View Full Version : Possible "world record" for oversize packaging...
The Deacon

Bought a memory card for my new camera a few days ago. Had to take a picture of the packaging before opening it up. The knife that I included, to give a sense of scale, is a full size C83 Schempp Persian. The purple and yellow rectangles were added by me. The purple one outlines a second, completely sealed, "clam pack" inside the larger clam pack. The yellow outlines the small white plastic case which contains the actual memory card, the small black object centered in it. For those not into digital photography, the card itself measures .875" X 1.25" and perhaps twice the thickness of a credit card. The outer clam pack is 10" X 15". I realize that, in this day and age, such packaging is needed to allow a tiny, relatively expensive ($30) item, to be placed on a self service display, but it still gave me a chuckle. Of course the other amazing thing is that twenty years ago, I paid over ten times as much for a hard drive with less than one-tenth the storage of that card (or, to put it another way, the amount of storage that card provides would have cost almost $4000).

Anti theft measurements have gone a long way during the course of history. Sadly the amount of security sometimes makes you wonder where it will end.
Anyone ever had to try to get a Barbie-doll out from it's box? You need a sturdy knife , patience and technical ingenuity just to get the doll out! :)

WHOA! That is a big waste of plastic, if I've ever seen one :(. My memory card came in the same sort of wasteful packaging, but not on that large a scale.
BTW- That Persian looks SUPER sweet Deacon! Burled walnut?

Agreed - I bought a 1GB USB memory drive and that package looks about the same size. Even with the "correct" tools, they are still ugly to open. Have you also noticed that the Sandisk clampak plastic is significantly thicker than other? I bought a Paladin/SOG PT510 multitool at the same time, and that one was actually pretty easy to open comparatively speaking:) I also agree that you have to study that packaging a bit before you decide where to start cutting - some of the stuff has extra support stuff in there to stop things from moving.

And you still wonder why I say to get a SS/SE cricket?
It eats cable ties and clampacks.... and fingers if you don't get em out of the way when it's hungry.

The other amazing thing is the size of the drive. Could you even have imagined 20 years ago having half a gig of storage in a package that you could drop in your shirt pocket and forget?

Yep, anti theft measures that, unfortunately, will only deter a dedicated shoplifter for a few seconds. I've watched guys slice open several of those packages and remove the cards in just a few seconds.

I bought a CD like that once, the side was slit and the disc was gone. Luckly I noticed on the way to the car. The saddest part is the "no-customer" service guy put it right back into the cart that was going back out on the floor.

I used to have a 10 Mb hard disk those days; it was big like a coffee mug and rattling. When I read they built a Mac with 40 Megs of RAM I said they are crazy (it was when Bill Gates was saying 640 kbytes should be enough for just about everyone)

Nope, I know that wood to see it. Ironwood. Deacon got my "Holy Grail." One will be made later, though.
I remember what deacon is talking about. It was a proud (and expensive) day getting the first family computer with a 500Mb hard drive, and a CD ROM    !!!!

I once sent a little Lightnin HTA II (Smaller than a delica) to Buck Knives for repair. They returned it in a box big enough to fit 6 baseball bats!!!
I never could figure out why...

Looks like you paid as much for the packaging as you did for the card!
My lab needed a large quantity of glass microscope slides which we duly ordered. The order was misinterpreted and rather than send us 50 boxes of fifty slides (which we wanted) they sent us one box of fifty slides. This measured roughly 3/4" x 3/4" x 2". It was sent in a box approximately 30" x 15" x 15" full of packing foam.
