Hi Wouter,
Nice toys, now I know were the money went...........;)
But why all serrated?
And why a knive attached to a knive... and not to a light?
Yep you got some nice new toys in all kinds of colors.:p
kind regards,
Werner
Mr Blonde
07-05-2007, 01:41 PM
Easy, the light's on the keychain (with a prybaby). The keychain has no sharp objects on it so I won't forget taking them off when going through security checkpoints. Plus, I use the SAK only for a better grip on the Ladybug and its tools...not the knife blade. And the teeth just work better for me in these short blades.

Wouter,
I am so impressed with your pictrues! It's not easy to take a good picture of a single Persian due to the combination of its grind and bolsters. I do not have one yet, but I can imagine it is even more challenging with Kris. Somehow you are able to capture all three with amasing quality and taste. Do you know some kind of secret?
Thanks,
WhyNot
Wouter,
These pictures are amazing. I am not big fan of Kris or mini-Persian, but I love your pictures.
You certainly know some magic. I saw many times pictures of al three Schempps together, but it never was that good.
Are you graduated from Hogwarts? :D
Mr Blonde
07-24-2007, 11:35 AM
Thanks guys, the Schempps are indeed a challenge to shoot. I'm still not entirely happy with how the Kris came out, but that's life the more time you spend doing something well, you see more things that 'could be better'.
I have two secrets:
1) spending a lot of time huddled over my homemade lightbox, sometimes to the dismay of "Mrs. Blonde".
2) try out the tips you get from online threads and friends.
My recipe:
- clean the knives with windex
- two lights and white homemade carboard white screens to bounce the light of in as many angles as possible
- adjust the white balance setting on your camera to the use of indoor artificial lighting (in my camera it's a fixed setting, no adjusting of numbers or something)
- photoshop for cropping and resizing
- photoshop some more to paint over the few most annoying specks of dirt/dust that somehow got in the pic
- photoshop for the last time to adjust the color balance a bit more and sharpen once.
I got it down to processing about 4 pics in Photoshop in about 20 minutes.

Thanks guys. And now for something different!
Earlier this year I got this Spyderstand from a dear friend. The stand was used by Spyderco a few years ago to promote the then new Meerkat and the Phantom Lock. Unfortunately, the Phantom Lock never took off. I'd love to see it in different models. The stand, however, is now a wonderful piece of 'spyderbilia' in my small study between my display cabinets and my Spyderco 'wall of fame' pics. ;-)

Actually, I'm in the process of negotiating 'sharing rights' on the SFSW Delica. :D She will carry it, as would I. But her favorite knife to date is the Police Tieclipit, followed by the blue almite Navigator. They clip easier to a lining in a purse.

My Kopa collection......for now.:D

Wouter,
Thank you very much for Kopas. This is one of the best Kopas pictures I ever saw. Are you going to get jigged bone Kopa?
Mr Blonde
01-30-2008, 02:02 PM
Nah, I don't really like jigged bone. The only jigged bone I somewhat like is on a Jess Horn, which I don't own btw.
I'm curious what next years' Kopas will look like.

impressive (as ever) Wouter! great job  I'm intrigued what the stacked wood Kopa will look like......too many being released at once.... * must resist* jigged bone, stacked wood, pacific blue bone, abalone w/B&W pearl stripes, giraffe bone....any more? heck, i haven't even scored a MOP/abalone one yet :o it's gonna be an expensive :spyder: year ;)
p.s. I'm glad that the "average price" for a Kopa seems to have trended downwards a notch :)

Thanks guys. Due to a new dining table with a glass top, I'm forced to abandon my lightbox, which used both a tile and a pair of screw-on lamps. I've moved on my balcony; an overcast day does wonders for lighting, at the expense of detail on blade grinds though. Still, I'm quite a bit happier with these pics than my previous ones.

Wouter,
IMHO your Schempp's family picture is the best I ever saw. I am not big fan of Kris, but you convinced me to get one when you posted family picture the last time. If you do not mind, I would love to put three Schempps separately in display box the same way how you compose you picture.
Amazing job Wouter.

Michael, I like the sheath a lot. The fit is just right, and it makes for a very compact package. Sometimes I even slip the sheath in my front pocket (without a clip or teklok) and that carries fine too. The sheath has held up pretty fine so far.

I've really come to appreciate the Delica, I use and carry my pink D4 nearly every day.

Mr Blonde
04-09-2008, 01:49 PM
The G10 delica is definitely in my top 3 of current ultimate EDC knives; Stretch II, UKPK, G10 Delica 4. It's hard to choose which is better. So far, I consider the G10 D4 as a 'junior Stretch II', apart from the steel difference.

Nice D4s (and D5 :p) Wouter,
Can't wait for mine to arrive in the mail. Quick question.... have you tried to swap out a SE blade onto the G10 handles ? Just wondering if the screw locations/ size etc are all the same for some Daddy-Lego action :D
Mr Blonde
04-12-2008, 01:06 PM
I haven't taken the G10 D4 (:p ) apart. I really like the fit and finish on it, as well as the current blade (love that flat grind). I haven't felt the need to switch the blade. I did examine by eye if a swap would be possible; I think a swap with a regular D4 is possible, unless there's a surprise under the scale. If I get a second one, I'm sure I'll try to swap it.

The thing is, the R (1 or 2) is a wonderful user. I carry the R2 fairly regularly, the blade is a nice size and the handle is superb. I'd love to see an R3; I'm not sure what could be improved over the R2, but I'm sure the Spydercrew could come with an improvement or two. A left-handed clip option would be nice.

I love this thread. All I can say is, eye popping, jaw dropping, show stopping (the pictures as well as the knives). Such clarity & detail in the pics. Love the pic of your Li'l T's where you can see the different size holes in the clip. The "SAL" logo differs in size as well. Thank you, Wouter.

I'll admit this got kind of out of hand.:D
It started with the yellow salt which I wanted to try out the H1 steel. A month later my wife brought the glow-in-the-dark SAK Climber as a gift from a trip to Switzerland. On my following birthday my buddy gifted me a yellow Pelican case, for storing my SF light(s) and batteries.
http://spydercollector.wordpress.com/files/2010/01/edc_vacation2008_1.jpg
I quickly found that these would make wonderful travel accessories; lightweight, good design and not too pricey so I wouldn't feel too bad if I lost any of them. The Salt can go in a pocket, swimming pool or ocean and the color is NKP-friendly, as is the limited bladelength and the rounded tip. The SAK is as NKP-friendly as it gets. More importantly, the SAK is a great pocket knife and the tools in the Climber are 'just right', I never miss any other tool. The Pelican case fits in the leg pocket on my swimming trunks. I usually stuff my keys, roomkey and some cash in it and me and my wife can both go swimming without worrying about our valuables getting stolen at the poolside or beach.
http://spydercollector.wordpress.com/files/2010/01/edc_vacation2008_2.jpg
So when I was looking for a more expendable SF; airlines lose stuff, I couldn't resist to simply go all out and get a yellow G2, filled with a cree led drop-in module. I modified the feauxton on the SAK, so it gives out white light from a yellow case. The yellow battery carrier was a no brainer.
This was a lot of fun to assemble, and all of the gear was quite affordable.
Wouter
PS, for anyone who doubts the 'glow-in-the-dark' feature of the SAK, here's a shot of the knife -in our bathroom- right after the photoshoot. I checked back a few hours later, and the knife still glowed.

Wouter, how do you like your battery holder?
Mr Blonde
04-27-2008, 05:08 AM
Functionally speaking the SF battery carrier is better; watertight and no rattle. My yellow battery holder is nice for packing in a bag or suitcase (flat) and the batteries stay put, but there's a hint of rattle and with a heavy shock a battery can get dislodged a bit, although not completely released from the holder.

Thanks. At times I get tempted to go really hi-line in EDC items. But when I try to offset the different pro and cons (ergos, ease of carry etc..), I end up with these medium priced, but hi-quality, items.

That's a Dutch brand so you're more than OK with that choice in my book! You can't get Coors over here, but I got a small stash from a dear friend of mine, and I just really love how it tastes like 'vacation' if you know what I mean.:D

Thank you Wouter.
Amstel Light is my choice for at least last 10 years. Before that it was Heineken for another 7.
Yes, I know how vacation tastes, I even know how smells (for me it smells like a sea). :)

It may not be as obvious at first sight, but there three distinctly different shades of red FRN in this pic. I suspect Spyderco has switched to a brighter shade of red for their trainers. Or someone in Seki made a mistake in mixing the FRN color.:D
http://spydercollector.wordpress.com/files/2010/01/redfrn.jpg
The blades, even the top edges of the waved D4 trainer are rounded nicely. The Waved D4 also hasn't developed the darker patina as all the other folding trainers have.
http://www.spydercollector.nl/upload/news/redfrn_blade.jpg
Maybe this demonstrates better, that Spyderco has switched to a slightly brighter shade of red for the Waved D4 Trainer. Perhaps it's the first run and now all trainers will be a bit brighter.

...What tools are in it and where did you get it?
The SS Victorinox Classic, has a small blade, small file, small screwdriver, small scissors. I think I picked it up in Nuremberg earlier this year, together with the Orange one. Most knife dealers should have it or be able to get it for you.
