Hi,

what will be the approximate shipping date for the refined Para? Is it Christmas 2006, Summer 2007 or even Christmas 2007? I want one. Should I wait or better get one now?

i was thinking the same thing as i have recently got a para but

the para thats out now is an excellent knife

its my edc at the minute and has replaced the likes of the manix 80mm ,delica 4 and the native 3D

its light with a smooth opening and i like CPM S30V

i dont see any reason not to get the current model

although i may still have to get the updated one ;)

It looks to me like Sal was just gathering some info so the refined Para might be a ways off.

-BryanI would agree Bryan, it seems a bit soon to me to be expecting concrete results from that. The Generation 4 versions of the Delica and Endura took about a year from discussion to production. The Navigator mods took about the same, and Dragonfly mods discussed even earlier have yet to materialize. Then again, with Spyderco, you never know, some things have happened with amazing speed and this is a Golden made knife, which may facilitate change.

Considering the suggestions Sal got when he asked for "refinements", he may very well have scrapped the whole idea. When I read through those threads, it looked like most posters wanted a new knife rather than a refined Para.

There were plenty of us asking for simple things, you know. Sal is more than capable of separating the wheat from the chaff, I am sure.

Obviously he's gonna discard suggestions to put a ball bearing lock on a knife with tip-down carry clip mount.

He could easily address things like the sharp corner of the tang; the left/right clip options; replacing one of the two Torx screws on the pivot with something that's fixed in place so you don't need two Torx drivers for adjustments...

-JeffreyKnow for me, as a lefty, handed locks have little or no appeal, and I consider the compression lock to be a handed lock. Perhaps it's the same for Scott, since I know he's a fellow southpaw.

I did post to the original thread, but only because I thought the idea I was presenting was something that would widen the market for the knife, not out of personal interest in it, with or without the mods. Can't speak for others, but I know I often find it easier to be logical when I can be dispassionate than when I'm a "stakeholder" in the outcome.

I hope they refine it to accomidate use south paws.. thats the one reason I dont have one.

I agree that thread was much just asking for cosmetics and in many ways (like asking for BG-42 steel) taking a gigantic step backwards. The lack of liners keep it light and not thick which for many users is a plus. The compression lock doesnt need to be any stronger, and I highly doubt anyone would say the blade design needs to be changed. The handle itself contours to the human hand nicely, so why change that. As said earlier, a step up in strength goes to the Manix 80mm.

The only changes I see practical and happening are 4 way carry and lefty versions and a maybe on the low rise clip. The Para is already a splended knife so I do not really see a need to change it. I hear very few complaints on it except price.

Hi Thomas,

We're still refining the design, so there is little to say on date.

At Spyderco, a design is "always a work in progress". We phase in changes (like jimping texture and location, liner changes, etc.).

A "new generation" of a model requires detailed planning, engineering and testing.

When one considers how many models are being evolved and created in any give year, it surprises even us.
