Great pics, WhyNot! I'm always impressed with mirror pics set against a blue sky (I don't get to see blue skies very often :( ) You also might be onto something with the dyad configured Ladybug/Jester

Over the last year and a half I took plenty of pictures. Most of them are “mirrored”. Most of them are junky:o I am trying to select just a few photos worth sharing. I hope it works.

the Gold Pearl Kopa is one of my favorites too..... along with the Cocobolo one...

I hope you will keep Shabaria in your excellent collection. I would be glad if my pictures could convince you to do it.:)

I love the blade shape but just cant for the life of me figure out the handle. What gives?!

THE INCREDIBLE,
I kind of agree with you. Hourglass-shaped handle feels different in my hand.
According to The Spyderco Story, the Shabaria is an ancient design which people used for more than 1700 years.
I guess, they just did not hear about Caly 3. :p
I still think that Shabaria is one of the most unusual and beautiful Spydies.

I truly wish those zowadas were still around. The plain handle like the BM 710 and slim profile are sort of rare now in the spyderco line up. I would love to see spyderco make more simple designs like this.

Brian,
Thanks!
I totally agree with you on Chinook ergonomics. I would also add that for the blade that thick it came scary sharp out of the box. Only one thing that bothers me a little - the blade drops like a rock when you press the lock. I guess it can be adjusted..

Giant1,
I agree that it might take a little more effort to close Volpe with one hand. I think it can be at least partially attributed to the overall slickness of that knife. There is basically no single unpolished surface with exception of the blade.
Thank you for you comments!

Now that you mention it Brian, a taller lip on the innner scale would fix the problem. It is stiff to operate but would be OK if it had the bigger lip.

I would not go as far as saying that C56 Zowada is my new favorite, but I do like this model especially in PE version.
I remember discussion not long ago about VG-10 version of C56. Apparently VG-10 Zowadas are more difficult to find. So, when opportunity came along I got one.
To my surprise, I found much more than just blade steel upgrade from AUS-08 to VG-10. As you can see below, 50/50 blade became PE. Back spacer was gone, but there is a second full liner. It became all screw construction. Ithink all these changes are great improvement to the original design. I would like to learn more about C56. I think it would a good question for General Discussion forum.

Tom

Tom,
Here is what I got from Spyderco 2002 dealer catalog (courtesy of Ted http://www.spydie.nl/catalogs )

Blade Thickness 1/8" 3mm
Diam. Blade Hole 2 1/64" 8.5 mm
Weight 3.1oz 88g
Length blade 3 3/16" 81 mm
Length closed 4 7/16" 113mm
Length cutting edge (PE model) 3" 76mm
Length overall 7 11/16" 195mm

There are plenty of Spydercos that have similar blade/handle sizes, but as far as I know none of them closely resembles the shape of C56.

Peter,
Is there any known problem you refer to?
Lock feels a little sharp when you touch it, but it is rock solid...like the rest of the knife:D
I totally agree with you - serrations are very photogenic!:)

Peter1960
01-13-2008, 09:05 AM
You read between the lines ;) Once I had a Viele 1st gen with AUS-8 in plain and the liner was at the end of the last third, though, the blade was mint. I sold it and now I've a Viele with VG-10, the liner finds its position at first third on the ramp, that's more than ok.

IMO the 1st gen is better in fit & finish - except the liner lock position maybe.

WhyNot
01-13-2008, 10:49 AM
Peter,
I guess I know what you are talking about now.
On the picture below, the older Viele is on the right. The liner is almost at the end of the ramp. I understand that under hard use this lock has more chances to fail that the one with liner positioned at the first third. Is it correct?
http://i100.photobucket.com/albums/m25/WhyNot_007/Viele/Vv-topP1130021.jpg
There is no way I would get rid of this knife though. At least for this reason alone. The opening and closing is very smooth. And it feels solid in open position. And finally, I like it too much.:)
I also checked the rest of my knives with liner locks and found this.
In older PS Zowada with AUS-8 blade(right) I cannot engage liner lock anymore...

It looks like Spyderco did have some problems with liner locks in the past.

from holland with an edge!!!
Ben,
Thank you very much!
Congratulations on getting Caly 3. You should be ready take pictures of this great knife. All you need is a camera and a mirror. The rest is just a matter of practice. I think mirror shots are the easiest ones.

Does your Olympus camera suit you. Why not... seems to me you do magic with it.

Ben
Olympus was more than enough for me for taking knife pictures. With exception of R2 everything else here has been shot using Olympus c7000. All mirror and bark pictures have been taken outside. Olympus is a great camera but like every other Zoom Compact has its limitations.
I wanted to learn more about photography and recently bought Nikon D40x. I used it for R2 pictures.
The worst thing about Nikon - I cannot blame my failures on a camera anymore:rolleyes: .
Good luck!

WhuNot,
Thank you,
These R2 pictures like a balm for my old heart. :)
I am really glad that you decided to get this knife. IMHO it is one of the best EDC around. Beautiful lines as well.
Very nice.
Persians? :p
Please. Three days weekend?

I am glad that I followed your advise and bought R2. Now I understand why you are so high on this one.
Little Persian became my favorite the moment I opened the box. I like everything about it.
I hope to come up with some pictures that would do justice to this beauty.
"Three day weekend"
Regards,
WhyNot.

Very nice pictures as usual WhyNot. Your tasty pictures make me have to mop up my keyboard and desk :D Gunting, R2, Volpe, all so beautiful.

You'll definitely love the Nikon. I have a D70 and D80 myself, but too lazy to do any setup to take photos. I am an oportunistic photographer and shoot where I can, indoors, outdoors. I should take more time and care to setup so my pics look as sharp as your ones.

Pictures of my favourite Persians ? :D :p yes please.... more, more :)

It's a GREAT picture :D At first I thought that you had 2 CC#032 Volpes, but it took a lot of looking for me to find the spine reflection on the picture below the live blade. Your photography keeps evolving, and I keep being impressed by it :D :D :D

I definitely like the Nikon!
You see, here is a difference between living in Australia and US Midwest... I can allow myself to be opportunistic only for the certain part of the year.
There are not too many opportunities shooting outside when it is 10C-20C below:eek:
BTW. Persians are coming (see below)

uhiforgot,

Here are a few less challenging pics with setup similar to Volpe's. I hope you'd like them as well.

Thank you, thank you, thank you, guys!

Here is my new favorite - C105 Mini Persian.
I can probably say that I like it even more than C83 mostly because C105 is much lighter and fits my hand perfectly. And like all Ed Schempp's folders it simply looks gorgeous!

I am an old Olympus guy, my first camera (and only camera for 20+ years) was am OM-1. First digital is a C2020, but went over to the dark side a couple of Christmas ago, a D70 ;)

Gotta say, I have learned alot watching you guys here on the forum compose, and shoot your Spydies :)

Escuse my ignorence, but what is the significance of #117? I have the same number on my pink Endura, and puzzle over it.

It is the collectors club number.

The Deacon has a fine site worth looking at where the CC-#'s are explained:

http://paulberetta.com/

Just click at "Spyderco Collecting FAQ" on the left side and follow the link

"What Do The Numbers On Some Spyderco Knives Mean?"

It is a long story...
In short collectors club #117 at some point belonged to a famous knife maker. I do not know who is owner of #117 now.

Kris is finally here!
My Schempp family is complete! For now.
I would not choose Kris over any of the Persians for household chores, but it feels as comfortable as all other Ed's designs. And it looks great to me.
