How about some DLC VG10? Has it been done? Discovered VG10 in the last month and love it.

Nope, rust comes right through the DLC. It's a hotly debated topic, but the pictures don't lie.

I was going to say the Street Bowie, but that is black ceramic, not DLC. But is a black coated VG-10 blade, so it gets half credit. Black so the for real tactical people can use it as I understand.

I would like to see some DLC Maxamet. Preferably, on a Military or PM2.

I didn't vote. I can go either way. I lean toward uncoated blades because I can see rust and remove it with a wire brush in my dremel or with a scotch brite or something and the blade won't look like a train wreck afterwards. And if the knife sees heavy use, scratches on plain metal don't show up like a run in a black stocking. But I have warmed up to DLC on the few knives I have with it. Although mine have not seen heavy use, they are looking good and from all I read, DLC is tough stuff. So I make my choice on a case by case basis -- but I am not pining for more DLC coated blades.

To me DLC is makeup it is not tuff it is pretty. It scratches and scuffs far to easy and is a disappointment. A little use very little and it is scuffed and ugly. Now if yer collecting Safe Queens or are special Operations with a true blade muted requirement I beg yer pardon.

That's too bad. I guess I've had good good luck with it working 12 hours per day on a dredge in saltwater. (DLC M4)

I have a feeling you'll see more pictures of corrosion breaking through the DLC than people saying "hey look guys, DLC actually does help!"

I have never seen corrosion breaking through DLC and always considered it 3 ways.

1.Blade muting for special ops and yes I do work with actual Seals and all their personal knives are blackened.

2. Corrosion resistance for steels prone to corrosion.

3. Safe Queens AKA collectibles.

My big disappointment came with DLC in a partly Serrated Military one slip while sharpening and uh oh right to steel. Not cool. Earlier I had worked with a circa 2008 Autonomy and the DLC was much tougher. Later I discovered it was a different coating / process since then have been looking into ferric Acid washes for blade muting and beauty.

Not all coatings are the same. DLC resists scratching better than TiNi and ceramic coatings, or the black oxide finish that's more common, etc.

I would like to make a slight correction. I said that DLC doesn't aid in corrosion resistance, when I should have said it does not prevent it.

It very well may slow corrosion down, but it does not prevent it. I have never experienced corrosion through DLC as I do not like black blades on my knives. My carbon steels, after learning how to maintain them, need only my assistance not to rust. That's the key, maintenance.

DLC for 90% of people is all about aesthetics. That's fine, just admit it

I base my position on photographs of rusted DLC Spydercos and the fact that even Spyderco will not say that it helps with corrosion.

Also, 2 more things.
M4 doesn't count. I have yet to have any corrosion of any kind happen on my Mantra and it gets regular usage and I have only cleaned it once when it was new. I just wipe it off.

How many of you in the pro DLC camp clean and oil your blades like you would an uncoated blade?

I will take M4 any way I can get it coated or uncoated

I voted yes, but please just give me more K390 coated or not :)

Can steel blades put on a Para 3 even rust? Some say no, but I'm with you fellers.

M4 doesn't count? Lol, where do you live? I live on a barrier island completely surrounded by saltwater and work on east coast beaches as well as dredges in harbors/channels. I spent the last 5 months in the mouth of St John's river in Mayport, FL by Jacksonville. Aside from SurfinGringo I probably expose knives to more saltwater than anyone here. I do maintain blades by cleaning and oiling them, but you don't always have the opportunity to stop and maintain a knife in the middle of a work shift. M4 without DLC would be an absolute rust bucket in a week or 2, in need of disassembly and a full cleaning (rust removal) and thorough lubrication. I realize most people are just thinking about whether or not they want a black blade. I actually do not prefer black blades, I want the DLC for a practical reason.

Not good enough for people who live on the coast. Even cruwear will rust on the very first day of use unless you are actually willing to keep oil in your pocket all day and keep the knife saturated in lubricant. DLC Cruwear would be a different story.

What was used in the older autonomy from circa 2008 that stuff is very tough

Yes they can. I had S30V rust and pit all in one 10 hour day of hard sweaty work in the Florida sun I was drenched in sweat which is common in the summer during any kind of out door work as I was moving out of my house for a pending divorce and also batoning up said House for an incoming hurricane.

Lol Fun times! NOT!!!

Towards late afternoon I needed to cut a rope and looked and saw to my astonishment not only rust but black pits had formed.

I was disappointed all the other SH$@ we poop going on and now old faithful too.

Later the tip broke while slicing cardboard without contact with and object other than cardboard after that it was the end of S30V with me.
