Hello All

I have just seen the results of the devastating earth quake today in Asia. I know that we have a number of forumites living around the area. I hope that you are all OK and have not been affected by this tragedy.

My prayers go out to you all.

Thanks for letting us know Sam. It is a relief to know that fellow Spydieknuts are OK when disasters like this happen.

I'm incredibly relieved to hear from Samo and some of the other Asian Knife Nuts at BFC. I keep praying that the toll will not climb much higher and I will keep those who have lost friends and families in my thoughts and prayers as I go about my safe and insulated day. The Nicobar Islands are extremely remote and officials feel that another 3,000 people have perished there. Sri Lanka has asked the US directly for help. Australia is using their CAF transports to fly supplies in as fast as possible. There are a reported 600 Swedish citizens missing. The King of Thailand lost a grandson to this disaster.

I Just sent a cash contribution to the American Red Cross earmarked for International Relief. It won't help the folks in SEA but I'll be going down to our local Carter Blood Center to donate my rare red stuff.

I would urge any of you who can to donate whatever you are able to help.

The American Red Cross has a secure link for Credit Card contributions. Link up here American Red Cross (http://www.redcross.org/) You can also link to stories there that our media is not covering.

I couldn't link to the International Red Cross/Red Crescent to find out where to donate but their main page is International Red Cross/Red Crescent (http://www.icrc.org/eng)

My company has matching contributions for charitable organizations and I intend to hit them up when the plant fires up again after the New Year. If your church or any other social organization seeks help here don't turn a deaf ear. Stay involved and do what you can. It all comes back in time.

I've rambled enough here. Count your blessings and please do what y'all can to help.

The latest report I watched on Fox News at 6:00 am this morning EST said the death toll is now at 44,000 overall, this number will go up.

My heart goes out to all who have been hurt by this.

I have lived through Huricanes in Florida, and massive snow storms, but nothing can compare to this.

Total destruction. :(

Didn't Sumatra get moved 100 feet by all this???

Didn't Sumatra get moved 100 feet by all this???

nah, I don't think so.. First, there was a series of terrestrial quakes at Acheh, Sumatra's Northernmost province. Its land's end is purtty close to one of our island State, Penang and further up North, Thailand's Phuket.. Then, there was this 9.0 biggie deep in the Andaman Sea which sent waves all the way up to Somalia, destroying literally anything along its path. Today, as I am speaking, dead bodies are still being washed ashore from this horrific disaster. None of them folks in Malaysia have experienced tidal waves as high as coconut trees.. Our death toll is at 60 and counting.. :(

That's what the experts were saying on the news, it moved 100 feet to the southwest...

the death toll may rise to 70,000. :(

WOW!!! This is totally mind boogling!!!!!! :(

This whole thing Is probably pushing human minds (both in the local diasaster area and the world) to that wierd region of the mind where reality ends and "meltdown " begins

Well Big-T ~ It hit them when they have least expected. Them poor countries such as Indonesia, Sri Lanka, India and the isles on the Andaman Sea have no early warning system.. :( Scores of fishermen who set out to sea did not return on that day.. As for Sumatra being moved a hundred feet, some geological research would have nailed in that fact..

And ironically, our "early warning systems' for tsunamis, for reliablity is at best, questionable

And ironically, our "early warning systems' for tsunamis, for reliablity is at best, questionable

Our systems are much more reliable since the 1964 quake that hit Prince William Sound, Alaska. A full 90% of the deaths from this quake were from the resulting tsunami. The largest wave height for this tsunami was reported at Shoup Bay, Valdez Inlet (67 meters). The wave that struck Crescent City was only 2.8 meters high but was suffiecient in duration to cause major property damage and loss of life far from the quakes Alaskan epicenter. As a result, the West Coast & Alaska Tsunami Warning Center was established at Palmer, Alaska. Together with the Tsunami center in Hawaii, they provide an effective warning system.

NOAA relayed information about the recent quake to 26 countries in Asia. Few of them have adequate alert/warning networks and the people are not familar with tsunamis. India, from what I have read, did not have a good point of contact and apparently did not receive the warning. The stories of people rushing out to gather fish etc as the tsunami began to recede as it shoaled are remeniscient of the exact same thing that happened in the 1946 tsunami that struck Hawaii.

Consider though that the eruption of Krakatoa in the Sunda Strait off Java created a similar tsunami that claimed 36,000 plus lives in the 1800s and you would have to wonder why a system was not in place to warn people. If you consider the bathymetry of the ocean floor in the Bay of Bengal, the Bengal Fan, the earths largest alluvial fan fed by sediment from the Ganges-Brahmaputra-Meghna and Irrawaddy river systems, provides a perfect shoaling base for tsunamis to gain height. The Indian sub-contenent joins the Asian continent at its apex and would serve to focus a tsunami's power. Although the area is not considered part of the Pacific Rim of Fire, it remains active and has seen the world's largest recorded volcanic explosion and now another major seismic event that defies comprehension.

A catastrophe of this magnitude should have been envisioned due to the seismic history. Not just a tsunami warning center needs to be developed, but the individual countries must work to establish warning systems in each country and train their people what to do just as they do in Japan.
