I like:

One of my favorites is the Garden knife. I like everything about it, blade shape, handle shape, lanyard hole, size and Sandvik 12C27 blade steel. It takes a mad squabbles edge.

Congrats on your Peace Corp. service.

Good choices. You did well and I think your gift recipients will be delighted and amazed. Very glad that I could help.
About a year ago my son gave Opinel Garden knives to male family members attending his wedding. I tied lanyards, hangman's knots with figure eight keeper knots, on all of the knives. There were karabiners provided with a personalized wedding phrase (I tied lanyards for these as well). To the last man, everyone is carrying the karabiners with lanyards on their key chains and using the Opinels.
All but one of the Opinel recipients had never seen anything like them before. The one had been to Europe and had brought back a single Opinel. He prized this one and had the regret for years that he had not bot many more for his own use.
I was only able to get the Garden knives from Paris then as they had just come out. They embody just about everything that Opinel enthusiasts, over the years, have done to pimp their Opinels. I had asked BladeMatrix, then, if they would carry those knives. They figured that they would not. I am happy that they carry them now as I have bot some extras.
I have sharpened mine, with the EdgePro, so that it is razor-edged. It cut me once without immediate pain. I felt the slightest contact and was surprised to see the claret flow. It is one of the scariest knives I own. Still mad at it I think.
All the best,
oregon
