American engraver). Then there are the 3 that are "in the pipeline". Finally there's the handful I've given as gifts.

Awesome, simply awesome. I like the Patriot and Charoite Kiwis best! Do keep updating this thread as the flock grows! Thanks Wouter, I plan on adding the new ones to it as they arrive. There are three "in the works" right now, two of which should be here within the next couple months. Lignum Vitae thanks to STR, and Slovakian opal thanks to Jano. The third is something really special, it will feature marquetry which Bill is having a very small quantity of made at my request.

Quite a great collection.

Does anyone know if most ivory is so "grainy", I can't say that I've seen it up close before, so I didn't know. Thanks Zen :D The short simple answer would be that those pieces probably show a bit more color contrast between the "growth layers" than average.

But, think of ivory as being something like wood, a natural substance that grows over a long period of time. Like wood, some pieces will show more contrast than others and, also like wood, even pieces cut from the same block, but oriented differently will show less, or more "grain". There are probably also differences between the ivory from different species. Then there's the additional factor of age. Fresh off the elephant, ivory is a creamy white, but it tends to darken with age, especially if exposed to sunlight. The ivory on that Kiwi is pre-ban "legal ivory" so it's at least twenty years old, and from what the seller told me, I believe it is closer to one hundred. So it's had plenty of time to acquire a "suntan".

I really like those "full panel" Kiwis Paul.....that black pearl / red coral duo... I can't wait to see the Slovakian Opal version.... :)No problem Brian, NGK and I may have added to the confusion, since when I bought my Charoite one they had the names crossed on the website and I was calling it Sugilite for a long time. And I screwed up too, the stuff Jano sent me is Onyx, not Opal. But I'm definitely looking forward to seeing it completed. Here's a preview, a mock-up done in Xara...

http://paulberetta.com/images/apr_07/kiwi_slovak_stone.jpg

... I do this whenever I'm considering having a Kiwi done in material I supply, so when Jano first sent me the onyx, I wet it, to get an idea of how it will look polished, took some photos of it wet, scaled the photo to one I have of a Kiwi in Xara and "cut" scales out of the stone.

:DMatt I'm sure that the varying living conditions over an animals lifespan do have an effect on the thickness, densiity, and possibly even the color, of some of the layers. It makes sense that layers formed in years when food or water were scarce would differ from those formed in years of plenty. It would be quite surprising if they did not.

As for the dinosaur bone, when you think about it, mineral content is what's responsible for the color of all rocks. Malachite, for example, gets its greens from copper salts. And you're right, the history and details of the various materials used for scales can be a fascinating study in its own right.

Will definitely post the new ones as they arrive.

Wonderful Paul!!! My favorite is the 2nd Mammoth Tooth, just gorgeous...How come you don't have one in 18k gold? I know gold is soft but it would make a nice safe queen...don't ya think?....Great collection!....Makes my mouth water!....Doc:DThing is Doc, none of my Kiwis are safe queens, they all get pocket time and use. Some more, some less, but they all get a turn. That said, I still think gold work has a place on "users". So far, the only example I have is on a Marcus Hunt engraved C105 Persian, but you never know. ;) I've been kicking around the idea of getting another Sambar Stag Kiwi done, then having someone do engraving with gold inlays on the bolsters, and add gold pins to the scales. :D

Paul,
Your flock has grown nicely. I like that your patriotic is 2-sided :) I'm curious as to your marquetry(sp) Is Bill making a kiwi on a kiwi.
ChrisThanks Chris. No, not a Kiwi on a Kiwi, although that thought did cross my mind, so maybe next year. These are going to be "mini earthlings". :)

That picasso marble is so funky! It's like a flannel kiwi. It really matches the model though! I love it!Yes, Picasso marble does have a funky "disorganized" look to it. The pieces on that Kiwi are nicely book matched, but in general the stone shows tremendous variation in color and pattern.

Thanks Daniel, I may need to find a taller tripod to get them all in one shot. ;) Do want to do a new one, but also think the Kiwimania page is a better way to view them, it's reached the point where group shots don't really show off the individual knives well.

The gold-quartz looks really interesting, wonderful patern. What nr. are you currently on Kiwis Paul?

Thanks Jano. And I think it looks even better than the photos show. But it must be a bear to work with, as they charge more for it than any of the other stones they use.

As for the size of the flock, it depends a bit on how you count. :) Including the quartz one, there are now 39 on my Kiwimania page. But two of those might be considered doubles, so 37 truly unique ones would be the most conservative number. If you count my "spares", then it's 52 as of the moment, but that could change if the Onyx and Lignum ones show up from SFSW, or a couple more "spares" :o that I ordered arrive, or both.

Just received these from Santa Fe Stoneworks. The first is my long awaited Earthling Kiwi, the second a slight variation on the same theme using a more orange stone for Saturn. Anna Wirtel calls it "Tequila Sunrise". When you consider the size difference between a Police and a Kiwi it's rather amazing that even the two gentlemen responsible for Santa Fe's marquetry, talented as they are, could pull these off.

This last is to show just how much smaller the Earthling Kiwi is compared with the Earthling Police...

http://paulberetta.com/images/June/kiwi_stand_02.jpg

It's a prototype for an idea Bill's daughter Anna has for a stand with two ellipses like this joined together to hold a themed group of Kiwis. Used the way she intends, the slots need to be repositioned a bit so the knives are properly spaced when faced "edge in". I plan to wall mount it with the straight edge of the base at the top, so the current orientation of the knives is fine.

I also picked up five different scale materials from as many different vendors. That will allow me to pester Bill a few more times and add still more posts to this thread. :D My only problem now is deciding which one to do first. :o

Oh My Goodness Paul !

Your Kiwimania temptations are really making me drool over my keyboard. The scales on that one is spectacular ! what is it ?

I love that knife stand as well. It reminds me of a very elegant interpretation of some silly wine bottle holders that we sometimes find out here. Mounted the way you suggest would make the Kiwis really stand out. Get a few of those stands on your walls and it'll look a bit like the medieval castle of yore, with weapon walls etc.

Please, dare I ask for more photos of the 5 Kiwis you herded on the day :D

Quite an interesting design for a stand, I imagine it'd look very good on the wall as well! This business about them just giving you the stand sounds fishy though, was it just because you're a (very) valued customer, or perhaps they just gave it to you because they knew you'd be back for more? That stand isn't going to hold all your Kiwis...:p

Given Paul's reply to Dan a few posts back, mammoth tooth?

Thanks Th232, you may be right, but I think Dan and Paul were referring to the blue mammoth tooth Kiwi, two above the one I'm looking at.

Paul posted he picked the red/pink up at the Santa Fe booth at Blade, but I don't recall he mentioned what material it is. However, I think he posted the pic in response to some praise of a mammoth tooth Kiwi, so perhaps it's mammoth tooth too. This, and the Black Pearl one shown earlier in this thread were made by Spyderco exclusively for A. G. Russell back in 2004. They differ from Santa Fe Stoneworks pearl customs in that they have brush finished bolsters, like those on all production Kiwis, while SFSW always mirror polishes theirs.

I carried my Kopa in pocket a bit and it got scratched up pretty good within a couple of days (aint no safe queen anymore). I carry using clip now to keep it up and away from my keys and change and stuff. Carrying in other pocket has phone to deal with so that doesnt solve it for me. If I did all those cool mods, I would be paranoid about scratches...

My Kiwis are always carried in my watch pocket and the always ride alone, so there's nothing to scratch them. Even my large folder gets a dedicated pocket. Been doing it that way for about as long as I've been carrying knives, was a bit of a shock to me when I started coming to the forums and found most folks didn't.

I just got my first Kiwi and Deacon, I now know what your excitement is all about. I love this knife. It's got a great ergos, a lot of cutting power for it's size due to Wharny blade but still nkp friendly, great f&f, and it's possibly the sharpest out of the box knife I've ever owned, which is great because I hate sharpening a new knife. And at the $60 I paid it's a incredible deal.

I will definitely be purchasing more variations of this knife. My one complaint is that the blade is slightly off center but when I push it it centers but eventually goes back. If anyone has a fix for that let me know.

The jigged bone itself is rather unusual, in that all the other jigged bone Kiwis I own and have owned, whether amber or chestnut, display a fair amount of red, while this knife has almost none.

i am amazed at all of the kiwis Paul. i have alot of enduras but they are all basically the same: either steel or frn with a few colors thrown in. the amount of variety is just astounding. the red bone looks rather bland compared to the other scales that you have had done on your site and when i just rcvd it i thought to myself this is too pretty to take apart. hopefully i will do it justice with its new clothes:D. that AG Russell looks classy, almost like a pair of nice jeweled cufflinks.

Yet another little jewel from Santa Fe via New Graham...

I must admit that I have a love/hate relationship with black pearl. It is one of the most visually exciting materials, in no small part because of how the rainbow of colors within it shift with the slightest movement. But, possibly for that very reason, I find it to be the most difficult material to photograph to my own satisfaction. The three above are the best out of over 100 I took of this knife and, to be perfectly honest, none of them do the knife justice.

Tonydahose strkes again :D with yet another super looking Kiwi. This one is "Sun" yellow Corian. I've had a craving for a bright yellow Kiwi for ages and when Tony sent me a link to the Corian website, I saw this stuff and had to have it.

Latest addition. Not a Kiwi, but a mug I had done up a few weeks back by Cafe Press featuring Kiwis...

Got this one, and a few others, back from Tonydahose today. Scale material came from Charles Turnage and, according to his description: "are from the permafrost Pleistocene Era, consisting of animals like the Irish Elk and the Pleistocene Bison. The average age of the fossils are 20,000-50,000 years old."

wow those pics look great Paul. Sal should have you be the official photograper for Spyderco, all you would get for payment is to keep everything he sends and you email him the pictures...seems like a win win situation:D Thanks for the compliments everyone and a big thanks to Paul for one, being a loyal customer and two, for trusting me and supplying me with the first kiwi to work on. :)

These two arrived from Tony's workshop today. Both are "gold web" Recon Stone, one black, one red. Both are beauties, but the red is perhaps the most eye catching scale material I've ever seen.

One of two that arrived from Tony yesterday. The material is stabilized end grain red palm. From what Tony said, it was a bear to work with, but the result is stunning. The dark dots are harder than the lighter wood surrounding them and create a pebbled texture on the surface. Tony's nickname for it was braille, mine is chocolate chip. :D

The other new one from Tony is ox horn, which the supplier calls "Honey Horn". It's another one of those materials I'd wanted to try on a Kiwi for a long time.

Absolutely gorgeous collection, and your sphere of influence is growing!

I've been on the forum around a year, have seen your posts, and Tony's posts of the first Kiwi's he did for you, but somehow the knife just remained "interesting" to me, but didn't really appeal to me. The more I've looked at it though, and your impressive collection, it just kind of grew on me.

I have my first Kiwi (Gold Lip Mother of Pearl) on its way from NGK! Now you are costing me money! :) I'm sure it won't be my last Kiwi, although there is now way I'll ever have a collection as impressive as yours and Tony's are.
