I'm bored, sitting here eating chocolate covered coffee beans... got to thinking... is there a lethal limit? Enter Google.

Toxic dose
The LD_50 of caffeine (that is the lethal dosage reported to kill 50% of the population) is estimated at 10 grams for oral administration. As it is usually the case, lethal dosage varies from individual to individual according to weight. Ingestion of 150mg/kg of caffeine seems to be the LD_50 for all people. That is, people weighting 50 kilos have an LD_50 of approx. 7.5 grams, people weighting 80 kilos have an LD_50 of about 12 grams.
In cups of coffee the LD_50 varies from 50 to 200 cups of coffee or about 50 vivarins (200mg each).
One exceptional case documents survival after ingesting 24 grams. The minimum lethal dose ever reported was 3.2 grams intravenously, this does not represent the oral MLD (minimum lethal dose).
In small children ingestion of 35 mg/kg can lead to moderate toxicity. The amount of caffeine in an average cup of coffee is 50 - 200 mg. Infants metabolize caffeine very slowly.
So I guess an IV of coffee is out of the question.

vampyrewolf,
Don't forget that the chocolate will add some caffeine to that in the coffee beans :)
I must admit I've never thought of how much caffeine would constitute a lethal dose. My caffeine intake is fairly low these days, but in the past I drank enough Mello Yello and Jolt cola to fill a medium-sized swimming pool on a regular basis.
While I wouldn't drink a cup of coffee, I really like the chocolate covered beans. I rarely get them, and don't have any on hand, so of course I'm craving them now...

:D What a way to go! :D
Ken ;)
My friends chew coffee beans to stay awake during college exams after a night of "cramming". I never tried it so I don't know what that is like? I am an insomniac and don't need any caffeine to keep me awake. I do drink a good cup of tea tho. That gets my day started quickly. Cheers!
over the past 3 years my caffeine consumtion has been much larger that my oxigen or H2O consumtion for example :D
coffee kept me awake for weeks at a time.... in 58 days i'll be a free man again :p

I wonder what java has to say to these findings?
BTW vampyre, watch those chocolate flavored beans -
that's a "double whammy"! The sugar intake has to be
as lethal!

now I just drink 15-20 cups in a normal day.
Only picked up $6 worth of beans on friday.... should make it through this week on em.

I seldom drink coffee so I can't tell much about the effects, but considering the amount of chocolate I eat sometimes, I think I have developed sort of imunity ;) Strangely, but coffee makes me sleepy
VW, you said 80 cups in 8 hrs? I think I'd be dead in less than a week after such a regime. :o

I find a cup of coffee is enhanced by this wild mint I find growing in my basement. (great for the appetite too)

I cut down my coffee at BK when my resting heart rate was somewhere around 200bmp. :D
chinook: I'll eat a pound of these chocolate covered beans... then baggie my feces up for you.... you can sift through it and it'll cost you a knife.... :p You asked...

OK VW if you're willing and anal... I mean able.
Butt in order to maximize our profit maybe you could ingest say 5 lbs and some sort of accellerant so we could speed up the throughput. As for a knife, I suppose a butterknife of some sort would be appropiate.
And just so we don't get into trouble with the medical authorities over hygiene, maybe you could look into the proper cleansing of food prep utensils here... http://blessedherbs.com/?af=0010&sp=colon_cleansing_kit
Looking forward to the first crap...oops... crop of VW beans. :p

P.S.
...and don't try passing off the chocolate covered ones straight from the store as I'll be testing each and every one.
(Can't think how right now, butt I'll come up with something)
i once saw something on tv about extremely very rare coffee "Kopi Luwak "(civet koffie)that are made of beans that have been eaten and defecated by the civet cat. They say the taste is unbelievable. I know that a Brussels coffeehouse paid a lot of $ for a little sack. Has anyone tasted it yet?
:)
I bought some of these for a friend at christmas. AFAIK he hasn't tried them yet but I hope they're good, cost the equivalent of $30 for 57g.
