View Full Version : Banned From Ebay!

Hello all!

I would like everyone here to bare witness to the fact that I am officially banned from looking at :spyder: on eBay for three months:eek:

This has not been an easy decision but this self imposed ban is nevertheless very necessary. I thought I had my addiction under control but almost every time I turn on my PC I find another beautiful :spyder: . I suspect a conspiracy, just when I feel that my collection is as good as it can get, another variation I don't own comes up for sale  I blame the sellers.....you know who you are!

I tell myself "just say no" but my mouse hand has a will of its own and before I know what has happened the "buy it now" button has been pressed :( and another knife is on its way. This in itself isn't the problem. It is when I have to press the "pay now" button my troubles begin. Just as well I can't afford any presents for the wife and kids this year because I'm thinking of selling them!

So a message to all the vendors out there, do your worst, I will not be watching! Honestly ;)

I understand your pain.

I regret to inform you that there is currently no cure for this dread condition. The only relief would be death, and that would mean you would miss next years' models. :D

What was the quote from the Red Green Show? "I'm pulling for you; we're all in this together."

Yeah I hear that cliche when you are trying rid yourself of an addiction that is one of the terms they use. However a Spyderco addiction is much more complex than that. This kind of an addiction reaches into the very tentacles of your psyche and through the smallest crevices of your soul. It surpasses smoking, drinking and some of the other most brutal addictions. The problem with this disorder (blessing) is that ownership of :spyder: 's are very justifiable. There is always that excuse that " I just got to have that one to complete my set". Or " I have that one in S30V but I don't have it in 440V". No matter what rationale you use to bolster your ( lost) willpower it all becomes very futile in an endless desire to have the one you just don't have, but have had it on your want list ( gotta have list) for such a long time. Hannibal has pointed out with great accuracy that it is a life long addiction ( being totally consumed). Also support groups are a waste of time; all they do is generate more covetousness & envy. Just think about what the Great :spyder: Factory has said all along: " Just Think About It; All GOD's Critter's Have Knives". We are no exception; we just happen to be worse. :D :spyder: :D

Well Ken,
If your ban from Ebay means you won't be listing any spydies for sale then maybe I'll save some money too! :p ( Love the blue Spyderhawk by the way ).

Anyway - I admire your good intentions but I'm willing to bet you don't last 3 days, never mind 3 months. Those :spyder: s are damn addictive aren't they?? As for me, at least I've got the chance to work a fair bit of overtime just now. Just as well............................ ;)

None! I'll explain......As you are aware, I placed an order with Edgar Bros. about six weeks ago for four knives, one each for you and Timlara, one for my collection and a user. Then when JFJ advertised that he had some I placed an order for four with him as they were numbered.

At this time I was under the impression that only enough design team knives were being produced in order to provide a knife each to members of the design team. I was not included in this group. Though getting hold of a design team knife to add to my collection would have been great.

Some time later, JFJ contacted me to let me know that he was unable to supply any of the four I had ordered. That left Edgar Bros who haven't even bothered to reply to me! When I went back to British Blades, which to be honest I don't do as often as I used to these days, it looks as though more design team knives were made than were needed! Orders had been placed with Olive and the replies sent out. So I missed out there too :(

The knives will be available soon from UK outlets. I will be buying mine from Bruce at Heinnie Haynes.

They are just the ones that you know about! ;)

:spyder: bought privately: Manix, SS ATR, SS Dragonfly, Assist, Green and Pink Jester, Catcherman, Orange Rescue, Spyder engraved Native and Delica, SS Endura II....etc......etc. :p :D :p :D :p :D

Nothing else for it.....my wife is going to have to work harder in the New Year

Happily, there are only the two models that our friend has that I would like to add to the collection, then it's just a case of keeping up to date.

By the way, the Dino bone Cricket didn't reach its reserve. :(

hi ken
sorry to hear your dilemma and i know what you're going through. as a confessed :spyder: addict myself, i had to go cold turkey 1 year ago. 2 weeks ago i could have said with pride that my name is david, i love collecting :spyder: s but it has been 1 year since my last purchase. but i could not resist the penknife (2 engraved - for the collection ;) ;) and 3 normals - 1 EDC for me  , 1 EDC for my wife  and 1 as a spare :D -on the way).

lack of funds makes it easier to stick to your resolution.

maybe in the 3 months you can make a list of all the :spyder: s you own and post it here for us to drool over. there are a lot of people would assist your bank balance if you needed to thin out your collection ( :) ), myself included.

take care
david

You Danes are indeed a brave bunch! There is nothing little about my lady other that her height, which is unfortunately only matched by her width! :(

Her tongue is sharper than any one of my Spydies; trust me when I say that it is deployed faster and far more frequently. Having said that, she is at this time more relaxed than usual as she is filled with festive spirit......mulled wine......gin and tonic......lager beer! Lets not pull any punches......she's as relaxed as a newt :o

So the question is ....how much? How long would you be prepared to keep her.......and finally can I pay you using PayPal?

If you send her here with beermoney enough for a thirsty Dane and her, IŽll have her trained and tuned (even trimed... ;) ) in a couple of months.
IŽll even let you have one of my "stranded" Swedish Cheerleaders (Not Ingrid but one of the other 8) to keep you company. After 2 years of tight, firm busty blondes and redheads that only go; "What ever you like..." I could use a bit of company while drinking my Single Malt and Sprite......
OBTW, IŽll ofcourse need the useual 1200 Sterling for B&B.

A couple of months.....you are my hero! :D Ł1200, cheap at twice the price!

Only one problem, I am unable to lay my hands on the additional Ł3800 to cover her beer bill!

At this time of year the last thing I need is a busty blonde or red head that is not prepared to part with her money......have they not read "A Christmas Carol?" Oh, I see, this is a language thing....."tight"......they are all alcoholics! You have my sympathy, I know what you are going through!

As for the training, tuning and trimming......I fear that your efforts would be wasted. It is all too little, too late! Its wonderful having some company whilst having a drink, but Sprite alone isn't too nice, and with her about, that's all that would be left! ;)

I'm worried! This is another thread I started that has ended up completely detached from the original post! :(

Seems java got a problem with me lending you one of the girls. you see, he gets them one weekend a month and on every second holiday. Seems he thinks X-Mas is Java time for the Sweedes...... Sorry! However, you can have my wife. her tounge is soooooooo sharp you wonŽt be needing any Spydies -and she doesnŽt drink at all!!!!!!! :( And your right about the "tight-thing" they (the cheerleaders) do drink alot of snaps.

ken -- did you REALLY buy ALL those knives... in one single month?!

the one nice thing about spydie collecting, as opposed to other addictions, is that the knives will at least hold their value... if you ever decide you have too many spydies, or need to raise some cash, you can always send some knives back to the bay! with drinking or smoking -- you're never going to see any of that money again!

several months ago, i noticed that my spydie spending was getting a tad irresponsible... i decided that i was too poor to own any knives that i wasn't going to carry and use, so i sold a few rare spydies. made a nice profit... enough to cover the cost of the spydies i kept!

good luck fighting the spyder disease, ken! it'll be a tough battle, i'm sure...

i'm still trying to figure out how i've managed to buy new spydies while being unemployed (without collecting any unemployment) the last 4 months...

Good move Ken!

That is why I am down to 3 Spyderco's and about 5 Swiss Army Knives.

I have a wife and little girl and I cannot have $1,000 + tied up in knives. It's just insane.

Some people here have so many knives that they could sell them and probably pay for half of a brand new car.

If people are wealthy and can afford to have a huge collection that's great. However I know we've all joked before about eating Ramen so we can have more knives.

I bet there are people here who don't have a 401k or anything in a savings account and live paycheck to paycheck yet have TONS of knives. I had to put a stop to that before it got out of hand with me. :)

David

I gave up smoking some time ago and I drink alcohol very rarely. My other pursuits cost very little, camping, walking, shooting (air rifle) and riding my Bandit 1200 when the British weather and time permit. So the "slush fund" I built up through not smoking (I was on 40 a day) and buying and selling knives went straight back into building my Spyderco collection.

I have 273 :spyder: knives in my collection. About 200 SAK's and 100 other knives (it used to be a lot more but they are being sold off to buy more :spyder: ) mainly folders including SOG, Gerber, Puma, Remington, Berretta, Leatherman, Case, Buck, Kershaw, Cold Steel and Boker.

Though I had carried and used :spyder: knives for years I didn't actually start collecting them until 2001. At that time I decided, having watched the market for some time that earlier models were going to get harder to find. This being the case I felt that I should try to buy them when they became available.

The internet made buying an awful lot easier for me. Before the WWW opened up the market collectors in the UK had to pay excessively for knives from UK suppliers. When I found that I could buy knives from the USA (even factoring in the occasional knife with customs charges) for 50% less than in the UK my collecting really took off. I concentrated on the earlier knives like Workers and Hunters and then moved on to others that I particularly like the looks of. I soon found myself trying to find one of every SKU.

Though I feel I have bought pretty well over the years I will be the first to admit that I have paid a little more than I should have done for two or three knives when my "need" to add them to my collection has taken me over
Now there are only two or three knives I would like to add to my collection, so my expenditure has dropped dramatically. All of the knives have increased in value, some now selling for three or four times the amount I paid for them  so in that respect, though not bought for that purpose, I am happy with my "investment".

I have not yet mentioned the friendships that have developed as a result of me collecting knives and visiting this forum. I have dozens of friends here and a handful of special mates :D without whose help and advice I would have been unable to develop my knowledge or collection as effectively. Thank you all!

Cheers, Ken
